In case you hadn't heard--I recently quit my job.

It wasn't that I didn't like being the publisher at Image Comics-- I did-- but over the years it became obvious that as effective as I was as a publisher--it was getting in the way of creating comics and I got into this business to be a creator--not an administrator. The ideas were stacking up like cordwood and I simply did not have the time to get things done. I had a new project that I wanted to work on (I pencilled the first issue) and that was just sitting there gathering dust--and there were other projects that I had intended to work on--the Kirby stuff--and it looked unlikely that I'd ever get started on that. That, and Savage Dragon was perpetually late and that was a constant irritant because it was a book set "in real time" and sometimes that meant I was only covering a day or two out of a year.

No fun.

So--I quit my job.

Now--I know how much everybody loves a good conspiracy theory. I know it would be a lot juicier story if I had been leaned on to resign or if a bloody coup had been staged or some such but it wasn't the case. I was at a convention in Charlotte and fans were bemoaning the lateness of Savage Dragon and it really hit me how much I missed the book--and missed working on the book--and how much I wished it was coming out on a regular basis too. After talking things over with a few pals and coming to the realization that Eric Stephenson was ideally suited for the job and that since the pieces were in place and the ship sailing in a good direction there really could be no better time to make the transition-- I made a decision. By the following week--in Chicago--I was telling anybody who would listen that I'd made the decision to step down.

So there you go.

Look for a hell of a lot more comics from me and a lot of great things from Image Comics.

As far as I'm concerned--this is the best news ever!

I know I was pretty excited when I heard the news because I knew that meant more Savage Dragon and probably more other Erik Larsen goodness. Sure enough, I was right. I'm looking forward to it.

Naturally, I was disappointed to hear the news but, nonetheless, I'm very happy that you're ready to take on Savage Dragon full time, Erik.

Good luck and best wishes to you.

Congratulations on a great run as publisher and an even bigger Congrats on being able to move back into a job you love! This is definitely an exciting time to be a Larsen fan.
I can't wait to see all the goodies you'll be throwing our way!

Oh, one question: Will this move allow you to travel to more conventions? Especially the Calgary Comic Expo which will take place next April or May up here in the Great White North? ..

Just do what makes you happy Erik. And if it's putting out more issues of SAVAGE DRAGON, then everyone wins! Everyone being those fans with such fine discriminating tastes...!!

It's sad & awesome,
all at the same time. Eric will make a great publisher & I always clamor for the Savage to hit shelves. So, it sounds like a truly brilliant win win situation.

Best,
D=

I hate to see you go...Image has really come on strong under your tenure and I'm happy to say that the majority of my favorite titles fall under the Image banner.
But I understand the call to create and I'm looking forward to seeing what's stirring around in that noggin' of yours! Good luck Erik, but most importantly have fun! - Brandon

This is good news. You did what you had to do to get Image comics back on track and it does make perfect sense to fall back into what you do best...make kick a$$ comics! Looking
forward to getting my Savage Dragon fix more often, Erik.

I can totally identify with your decision. I quit my job this month as well. I have the entire month to draw because I won't start substituting again till August 20th. It's... the best feeling I've felt in a long time. It's scary but exciting.

I liked you being in the publisher seat but I'm sure whoever you trusted enough to take over will do a good job. Being a big fan of your work for a long time, I'm glad to hear you're going to be creating more stuff. I'm sure all the other fans out there feel the same way.
:)

Erik, you know how people often go up to a military soldier, and say, "thank you for your service" and offer to buy them a drink, or pay for their dinner. Being immersed in the somics culture as I am, that is the only thing I can think of when I heard of your decision to step down. Thank you for your service sir. I'd like to treat you to dinner next time you're in the St. Louis area.

I hate to remind you but it's like that old Mafia term " In for a penny out for a pound " you may not be the shot caller but the bar you brought to the company is high and I agree that E2 will continue to push and break new grounds like you had developed............PLUS one good note this gives you time to get Arthur Adams back in line so we can do his Comico Gumby material with you in 2009 for Image!!!

When you took the publisher job I just assumed it was temporary. So you stayed longer than I expected. Looks like you did a good job since the company still exists so there you go.

Now, you have no excuses for late Dragon issues.

Well, as a comic fan I'm excited by your return to more regular work on "Savage Dragon" and I'm sure the position of publisher has been filled well over at image.

On a side note, I'm constantly amazed that after so many years on the "Savage Dragon", that you still have the passion you do for the characters and the universe you crafted. It's really an inspiration in perseverance.
