Ever since I read the Hobbit for the first time at the age of 8 I have been a fan of fantastical writing. At the time (1976) there were not that many good fantasy books available, and many of the ones coming out were obviously pale and unsuccessful attempts at copying the style of Tolkien rather than finding their own voice. Even today, when there is a plethora of fantasy books available I still have a hard time finding an author worth reading. Therefor, in an attempt to help others who may be in a similar situation I thought I might pass on a few of my favorite Authors for your consideration.
Tolkien of course goes without saying. I will only add that the Silmarillion should not be missed either. It can be a little difficult getting through the opening creation of the heavens and earth, but soon picks up. On the other hand I also read History books for fun. I could never get through any of the lost tales.
The Earth Sea Trilogy by Ursula K. LeGuin-a fascinatingly unique world well written. She has also written many other worthy books, especially in the Science Fiction genre.
Neil Gaimon very well written urban fantasy balanced with humor
These are authors which any fantasy reader should be familiar with, but in subsequent posts I will discuss some lesser known authors. In the mean time, please let me know who your favorite authors are.
