From wherever we sit, we can sometimes forget what makes a person tick. It is very easy to walk in our own shoes, but how about anothers'? When I used to hear people like Oprah say "I don't believe in luck", I didn't quite grasp what the wisdom in the words she was saying, and I'm not quite her biggest fan, but I finally see where she was coming from. The decisions people make that we either understand or don't can come from a variety of circumstances. I remember very vividly my high school music teacher and student getting into a HEATED argument over something I didn't quite understand back then over a choice an icon of the student made to join the "Tonight Show Band", then hosted by Johnny Carson, with the Doc Severenson band. The student was pissed because he thought the icon was "above" that job. The Teacher (John Magruder, RIP) was inscensed that the student failed to see that maybe the icon NEEDED the job. All the accolades and praise the icon may have had in the past probably wasn't paying his bills. Or child support. Or who knows what? And maybe he wasn't "lucky" like some to have a sugar mama or the wherewithall to have made wise investments earlier in his career. Who knows.... But we are all prone to such things, no matter what occupation we have. The colleges we choose, the friends we have, the jobs we take are all affected by where we are coming from. And yes, money breeds money, but more importantly, the OPPORTUNITY to make money. Decisions made under the duress of HAVING to earn a living can be unwise, and people tend to forget that. Not everybody has a plan B when life deals a setback and you may need to borrow money or crash at the folks' place 'till you correct your course. Some people just have to "keep on truckin'" come hell or highwater. And in the meantime may miss out on the "luck" of being in the right place at the right time for what it is they really want to attain. Some people "have" and some people do "not". Have chances. Have opportunities they can "take" (on spec does NOT pay the rent, but the ability to embark on a risky venture can be cushioned by pre existing money/safety net). So those who do not "have" tend to play it safe...But "safe" is boring. And sometimes gets outdated. Then what? We should realize that opportunities and luck are all created by circumstance. Some circumstances we just simply don't control. Some we can overcome. Some we cannot. But whatever the case, put your best foot forward and realize you might be one of the lucky ones. But don't disparage our brothers and sisters who may actually want what you have but simply had absolutley no chance at the "luck" you did. I hope we all use our luck wisely. If we are so "lucky" to see it.
