On Saturday, the Blue Moose Cafe, in collaboration with The West Virginia Blues Society, will host the stage for blues acts Ms. Freddye and Blues Faze as well as local performer Sam Lamont.
The Memphis or Bust Fundraiser will assist sending the Appalachian Blues Challenge winners to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn. beginning Feb. 4.
Blues and R&B fans may take to Ms. Freddye and Blues Faze quickly; their sultry vocals, walking bass lines and solid guitar work take a largely traditional rendition of the blues that is rare in Morgantown.
One of the act’s songs, “Just Won’t Burn,” a lazy, 6/8 time blues tune, contains some features that lie outside of the familiar 12-bar style blues, including an unexpected chorus and a harmonica solo.
Guitarist Jason Caliguri also takes a solo on the track, allowing bassist Keith Gamble and John Erskine to lay the track’s ground work.
Caliguri’s solos pay homage to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, playing with exciting rhythmic gestures and a slightly overdriven guitar tone.
