Right on as always Pat.

Thanks for the continued commitment.

I can't really see a time when religion will be totoaly dropped, as long as children are brainwashed with it from being young and older people crave acceptance and have that fear of the unknown (death), then we're going to be in this state for a while.

Having said all that though the world is not as blind as it was back in 1908, so maybe another hundred years and we'll only have a handful of religious people in the west? Then again how are people in the middle east and developing world countires going to "get free"? There's also the little fact of the west being spinelss when it comes to Islam.

The only problem with this is, that our "religions of peace" ain't gonna leave peacefully. And the, after they're gone, oceans of blood later, people will be fighting over something else. Cause it's in our nature.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I mean really, what sort of defective super powerful deity, would not only relish, but require, worship from it's creations. A vain, malevolent, capricious one, to be sure.

:D

Wow! Amazing! In this video, your description of religion works just as well as a description of government in the USA.
Americam politicians, like clergy, want us all unarmed, poor, and stupid.

Indeed, it is true that people are waking up to the absurdity that is religious belief. And thankfully, the transition is occurring alot faster in my opinion than I had originally thought. But then we only need to think about how religion works. It comes in fast like a wave of mass hysteria and sinks its teeth in before the gullible masses know what bit them, and just as quickly as it takes hold, it seems to release its hold on "enlightened" individuals just as quickly. Removal is the reverse of installation right?
Perhaps now we see our freethought (which belongs to EVERYONE) sweeping across our friends, neighbors, and indeed our "intellectual" adversaries like a weaponized antibiotic that only affects those with some shred of common sense. Perhaps soon enough we will have a vaccine against the "vaccine of life" as I like to call religious belief. And the best part is the only side effects are mild to moderate, with an increased chance of awareness and logical thinking.
Well done Pat

For anyone that is debating whether to drop your religion or not, the fear of losing something familiar is stronger than the fear of the unknown. Once you choose to be your own authority, it may be a gradual shift until you are fully comfortable in claiming yourself independent of that former external control. People still in that frame of mind will pressure you to come back, but look at what they talk about, as Pat has mentioned, it will be things based on putting the fear back into you - which is akin to putting a gun to your head and giving you only one "good" option - "Choose our religion or the trigger will be pulled."

One of the worst consequences of the "empty obedience" religion advocates is that it detracts from actual debates about moral gray areas. I personally know many people who go to church and get advice from their pastor-- imagine the social change which could occur if those people spent an hour every week studying very philosophical questions in a more intellectual way.

An excellent video, Pat. One of your best.

I'm glad to see you taking a break from criticizing Islam for this one. My fear of late has been that, although you talk sense, focusing on Islam has come to give the impression that you have a problem with muslims specifically, and not religion in general. I also worry that it has led to a certain amount of support from undesirable (racist/bigot/BNP) types. I, alongside a lot of us here, fully understand what it is that you are saying but its not me/us that you are trying to convince. As a potential hate figure (sad as that may seem), your opponents will be all to quick to seize an opportunity to portray you as negatively as possible.

Anyway, i think this video gives a better impression of you as an atheist and serves well to emphasise the message of peace, freedom and tolerance that underlines atheism.

Nice one! :)

Religion is the simple utilization of FEAR. It can scare the ignorant into submission of the given institution. The fear is soo bad that it can trump the fear of death itself. Just like any strong drug it can throw a person's sense of survival out of whack, in turn making a person hopelessly dependent on it for their perceived ultimate survival (ex. after life). As most drug addictions go, I often see the addict become putty in the hands of their pusher.

"Philosophy is the art of asking questions without answers, while Religion is the art of answers without asking questions."

P.S Thanx for the add.
