Who Gives Kudos:

Monday, June 11, 2007

Our friend A.S.A.P.-ABSOLUTE SOUND/ABSOLUTE POWER wrote a note the other day suggesting that we add Clearance Gatemouth Brown and Mighty Joe Young to our photo gallery. Good point, in a general sorta way. That gallery's been the same since this page was created and isn't it about time we added some more pix of top blues musicians? Seems we could at least expand our gallery to fill up one whole page!

So we welcome your suggestions. Whose photo should be added to the twelve already there? Please leave your nominations in the form of comments to this blog. Any supporting arguments as to why your nominee is worthy to be among the blues gods will be welcome. Our judges selections will be final, but if we choose your guy or gal, we'll give you credit below his/her photo. And if you already have a great photo of your fave, send the e-file or URL link along in an email please. It'll save us having to do an image search and probably cleaning up the image file.

Thanks for your support!

Well,it's missing Magic Sam,Ike Turner,Freddie King and T-Bone Walker just for starters and you could get a better picture of Lightnin' Hopkins, maybe one with his shades. And a picture of me!

Little Walter, Rice Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II), Junior Wells (three harmonica greats) - Albert King, (another highly influential guitarist) Ray Charles (married blues and gospel), and Willie Dixon (the best songwriter ever) are the first names that come to mind. John Hammond, Jr. as a lifelong interpreter, and you can't include Bo Diddley without including Chuck Berry...

Louis Jordan's jump blues was the springboard between the blues of the 30s and he rhythm and blues of the 50s.

Well...it's a hard question to answer completely...I'll write down a few names I didn't see on main page: Blind Willie Johnson, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Willie Dixon, Albert King, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Reverend Gary Davis, Memphis Slim, Big Bill Broonzy, and among white bluesmen, I definitely think that you might put one of the greatest white blues players ever: Mr. Johnny Winter.

Yes man....
there is one guy who really should be in your gallery. It is Abi Wallenstein, born in Jerusalem and living in Germany. He is playing and living the blues for more than 40 years now and is helping the blues-community whenever he can. His album BLUES CULTURE is one of the most impressing for the last years.

we should have some kind of color on the page u can see what im talking about on my page under my books seciton i have text wrapped around a photo with an emerson quote.

I have some nominations, I'll probably think of even more later, but...

Robert Lockwood, Jr.
(greatness, background and longevity)

Hubert Sumlin (one of the best resume's in the blues world)

Memphis Slim (great on his own, when he teamed up with Willie Dixon, wow)

Freddie King (vocals AND guitar)

Mance Lipscomb (the Texas songster)

Jimmy Reed (how many "Jimmy Reed" shuffles have you heard? billions?)

Blind Lemon Jefferson (listen to those licks and then trace them forward)

Big Bill Broonzy (top shelf)

Johnny Winter (outstanding, especially on slide)

Taj Mahal (likely the most prolific bluesman ever)

I'd like to see Lonnie Johnson somewhere... from early blues fiddle to amazingly tasty guitar work with people from Lil Armstrong (& hubby) to Duke Ellington to the pseudonymous "Willie Dunn & the Gin-bottle Four" (which sometimes included Hoagy Carmichael adding a little 'scat'), Lonnie was all over the place. He, John Hurt & Mance Lipscomb have been my principal "guitar teachers"... and I'd like to see them all in the gallery. Thanks...
^..^

First I would like to say that I just discovered your page, and blog, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of information and reference. It is really too bad no one can become your friend anymore, but that won't prevent me from being one anyway.
As far as the missing names and pictures, I have noticed but maybe I'm mistaken, that there is no mention of Skip James. That needs no supporting arguments. I will send other names in the future. You might consider also among unknown modern  bluesmen Teddy Nighter.
Anyway thanks for this wonderful gallery and for the whole idea.
