EP! is the second studio outing by supergroup Chum, comprised of Chip Merritt (drums, bass, and guitar) and Tong Merritt (bass, guitar, and vocals), as well as former State of Ohio drummer and local hero Shrawan Flowers (vocals, mouth harp, guitar, and drums). Even rawer than their debut (Typhoid Mary EP), they retain the same amp'ed-up electric blues reminiscent of early Grand Funk Railroad or Steppenwolf. The non-polished outcome heard on their sophomore effort is undoubtedly the direct result of the recordings location, a random cabin in wherever the fuck Ohio, which they inhabited for two days shortly after the passing of the facilities' owner. Immediately, the proceedings are thrust into high gear with a languorous and seething "Bad Water Us". While not the extended barnburner it became in concert, it gets things off to a rousing start. The lightweight up-tempo "Cracker Park" could easily be mistaken for a college radio hit, especially with Flowers' strong vocal performance.Chum do what they do best, returning to their bummer rock roots on the suitably named "Severed Heads". A heavier number with Flowers unleashing rounds of impressive fretwork churning atop the slow moving backbeat. Tong's pumping bassline opening of "Slip and Slide" is perfectly augmented by some organic mouth harp courtesy of Flowers before launching into an explosive assault of pure, unadulterated proto- metal. The opposite can be said of the understated "8 Dollar" although clocking in at just over three minutes, the song is a showcase for Flowers' immorally underrated lead guitar. Fittingly, this album comes to an end on a high note with an unlisted track "Chocolate Thunder". A full-blown centerpiece, revealing Chum's strength as a formidable power trio on the autobiographically-inspired track. The number is quite possibly the finest original to have been worked up by the band.
