Current mood: rebellious Category: Web, HTML, Tech
Is it just me, or have all these social networking sites taken the route of expecting you to post up-to-the-second updates on your status and mood? Are we really this self-absorbed now? Do we really think everyone wants to know, or for that matter should know, every little detail of our everyday lives? Hmm, I just ate a peanut butter sandwich with marmalade on it! I think I'll post a status update about that. Hey, someone just called my cell phone but they had the wrong number. My friends so totally need to know that happened! Dang, the elastic on my underwear broke. I'd better get on my iPhone and tell all my Facebook friends about that.
What bothers me most is that this aspect of social networking sites breeds a culture of thoughtlessness. People can say the first thing that comes to mind as soon as it comes to mind, which means that people don't have to think before they speak, or type in this case. This applies to people's tweets and status updates and to the comments their "friends" or "followers" post in response. Think about it: how many times has someone in your "network" said something regrettable either in a status update or a comment? How many times have YOU done the same? And how many ugly situations could have been avoided if only you or someone else or both had just taken a moment to THINK first?
