So obviously things are not the same on Wednesday nights. Here's a quick summary of what's happened so far: On December 28th, the Airliner was paid a visit by the L.A. Fire Marshall. As it turned out, the main stage was never properly zoned for occupancy, so it was immediately shut down. In the same stroke, the Fire Marshall limited the capacity of the venue to 140 people maximum.

Since then, we've been operating upstairs-only, hoping and praying for a return of normalcy. For the record, the scaling back of the booking schedule was a conscious decision. After doing high-profile shows like Daedelus (Jan. 16th) and the Violence Recordings night (Jan. 9th) with the limited capacity -- where we had to turn away hundreds of people -- we just felt bad for our folks waiting in line for nothing. It was after the Daedelus night, in particular, where we told ourselves: "OK, let's scale back the bookings so that everyone who wants to get it can get in."

Also know that we were initially told that the situation would be resolved in a few weeks. At this point, we're going on two-and-a-half months, and honestly, things aren't looking to change any time soon.

We will do our best to keep you informed about what's next for Low End Theory. The reason we haven't switched venues is because we love the Airliner and it's staff, and feel that Low End Theory's success in Los Angeles is inextricably linked to the Airliner. So please, bear with us, and know that we're not disappearing.

Now, after a recent conference call with all of the residents, we've decided to step up the booking schedule, and book big shows regardless of the capacity. Take a look at our April schedule and you'll see that we are not playing around: from the GLK release party to The Grouch to the next Unreleased Beat Invitational, we're getting back to our normal steez. Plus, there's some killer stuff coming in May and June that is so absurdly amazing that we can't speak on it just yet.

In the meantime, please respond to this blog with your suggestions. We'd love to hear you think, and what you'd do if you were in our shoes.

Sincerely,
Low End Theory

If you folks are that dead-set on sticking with The Airliner, which is a great venue -- Fire Marshall be damned -- then I say stay with it. I know next to nothing of zoning regulations, but I do know that this city needs a club like Low End Theory around.

I wish you all at LET the best in sorting out this mess.

This situation has always confused me in terms of the downstairs space. Aside from using the upstairs - does Low end still consider utilizing the outside space and isolating the stage zone without depriving people the chance to at least use the downstairs patio? I havent been for awhile but i remember when this happened before and it was completely a "ur not allowed to enter period" zone. Security would have to assume position with maybe some rope and a curtain - and those burly muscles of course, all around the stage. But people would get a chance to be more mobile instead of having to all squeeze upstairs to puff a smoke. since i havent been for awhile its not fair to say i know what im talking about entirely, but maybe things havent changed - maybe they have. i love you guys nevertheless, do your thing!

see you soon.
all the congrats on NY!

No more low end theory membership card just make it $5 all day I know that has nothing to do with zoning issues but I liked when it was $5 all the time

man, i'd be down to help you with whatever you need to get that outdoor warehouse stage going. the low end theory is no doubt the best spot in la for music. always amazing dj's, producers, and live musicians. its one of the only spots in la where its about the music, and the lack of pretentious fucks is one of my favorite parts.

I haven't even been to Low End since the back was closed.
That's not really the reason I haven't been, but the idea of cramming even half those people into the upstairs area definitely weighted my decision.

My honest opinion: The Airliner either makes all the necessary changes to get that back stage area in working order very soon (no matter the costs) or else you find a new venue. If everyone that can make these changes thinks about it, I'm sure they realize they will make their money back over time with the increase in allowable capacity. Also, other club promoters will consider it a profitable space when they can have that size of venue.

Anyway, my two cents.
I've been going to Low End Theory since almost the beginning, and think it must keep going, considering the amount of talent and forward-thinking music showcased there, every week.

Easy in theory; Find a bigger venue for the larger shows and keep the Airliner for smaller/midsized events. Local showcases, maybe even an afterhours party after a bigger event. What we've done in the past is find new/different venues (sometimes illegal parties) where we could have our needs met. Seattle is a different beast than L.A........ah well.

Hope to see more killer parties reguardless.

IT IS REALLY DOPE TO HAVE THE OUTDOOR STAGE BECAUSE YOU CAN GO AROUND N MINGLE UPSTAIRS N SHIT WHENEVER RATHER THAN BEING TRAPPED IN ONE AREA.. THOUGH ITS STILL HAS 2 STORYS, ITS WAY PACKED.. IVE HAD SOME OF THE MOST FUN NIGHTS OF MY LIFE WITH THE OUTDOOR STAGE.. BUT WHAT GOES DOWN GOES DOWN.. IM HOPEING AS WELL FOR THE OUTSIDE TO BE BACK.. I JUST GOTTA BE SURE TO GET THERE EARLY, SO IT WONT FILL UP..

Alright, having read the comments below, and there were a lot of good ideas, i have this to say/suggest:

1.)Keep those awesome membership cards no matter what that guy has to say. I've been coming to Lowend since its birth and those cards are fucking status. I feel important having one, fuck, i keep the thing visible in the transparent outside of my wallet cause that shit is so dope. New heads can pay $10, and if they're well informed (like people should be), then they should opt to pick up a membership card when they pay the door fee. Duh. Then your homies can get in.

2.) I totally like what was said about having the big shows at another venue. The echoplex has an ehh sound set-up compared to the woof-fest at lowend, but it can hold the masses and put money in your pocket. Plus youre cool with the echoplex and they have an outside somking area for hipsters. :) and a bar for lurkers. The Airliner is the absolute shit, and i would never not want to see you dudes blowing minds there. I dont know how that place is managed, or how much you pull in cash so that youre a priority, but simply put, that back area needs to get fixed (and the TV's inside, what up with dat?). It cant be that expensive. Insulation? More wood? Some aluminum siding? Thats a trip to home depot. Maybe. Gotta stay Airliner-centric.

3.) Where all the talent at? Remember when Flying Lotus would fuck shit up and you'd go home silent cause your ass had just been blown out? What about Thav, everyone knows i love him, but bring him on. His music is THE FUTURE. Gino. Prefuse. More Alfred, of course. Fly DOOM's ass out here! Wasn't he supposed to come anyways? Lately its been ??? and the ???'s. Not to say these people arent talented as hell, just i remember a sweeter time when you'd sign onto the retard Myspace and see the lowend line-up updates every week and it was like "ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!" I miss that.

Thats pretty much what i have to say. What the other guys said. I love Lowend Theory. I have been a member since the beginning and i feel a definite connection to the artists while I'm there. Where else can you go and meet and smoke out with the dudes you bump in your car all day? NO WHERE. No where in the fucking world but Lowend. Something has got to be done. I understand the difficulties when dealing with fire marshals and the law, thats a pain, but something CAN be done, and if i know you dudes, you will GET IT DONE. I have full trust and faith that this shit will be resolved. Kev is a smart cat.

Word Sandwich,

-M. Gartsman

Suggestion: If you book a bigger show, you could try moving it to a different spot just for that time. When you have just residents you can keep it at the Airliner.

Being a member of the Low End Family, I have to say it has been a bitch dealing with all the changes. The venue (was three rooms now two), the people (some of you were happy it was $5, now some of the same folkers bitch that it is $10? come on get a fucking clue, you cant do shit in LA worth what Low End gives you for less than $25, the ones who don't bitch are cool people and WE LOVE YOU!!!), the city (says they're protecting the people, when really lining their own pockets and keeping honest folk like us from providing the people a real service). But all in all it has all been worth it. Low End Theory is something different. So people hang in there. Even if we did move somewhere else (like we did 2 times, remember) it just won't be the same. Be glad you have something different to call your own. And it is yours LA!!!! No better place to party for your rights. Bring your ID, your best friends, some beer money, and a great attitude, and a quest for the best entertainment in the whole fucking city!!!! Peace and Respect, J.Swift checkin' your ID and it better be valid! One Love!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what is the big hype on the airliner?
i can name a dozen other clubs with 3 times that capacity that would love to pack there club on a wed. night...
outdoor stage is kind of slim for what it is and the indoor stage is like the alterknit room at knitting factory smallness.
i feel like its the cheap price the airliner has that keeps low end booking there. Is that the reason you couldnt stay at the echoplex? echoplex was huge, classy and major sound already there.......

if you have a large lineup or want to put together a real special night then book it for a larger bigger club, oh wait didnt you do this with the mars volta? hmmmmmmm

bottom line is low end shouldnt be responsible nor have to deal with all this zoning issue crap it should be in the hands of the the owner of the airliner, and if they cant handle there business then why should we be giving them business. do one to others as blah blah blahhh

I consider myself one of Low Low's residents even though I don't play music... a lot of our members feel the same way. we are here to stay, and look forward to the near feature and the new more 'intimate' atmosphere.... through thick and thin.

over and out!

that sucks about whats happening about the airliner...... and till this day i have not gone back since the zoning issues for the back room. i personally think that the low end will not be the same without that back room open. ive seen countless people rip shit up there and the upstairs room will never be the equivalent of it. ive also been to the echoplex and thought the venue was half assed, horrible sound, ect. i do agree with the low end that the airliner should be the low end's place in los angeles, i wouldnt have it any other way. im eagerly waiting the rebirth of this mecca we call the airliner. and anyone complaining about the price...... go fuck yourself..... go pay 25 or 30 somewhere else on a wed. nite and waste your money. low end is the only place i know where i can see the headliner and smoke a blunt with them too...... no amount of money will ever match to that.... and u definately wont find that in hollywood! keep up the good work....ill be waiting the return of the " free mason salad toss contest" posted on the airliner one night when i went to see free the robots and prefuse 73. ahhahahahaha

HMMM...WELL TO GIVE SOME ADVICE, I THINK LOW END THEORY CLUB HAS A FEW SOLUTIONS/OPTIONS TO GO WITH: DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THE DAMN FIRE MARSHALL OFF LOW ENDS' NUTS BECAUSE IN ALL HONESTY DA AIRLINER IS A DEFINITE COOL ASS CLUB. I DUNNO IF ITS BECAUSE OF NOT ENOUGH FIRE EXITS AND IF IT IS MAKE ANOTHER ONE...IF ITS POSSIBLE DO WHAT IT TAKES BECAUSE THE AIRLINER IS WHERE LOW END PLANTED ITS ROOTS. ANOTHER OPTION(SOMEONE MENTIONED IT BELOW)IS TO USE AIRLINER FOR THE SMALL/LO-CAL NITES AND USE ANOTHER CLUB FOR THE NITES WITH DA MASS LOVE; ANOTHER OPTION JUST CHANGE CLUBS...BUT WHATEVER ADVICE LOW END TAKES I HOPE IT WORKS OUT TO THE LIKING OF LOW END FAITHFUL AND THE RESIDENTS+UPCOMING ARTISTS...:KEEP DA SOUL MUSIC STREAMN'...PEACE.LOVE.UNITY.

The outside is essential, it's what sets it apart from other lame ass venues that look the same! just like the others whom got to enjoy the outside of the airliner with the Low end Theory, we'll just hope it re-opens!
