L'avevano promesso, ci orienteremo sempre più verso il metal. E così è stato. Gli Abel Is Dying dopo un interessante demo trovano finalmente voce attraverso la Still Life, che incurante dei trend odierni pubblica "Gazing from the abyss". Il combo lombardo ama la velocità e il metal più furioso, tanto è vero che nelle sette canzoni di questo EP è davvero difficile non farsi coinvolgere dalla foga assassina trasmessa dal gruppo. Ogni canzone vanta strutture complesse, si passa da parti volutamente pesantissime ad altre ricche di melodia dove i nostri sfogano l'amore viscerale per la scena death scandinava. Tante buone doti omaggiate dall'egregio lavoro svolto al mixaggio – una volta tanto per niente piatto - e l'artwork curatissimo. Consigliato ai fan della scena nordica e a chi ama Darkest Hour et similia! 8

This cool band from Italy deals with "research", better if it was a search of personality. These guys keep on breaking some "rules" of composition (now I see that this is something that almost everyone adopted), the verses/chorus/verses/chorus is non-sense for them, their music flows as long as you hear it, and this is very good and very promising because they've done it on their first album. I find this short album to be a great deal more than other 2006 metalcore albums. They base on lots of riffs, fast tempo changes, a lot of breakdowns that make you go nuts and on usual stylish melodic parts. The only problem, if I can say "problem", is that they sound so familiar to me, sounds like As I Lay Dying and Parkway Drive. First 3 songs - 'Winchester's Nightmare', 'The Constellation Fever' and 'Grave Poem' - are so intense and so thrashy that after them I need something very muddy and very powerful, but instead of that, there is an interlude - 'Marcus Bridge', not so well inspirited, some clean guitar, and only after this acoustic part, the truculent line is continuously traced by 2 more good tracks – 'Buried Like Beatrix' (they're Italians, maybe it's something about Dante J) and 'Eternal Life', the last one only reminds me of As I Lay Dying and their "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes" and "Frail Words Collapse". The product is closed so poetic by an outro, called 'Abyss'.

ABEL IS DYING ist eine verflucht coole und frische Metalcore Combo aus Italien, die mit richtig Biss an die Sache geht und keine Schmerzen kennt. Mit der kleinen Scheibe "GAZING FROM THE ABYSS" hauen uns die 6 Burschen ihr Mini Album an den Latz, das abgeht wie eine Rakete und am Himmel farbenfroh und mit einem lauten Knall explodiert.
Still Life Records beweist mal wieder ein gutes Händchen bei der Auswahl neuen Bands, die unsere Ohren zum Bluten bringen werden. ABEL IS DYING präsentieren auf ihrem Debut über 23 Minuten fetten Metalcore, der keine Wünsche offen lässt. Mit Volldampf und ordentlich PS unter der Haube donnert ein Song nach dem anderen aus der leidenden Stereoanlage. Die Jungs haben ordentlich Hardcore Power und Wut im Bauch. Sie sparen auch nicht an melodischen Death Metal Riffs oder brutalen Breakdowns, die euch die Hosenbeine wegfliegen lassen. Die Milano Gang zeigt, dass man auch 2006 modern klingen kann und das ganz ohne mit Emo-Singalongs um sich zu werfen. Die beiden Shouter und die flinken Finger der beiden Stromgitarren-Heros halten einen immer bei Laune und gefangen. Die melodischen Riffs schlitzen sich förmlich in die Ohren und sorgen für begeisternde Adrenalin Ausbrüche. Zwischen den einzelnen Tracks werden auch mal ruhige Töne und Passagen eingebaut, diese stehen den restlichen Brechern aber nicht im Wege, sondern helfen diesen sich zu entfalten und den Horizont zu erweitern. Es braucht also keiner Angst davor zu haben von cleanen Vocals zu Tode genervt zu werden. Live kann man ohne lange Eingewöhnung sofort zu den Songs abgehen und mit den 6 Mafiosos richtig Spaß haben. "GAZING FROM THE ABYSS" ist eine saubere Sache, die man gerne durch die Anlage jagt.
Wenn euch bei DEAD TO FALL, THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD und DARKEST HOUR das Wasser im Mund zusammenrinnt, dann lauscht mal ABEL IS DYING. Vielleicht fangt ihr dann sogar an zu sabbern.
Für 2007 wird uns dann das erste Full Lenght, eine UK, EU, Japan und Malaysia Tour erwarten. Man kann also gespannt sein und was die Jungs in der Zukunft noch alles auspacken werden

"Un mix di breakdowns brutali, hardcore e death metal melodico": così Still Life Records presenta il nuovo disco dei milanesi Abel Is Dying. Presentazione semplice ed assolutamente adeguata, racchiudente in sè tutta l'essenza di questo prodotto.
"Gazing From The Abyss" è l'abbreviazione di 23 minuti di violenza psicologica ed irrefrenabile, strutture complesse, groove schiacciasassi: una formula schizofonica devastante, un equilibrio meccanico dettato dalla forza di ogni componente, creando le condizioni adatte per le diverse interazioni tra i singoli contributi strumentali e vocali.
Il grintoso doppio assalto gutturale cavalca la furia massacrante sprigionata dalla batteria, mentre le due chitarre disegnano linee melodiche squisitamente scandinave che portano spesso a breakdowns atmosferici e destabilizzanti, quasi ansiosi, contrapposti a segmenti più puramente indirizzati verso il moshcore.
Facile individuare a quali anfitrioni gli Abel Is Dying guardano con più ammirazione: a Dead To Fall e Darkest Hour, i due esempi citati dalla label, possiamo tranquillamente aggiungere Converge, Lamb Of God, Dillinger Escape Plan, As I Lay Dying, Heaven Shall Burn, Evergreen Terrace.
Grazie a questi paragoni quindi appare evidente verso quale target il combo milanese vuol rivolgere le proprie note: le premesse per guadagnarsi credibilità in questo genere ci sono tutte, il primo passo è stato compiuto ed ora il destino sta nelle loro mani. www.groovebox.it

Influenzati dalla nuova scena metal americana e in parte da quella svedese gli Abel Is Dying segnano il loro esordio per Stillife Records con questo mini di sette pezzi per un complessivo di ventitrè minuti di durata. Il lavoro fatto dietro al mixer da Gianluca Amendolara nei 'Cellar Door Studios' è privo di qualsiasi pecca, non c'è un solo momento del cd in cui uno strumento prenda il sopravvento sugli altri. Al contrario ogni componente ha il suo giusto spazio e ben delinea il proprio tassello a comporre 'Gazing From The Abyss'. Avevo avuto modo di ascoltare (ammetto in maniera superficiale) il precedente promo del 2005 e lo trovavo troppo grezzo e ruvido, le voci emergevano poco e spesso risultavano incomprensibili, nulla a che fare con quest'ultimo lavoro dove Paul e Tommy ben si integrano con i riff di chitarra e le sfuriate hardcore di batteria. Il primo pezzo 'Winchester' Nightmare' mette subito in chiaro quali sono i propositi della band: produrre un suono pesante veloce senza un secondo per riprendere il fiato. Nel complesso nulla di innovativo ma sicuramente pollice 'in su'.

Ein Cover und Booklet, die irgendwie klischeedoof und nichtssagend wirken. Ein Name, der zwangsläufig an As I Lay Dying erinnern muss. Ein Albumtitel, der direkt nach klischeebehaftetem Metalcore klingt. Irgendwie keine gute Startvorraussetzung, wenn schon der erste visuelle Eindruck nicht mehr hergibt als eine weitere Metalcore-Abklatsch-Scheibe, was dann auch das erste Hördurchgang zu bestätigen scheint, wobei man der 2004 gegründeten Truppe aus Milano, Bella Italia eigentlich gar nichts vorwerfen kann. Denn im Prinzip machen sie alles richtig, vielleicht einfach ZU richtig. "Gazing From The Abyss" startet von der ersten Sekunde an durch und macht mächtig Druck, Gitarren und Rhytmusfraktion haben sich eine Menge bei Bands wie Darkest Hour, Deadlock und As I Lay Dying abgeguckt, wobei "Gazing From The Abyss" bei allen Referenzen zu diesen Bands dann doch eher im Uptempo-Bereich verbleibt. Geknüppel auf knapp 23 Minuten. Was das große Manko dar stellt, ist eventuell auch der Bonus, den Abel Is Dying für sich verbuchen können. "Gazing From The Abyss" klingt wie ein Potpourris von bereits etablierten Metalcore-Bands, denn alle existierenden Elemente finden sich auf diesen 7 Songs wieder. Leider bleiben Harmonien und Tempiwechsel doch durch und durch irgendwie durchschaubar und vorhersehbar. Auf der anderen Seite weiss man direkt beim ersten Track, was einen erwartet. "Gazing From The Abyss" bietet keine Abwechslung, keine Innovation und mag unter einem gewissen Anspruch langweilig erscheinen. Doch irgendwie machen es Abel Is Dying - wie schon erwähnt - ZU richtig. Und so macht mir die Platte beim vierten und fünften Durchhören überraschenderweise sogar Spass.
Wer also das Rad nicht neu erfunden haben muss, aber solide, wirklich solide, "auf die Fresse"-Metalkost mit ein paar Moshbreaks und dem Fokus auf Melodie haben möchte, wem ein wenig Eintönigkeit nichts ausmacht, der sollte Abel Is Dying mal eine Chance geben. Denn was die Solidität angeht, brauchen sie sich hinter den Größen des Genres nicht verstecken.

ABEL IS DYING sind 6 Typen aus Milano Italien die gerade mal 2 Jahre Musik unter diesem Namen machen und nach einer Promo CD im letzten Jahr nun auf STILL LIFE RECORDS ihr Debüt veröffentlichten. Insgesamt erwarten Euch hier 7 Songs, wobei der letzte Song das Outro darstellt. Die Band selbst orndet sich dem skandinavischen Metal zu, versehen mit Breakdowns und Hardcore Elementen. So kann man das auch stehen lassen, die Gitarrenarbeit - zumindest in einigen Songs - klingt nach bekanntem Schwedenstyle, doch die beiden Protagonisten lassen es dann wieder nach Metalcore klingen. Die Shoutings unterscheiden sich nicht allzusehr, Einer halt etwas tiefer als der Andere. Und so prügelen sich Gitarre, Bass und vorallem die Drums durch die etwa 20 Minuten. Die Produktion kommt recht dick daher, vorallem wenn der Drummer loslegt. Freunde des tanzbaren Breakdowns finden bei ABEL IS DYING genug Möglichkeiten zum Einsatz zu kommen. Etwas ruhiger wird es mit dem Interlude "Marcus Brigde". Ist diese knappe Minute überstanden, gehts aber gewohnt schnell und aggressiv weiter. Vergleichbar sind die Italiener so in etwa mit dem MC Stil von BURY MY SINS oder FALL OF A SEASON, klingen halt nach dem bekannten Mix aus Metal und Hardcore. Bleibt mir nur noch zu sagen: schade das nach 22 Minuten schon wieder Schluß ist. Checkt ruhig mal die MySpace Seite der Band aus, gefällt Euch der Song "Winchesters Nightmare" dort - gefällt Euch das Album auch!

Gli Abel Is Dying giungono così al loro primo mcd, solamente a due anni di distanza da Start. In questo periodo i sei milanesi hanno rodato le loro pesanti sonorità, dividendo i palchi con band del calibro di Born From Pain, Boy Sets Fire, Ramallah, Let It Die, The Chariot, Slowmotion Apocalypse e moltissime altre, fino ad arrivare a firmare un contratto per la oramai famosissima Still Life Records, etichetta - anch'essa milanese - di tutto rispetto nel settore hardcore new school e non
solo.
Sette brani che filano veloci e potenti senza mai stufare l'ascoltatore: gli Abel Is Dying hanno davvero le carte in regola per diventare seriamente grandi e sono sicuro che durante la loro ultima e recente tournée europea (che ha toccato Svizzera, Francia, Belgio, Germania, Olanda e Austria) hanno fatto la loro gran bella figura!
La band sta già preparando il nuovo full length cd, che dovrebbe uscire sempre per la Still Life verso l'estate 2007: occhi aperti quindi.L'ennesima band di cui andare fieri!

Nuova proposta in casa Stillife Records; questa volta si tratta dei milanesi Abel is Dying al loro debutto ufficiale sulla scena alternativa italiana dopo aver autoprodotto l'anno scorso un promo composto da tre pezzi.
Nati recentemente (fine 2004), questi ragazzi si presentano con "Gazing from the abyss", album composto da sette tracce per un totale di circa ventidue minuti di ascolto.
Quello che ci viene proposto sostanzialmente è un mix di hardcore, violenti breakdowns e un metal che possiamo ricondurlo ai dettami dei mostri scandinavi. Tanto doppio pedale, chitarre quasi mai in "accordo aperto" ma dedite ai classici riff metal e alle molteplici sdoppiature di terza accompagnano due voci rigorosamente in scream che si completano vicendevolmente riuscendo a dare spessore ad ogni pezzo proposto.
Un disco potente che colpisce direttamente l'ascoltatore, un disco da far risuonare ai massimi volumi nelle proprie auto, sicuramente non un album da "sottofondo".
Bands come Darkest Hour, As I Lay Dying o Converge a mio avviso hanno avuto molta influenza su questi ragazzi milanesi che grazie a questa buona prima uscita hanno creato le fondamenta per potersi distinguere dalla massa. Non ci resta che aspettare il prossimo lavoro per vedere se le buone promesse saranno mantenute oppure se è solo un flop come succede a molte bands.

Mal wieder findet sich ein Stück südländisches Flavour in meinem Postfach, diesmal in Form der Metalcore-Band ABEL IS DYING, die uns nach unzähligen Live-Auftritten mit der MCD „Gazing From The Abyss" ihren italienischen Hammer demonstrieren wollen. Nach diversen Touren mit Größen, wie BOY SETS FIRE, FEAR MY THOUGHTS und diversen anderen Acts, nimmt man den ganzen Mut zusammen und wagt den eigenen Durchbruch in Form einer Solo-Tour durch Europa.
Und der könnte den Mailändern von ABEL IS DYING durchaus gelingen, denn mit „Gazing From The Abyss" zeigen die Jungs eine furiose Darbietung ihrer musikalischen Fertigkeiten. Das Ganze ist dabei mehr als ordentlich produziert und man erwischt sich schon bei dem ersten Durchlauf beim dezenten Kopfnicken angesichts einer so knallenden CD. Die Schweden-Riffs donnern einem nur so entgegen und die beiden Gitarristen entfachen ein wahres Feuerwerk an eingängigen Melodien, die in Verbindung mit dem schreienden Sänger (der von diversen anderen Mitgliedern der Band unterstützt wird) sofort zünden. Der Drummer ist wahrlich kein Amateur mehr hinter der Schießbude und fabriziert ähnlich wie die beiden Gitarristen ein gutes Grundgerüst innerhalb dessen die Songs der Band arrangiert sind. Wahrlich ein faszinierendes Release, das einfach nur eingängig ist und zu keiner Zeit langatmig wirkt. Anspieltipps sind neben dem Opener „Winchester's Nightmare" das geniale "Eternal Life". Hier gibt es vollkommen gerechtfertigt 8/10 Punkte und eine Empfehlung an Freunde von AS WE FIGHT und AS I LAY DYING. Mal schauen was aus dieser Band noch so wird.

Prima pubblicazione ufficiale per i milanesi Abel Is Dying, che con "Gazing From The Abyss" raccolgono i frutti di quanto seminato in oltre due anni di concerti senza sosta in Italia ed Europa. Questo loro mini-CD di debutto viene pubblicato dalla sempre più affermata Still Life Records e con tutta probabilità permetterà loro di farsi conoscere ulteriormente nel panorama metal-core nazionale ed europeo. Rispetto al già buon "Promo 2005" vanno infatti segnalate parecchie migliorie nel sound della band, che oggi appare notevolmente più affiatata, compatta, migliorata sotto il profilo tecnico e con le idee davvero chiare su che strada intraprendere con la propria musica. Con il succitato promo, il gruppo si era dimostrato piuttosto abile nel reinterpretare quel sound caro ai gruppi più in voga della scena metal-core europea (Caliban e Arkangel, ad esempio), al quale erano state aggiunte grosse dosi di melodia. Giudicando da queste sette nuove tracce, è però evidente che il sestetto oggi gradisca maggiormente sonorità più heavy e aggressive... sempre di stampo metal-core, ma assai più contaminate con il death metal. Per intenderci, Darkest Hour, primi As I Lay Dying e Through The Eyes Of The Dead sono le prime band che vengono alla mente durante l'ascolto di "Gazing From The Abyss". Rispetto ad un anno e mezzo fa, gli Abel Is Dying hanno appesantito il riffing e curato meglio strutture e linee vocali. Soprattutto queste ultime riescono a colpire immediatamente in positivo, in quanto i due frontman - Tommaso Pasi e Paolo Privitera - sono qui riusciti a dividersi egregiamente i compiti, offrendoci una gamma di screaming e growling vocals molto incisiva... cosa che non sempre succedeva nel promo. In definitiva, il gruppo è riuscito a soddisfare tutte le aspettative, presentandosi all'appuntamento migliorato sotto davvero tanti punti di vista. Oltre alle canzoni - sempre veramente godibili ("Grave Poem" è uno dei migliori pezzi ascoltati di recente in questo genere) - va infatti premiata anche la resa sonora, a dir poco potente e professionale. Da quanti mesi era che aspettavo questo CD? Troppi. Gli Abel Is Dying ci presentano il seguito al loro "Promo 2k5", con una formazione invariata, a eccezione del bassista. Il passo avanti compiuto dal gruppo è abissale, le canzoni ora sono farcite di una tecnica nettamente superiore alle precedenti, le due voci hanno raggiunto una sintonia e una varietà notevole, passando dallo scream più disperato al più classico dei "growl" di stampo death metal e scambiandosi continuamente. Il punto di forza di questo nuovo lavoro sono le due chitarre, capaci di creare momenti di melodia mantenendo comunque una botta sonora e una violenza supportata dai cantanti e dalla parte ritmica. Tra le canzone migliori spicca Buried Like Beatrix. Partenza molto cadenzata e melodica per poi staccare a massima velocità con la batteria, stupendo il giro di chitarra che si sente dopo circa un minuto, dopo pochi ascolti mi è rimasto in testa per parecchio tempo. Grave Poem è un'altra delle canzoni degne di nota, con il suo devastante breakdown finale e, per l'ennesima volta, i continui intrecci di chitarra che catturano l'ascoltatore e lo ipnotizzano. A tratti mi ricordano i giri di gruppi come Conducting From A Grave, Summer's End e compagnia varia.
Ottima la produzione, al Cellar Door Studio di Amen (No More Fear, The Miracle, Fumbles In Life), non mi fanno impazzire alcuni suoni di batteria (cassa in particolare e rullante), ma è tutto sapientemente orchestrato per una botta sonora notevole. E gli Abel Is Dying confermano su disco quello che già pensavo seguendo quasi tutti i loro live (incluso il primissimo concerto al Rolling Stone...): Un gruppo che cresce e matura a vista d'occhio e che, in Italia, è sicuramente tra i migliori in ambito metalcore. |

Piccoli metallari crescono, eccome se crescono visto che dal demo (recensito dal sottoscritto su queste pagine) a "Gazing from the abyss" il combo milanese è cresciuto parecchio sia nello stile che nell'interpretazione del genere, più personale e ricercata.
L'attacco di "Winchester's nightmare" è fantastico, brutalità pura regalataci da fraseggi chitarristici devoti alla nuova scuola metal/hardcore californiana e da ritmiche d'assalto ben potenziate dalla produzione eccellente dei Cellar Door Studio di Gianluca Amendolara.
A rendere ancora più hardcore il tutto ci pensano le voci di Tommy e Paul, dai toni differenti ma che ben si sposano alla causa Abel Is Dying dove energia e potenza sono alla base. Elementi quelli segnalati finora che troverete nel corso di tutto il disco, interpretati con grande stile e professionalità da ragazzi che ci credono veramente in ciò che fanno sbattendosi molto.
A testimoniare la loro genuinità ecco un lotto di brani da urlo come "The constellations fever" (veloce come una scheggia impazzita e appesantita da breakdown spezza collo), "Grave Poem" (spettacolare il lavoro svolto su liriche e sezione ritmica) e la fame di metallo nordico di "Buried like Beatrix" che uniti fanno di "Gazing from the abyss" un album eccelso in ogni sua parte. Tanti sinceri complimenti agli Abel Is Dying - "capi del metallo" made in Italy - e alla Still Life Records, che ormai a furia di sfornare dischi di altissima qualità sta viziando non poco i suoi ammiratori!

Ci speravo e sinceramente me lo aspettavo... L'esordio sulla medio-lunga distanza dei milanesi Abel Is Dying è quello che in Italia mancava ancora e che all'estero sta facendo faville: riffoni sverige con ritmiche postcore, breakdown hc e quell'attitudine live che rende il tutto più vero e underground! I nomi di riferimento sono sicuramente Darkest Hour e Job For A Cowboy, ma anche As Blood Runs Black e Dead To Fall, ma invece di imbattermi in un copia e incolla da band al primo album, sono rimasto piacevolmente colpito dalla maturità che queste composizioni sprigionano e dall'enorme (a tratti incredibile) passo in avanti compiuto dalla band rispetto al demo d'esordio. Buona la produzione che, seppur molto hc, suona precisa e potente su tutte e 7 le tracce presenti sul disco e ottima la prova di tutta la band, con particolare riferimento ai due cantanti Tommi e Paul che offrono una prestazione ispirata, senza cadere nella trappola del "pestarsi i piedi". In conclusione, un ottimo inizio per una band che dal vivo non fa prigionieri e che sta dimostrando di avere tante buone idee oltre ad una innata voglia di divertirsi. I guerrieri del metallo sono tra noi, supportateli!

Abel is dying hails outta Milan area, started out in 2004, released a demo in 2005 and is now geared up to set the scene on fire. 'GAZING FROM THE ABYSS' is 23 minutes of crushing metal with 100% HC attitude strongly influenced by Swedish death/black metal and the likes of Darkest Hour, Dead to Fall, As Hope Dies, As I Lay Dying alike. They have all the brutality you have come to love and complex, consecutive chord progressions that bolster a strong and lovely Nordic metal influence that adds a bit of haunting melody to the relentless brutality delivered by the six-piece. 'Gazing from the abyss' is heavy as a sack of concrete and catchy as hell in a ridiculously heavy sort of way.Nothing really new but they do the whole breakdowns, tough guy screams, and more brawn than brains thing so well, they make it sound almost new. Yeah! this thing is a killer disc.Behind the desk at Cellar Door studio was Gianluca Amendolara ( The Miracle, No more fear, Fumbles In Life ) and thanks to this dude the recording sounds amazing. The double kick drums are really dense, HC and sound really fine to me ( good clarity ), the bass is there thickening things up without being central, the guitars are thick and textured with a good edge that keeps them from being stale, and the vocals ( one with more of blacky feel and the other more growl oriented ) sound fine to me - well placed in the mix and pretty well defined.Really rad artwork and layouts.My favourite tracks: 'The Constellation fever', 'Buried like Beatrix', and 'Eternal life'.There are rumours floating around that the dudes will put out their debut full length in 2007. Das erste, was mir bei dieser italienischen Combo einfällt, ist Haunted mit Hardcoreeinschlag. Und das zieht sich auch durch die ganze MCd so weiter durch. Gute vorwärtstreibende Thrashmetalparts, mit einer „melodischen", nicht aufgesetzten Leadgitarre, unterbrochen von sauberen Knüppelparts und Midtempobreaks. Vor allem wird nicht so viel Core „verwendet", dass es abgedroschen klingen könnte.
Gefällt mir gut, was die sechs Mailänder da auf ihrer ersten MCd fabriziert haben. Es sind sechs, da sie einen zweiten Sänger haben. Nummer eins kreischt, was allerdings nicht wie so oft bei anderen Bands ins nervige abdriftet, Nummer zwei hat sich dann dem Growlen verschrieben. Beide Gesänge ergänzen sich aber gut.
Die Produktion gefällt mir auch. Alle Instrumente sind gut rausgearbeitet, ohne zu sauber zu klingen, d.h. der nötige Rotz ist dabei. Ist wirklich ein gutes Brett. Die Aufmachung ist etwas lieblos, die Texte sind als Block ohne Absätze abgedruckt, was halt einfach nicht besonders lesefreundlich ist.
Alles in allem ein durchgehend gutes Minialbum ohne Durchhänger, aber auch ohne absolute Killer.
Auf jedenfall kaufenswert. 8/10
