Current mood:  adventurous

In the coming months, Uptown will be doing work on MN NOW's HPreVent campaign- getting volunteers out and spreading awareness any way we can in uptown. Several in our chapter have seen HPV touch the lives of those we love and are anxious to take more action in this area in the upcoming year.

This spring, Uptown NOW hosted a large salary negotiation discussion forum and had nearly 40 young women in attendance. A facilitator led the group through a discussion of ways to ensure that you are getting what you're worth at work. Attendees had the chance to share frustrations, experiences, and ideas for what has worked and what hasn't. The Uptown chapter will be looking to host another event on the topic of pay equity in the coming months. Watch for details soon.

  • Join us THIS Saturday as a part of the HPreVent campaign (work to raise awareness of cervical cancer prevention and the HPV vaccine). We'll be jumping into the annual Minneapolis Zombie Pub Crawl in a group of zombie nurses and doctors spreading awareness among the crowd- handing out stickers and condoms with info about HPV prevention.
  • We also have our Grrl Power Happy Hours scheduled through January- details below (these are our informal meetings and chance to network).
  • Remember to renew your NOW membership or join if you aren't currently a member! Your NOW membership supports important advocacy and education work at the state and national level! Join at http://www.mnnow.org

Hello, All.

The anti-choice organization, "Operation Rescue"  and other rightist groups are planning a protest in front of Dr. Carhart's clinic outside of Ohama, Nebraska on Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29..

Dr. Carhart has worked with Dr. Tiller, in Wichita, Kansas, to provide safe and legal abortions for women for several decades. Dr. Tiller's clinic closed following his recent murder, but Dr. Carhart is planning to continue to provide abortions for women in Wichita.

As you know, these anti-choice organizations have been systematically attacking abortion clinics through violence, intimidation, and threats, often with the complicity, or at very least, the neglect of local and federal politicians and law enforcement agencies.  The Federal Marshals put in place to protect Dr. Carhart (who is now the number one target on these rightist web-sites) after the murder of Dr. Tiller, have been withdrawn!

We need to defend Dr. Carhart and the clinic that provides abortions through a counter-demonstration.  We have to show these anti-women groups that we are not afraid of them and we will not allow them to strip us of our right to control our bodies and our lives.
Abortion is legal and it is our right.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) is calling for a counter demonstration on August 27, at the clinic near Omaha, Nebraska to do just that.  I, and other women are interested in organizing a contingent of women and men from Minnesota (and everywhere) to go to Nebraska on August 27 to join in the defense of our most basic right; aprerequisite for our equality.  The larger the numbers we have, the more effective we are.

Please let me know if you would be interested in organizing and/or participating in this important defense of our rights.  If you contact me, please let me know if there are any planning groups already in place that we can join, or if you would like to be part of planning/attending this.  After I hear from some of you, I will call/email so that we can meet.  Please distribute this email to any other groups/people that you think may be interested.

I have pasted two calls for action from NOW in Chicago and Kansas below.
I have also pasted two web-sites below.  One with more information on what is at stake and one is a face-book site of NOW calling for this action.

I look forward to hearing from you!

In Solidarity,

Natalie Morrison

Kansas NOW to Rally in Support of Dr. Carhart

The Kansas National Organization for Women will counter-protest demonstrations by Operation Rescue, Rescue the Heartland, and Nebraskans United for Life on Friday August 28th and Saturday the 29th outside of the Bellevue Health Clinic located at 1002 W. Mission Avenue in Bellevue, Nebraska. Kansas NOW will assemble to protect and defend Dr. Carhart’s clinic in Nebraska. Kansas NOW also strongly supports his intention to open a clinic in Kansas, as the assassination of Dr. George Tiller has left a noticeable void in meeting women’s healthcare needs in the state. State Coordinator Marla Patrick stated, “Dr. Carhart provides a lawful and potentially life saving service that is demonized by extremists who hold no respect for women and their rights. The continued harassment and intimidation of physicians like Dr. Carhart and patients seeking healthcare will not go unchallenged.” Marla Patrick KS NOW State Coordinator 785-227-3854 785-212-0162, coordinator@ksnow.org

Omaha Counter Protest for Dr. Carhart's Clinic

Thank you everyone for putting your name on this list for getting out to Omaha to support Dr. Carhart!

Kansas NOW has just sent an email out to the rest of NOW asking for our support on August 28-29. They desperately need the numbers out there, as three anti-choice groups including Operation Rescue will be gathering their forces in an attempt to "Keep It Closed". This is only 2 1/2 weeks away! However, we are all determined to protect Dr. Carhart, only one of THREE late-term abortion providers left in the COUNTRY!!

I am right now getting a quote for one or two buses. Depending on the number of people, if we only have one bus it will leave late Friday night, drive through the night, and arrive early Saturday morning; then depart Omaha late afternoon/early evening after the protest on Saturday and return very early morning Sunday. This way, no one will have to pay for a hotel, everyone can sleep on the bus (we will also provide time for rest stops and food stops when appropriate). After I receive the quote I will figure out how much individuals will have to chip in for the bus. If we have many people, we can possibly set up a second bus for those who don't have to work on Friday, that would leave late Thursday night and return Friday evening - so we have people out there on Friday as well.

To save women's lives, please help me in gathering more people to join us! I am meeting with my NOW chapter on Wednesday to solidify any details, and after will get the word out to as many organizations as possible. Tell your friends, your organizations, any one that will come support us! As you gather more names, please send to me with emails so I can build an email list & also adjust transportation needs.

Please also let me know, if you could or had to choose, which day you are available to be out in Omaha: Friday, Saturday, or both. That will help me determine what kind of transportation situation we can arrange. Perhaps just a van will work for Friday, for example.

Thank you everyone!! I will work hard to make this happen.

Please also keep in mind that this effort can be supported financially, as well, if a person is unable to come with us. Our transportation, as well as Kansas NOW's efforts to provide water to everyone, signs & materials, and their transportation is costly, so if someone would rather donate $20 to DuPage NOW or Kansas NOW, they may do so as well.

Best regards,

Michelle Fadeley

DuPage NOW President
