Who Gives Kudos:

What do I have in common with Rudy Giuliani, John Kerry, Bob Dole, Joe Torre, Nelson Mandela, Sean Connery, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Emperor Akihito of Japan, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Colin Powell, Quincy Jones, Roger Moore, Sydney Poitier, and Robert De Niro?
Like them, and along with thousands of other men, I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Since my liver transplant, my health has been monitored by a crack team of doctors; in the course of this program, I have periodic blood tests and clinic visits. At my last clinic, my doctor noticed that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels had increased over the last period. He recommended that I see a urologist, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. I have decided to have it removed in early December with da Vinci robotic surgery. Since we..ve caught it very early, and it..s small and slow-growing, I fully expect to have a rapid and complete recovery.

I am feeling energetic as always, and all my scheduled appearances will occur as planned.

As you know, I urge everyone to become an organ donor to help save lives. Now, I am also urging all men: speak to your doctor about having periodic regular PSA screening for early detection of prostate cancer- you may save your own life.

Phil,

Much love to you and I am so glad that your prostate cancer was caught early.

I know we've never met (in any physical sense at least), but if you need me, I am here for you and your family.

Namaste Phil,

Glad to hear that you caught this condition so early.

I just saw your show at Vegoose on Sunday, it was almost like going back in time.  Much more like the Dead than the Dead is now.  I was never a Phish-head, but man, Trey is the perfect choice to get that old feeling back.  Keep on truckin'!

Phil- my family wishes you the best of success with this event.  You'll get through just fine.  You and your music have been such a big part of my life, I wanted to thank you personally for sharing your gift with all of us.  You've worked long and hard all these years and I can't really imagine what life would be like without all the many influences you and the boys made on our generation's life.  I am an organ donor because of your repeated efforts to get the word out.  Last November at NJPAC and again in NYC at the Beacon in February was great.  Many many thanks to you.

Best of luck on the proceedure, and come back and see us soon.

Peace!!!!!

Keep your head up Phil, I'm sure that it was really hard to hear that you have developed something that so many men can be taken from the world. I know that you can make it through this, and that's what makes life so great, in order to feel so sad about something you had to have felt so good about something. I'm glad to hear that you caught it in its early stages and I can't wait to see you when you come around.
Peace and Much Love to you and your family. I know you all can make it through this.

Phil, if there is anyone that will beat it and come back stronger than ever, I know it's you. Thanks so much for everything you have given me over the years, and you continue to be an inspiration. I mean, hey, how many guys are out there kicking the ass you do and taking the musical chances you guys do every night, and obviously loving every second of it? Keep it rolling!

Dear Mr. Lesh:

God bless you and your family. I am so glad that your prostate cancer was detected early, and was fully resectable, and am happy, too, that your liver transplant was successful. Glad to see you are going to be playing in January at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland--my husband and I plan to be there. (I'll bet former Trailblazer and Deadhead Bill Walton will be there, too!)

I am an operating room nurse (in fact, I met you in a certain San Francisco medical center's surgery waiting room when I came out to give you an update on how surgery on someone close to you was going, several years back--I was one of the nurses in the room.) You very graciously shook my hand, thanked me graciously for the progress report, and even gave me an autograph at that time that said "Keep On Rockin'!"

Perhaps, if you or Mrs. Lesh get this message personally, you will allow my husband and me to meet you once again backstage at the Crystal Ballroom concert in January, so that we can extend our good wishes in person. I have been a fan of yours for decades. We probably even know some people in common (not just surgeons)--when I am working or visiting in San Francisco, I live at a certain Buddhist dharma center over in the Haight; I'm told the Dead were themselves involved in the center back in the '60s and '70s.

Feel free to contact me anytime. I'd be honored to come back and be your operating room nurse in the Bay area should you (or those close to you) need further surgery--just ask.
