Stopbiting (hip-hop): Hidden Habitats (Bumble Bee, Hideki, Kamui)

Extra Info

Lo_Fi 429B Eastlake Ave. E., 206-254-2824 $3/NC ladies before 11 p.m Every week Tuesday, 9:00pm

This Tuesday night hip hop party, organized by DJ collective Fourthcity, has been going strong in this low-key spot for years now. What's said most often about the Lo_Fi is that it feels like somebody's loft party. A long hallway connects two spacious lounges styled with a casual flair—nondescript couches, a turntable mounted and silently spinning on the wall, tasteful use of urban art—that refuses to date them. The front room was updated this year to create more space for dancing, and it's where most people gathered on a recent visit to ogle the breakdancers. DJ Introcut spun classics by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, too-hot new stuff by Modeselektor and Parisian rappers TTC, and even house music when asked. Some shook their heads at that move, but I applaud the relative risk of mixing it up (that's what a DJ's supposed to do, right?). In the back, beatboxer AudioPoet shared the mic with a raucous bunch of freestylers while an evenly-balanced M/F crowd danced to DJs Hideki, Kamui, and Bumblebee. Like the mash-up of designer and DIY fashion often seen on its patrons, both the Lo_Fi and Stop Biting have the tone just right.
