I've just heard that the Grand Old Petroleum party has doctored the stimulus bill to encourage dead-end bulls**t energy technologies like nuclear and coal, instead of the renewable energy we were promised. NUCLEAR AND COAL!?!

First, let me torpedo coal once and for all: even if we magically sequester all the carbon from coal-burning plants, coal still kills people, whether it's miners trapped in cave-ins, or folks getting poisoned by the acids and heavy metals that run off downstream from strip mines.

COAL KILLS... EVEN WHEN YOU BURN IT CLEANLY AND SEQUESTER THE CARBON.

Miners' lives matter. And the poor folks whose lives are ruined by living near strip mines, their lives matter, too.

Don't take my word for it. Even the most casual research will show you how the working poor take it in the shins from the coal industry.

As for nuclear, I'll keep it short: nobody has successfully addressed the problem of nuclear waste, which remains lethally radioactive for thousands of years. Security is a problem, too: remember Chernobyl? Thousands of people killed or sickened? Europe is still cleaning up from that one, and that was an accident. An intentional act of sabotage could create a disaster as bad or worse. Do some research on the level of security at U.S. nuclear plants and you may have a hard time falling asleep for a while.

I know I'm crazy to expect long-range vision and moral sanity from our leaders, but I am just gobsmacked that ANYBODY in a position of power is still thinking of short-term gain at the expense of Earth when rational people OF BOTH PARTIES know  better.

Conservatives and liberals both need to breathe the same air, to eat food that isn't contaminated, to drink water that's free from carcinogens.

Let's all send the message: Say no to corporate whoredom. The Earth depends on this message getting through.
