Proposition 8 has made gay rights a front page story, but how can you make an impact if you live in the Midwest? Missouri and Kansas have already passed measures to prevent same-sex marriages, so what can you do?
1. Be visable. Consider that MO and KS amendments passed by a large percentage of the vote, which means that all of us know people who voted against our rights. Let those close to you know that you are affected. Stand up for yourself, no one else will.
2. Be prepared and informed. The right approach and tactful comment will go a long way toward fighting this fight. Refuse to discuss this as a religious issue, this is a civil rights issue. We are a minority group and we are seeking equal rights, not special rights. Democracy in the US is all about protecting minorities from the tyranny of majority. Surely we all remember the preamble to the Declaration of Independence . . .
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
3. Support the Community. The LGBT Community has many wonderful and important organizations that need your time, almost as much as your money. Benefits and fundraising events are fabulous ways to support organizations and have fun. Or turn your next party into a benefit for an organization. Throw an Oscar Party and ask your guests to buy a ticket, then donate the proceeds to an LGBT non-profit. Having a Christmas or New Year's Eve party? Then ask your guests to bring a gift or food donation for SAVE, INC, Hope House just to name a few.
4. Gay Money. The economy is in the tank, so our money may be more powerful now than ever. Seek out gay and gay-friendly businesses to support. If you're not sure whether the business is gay or gay-friendly ask them. If they're not, then let them know how much money you spend there and let them know that those dollars will now be spent elsewhere. I remember back in the 80's the bookstore in Westport sold a stamp that said, Gay Money. Think about the power in that, maybe it needs to make a comeback?
