Canadian
beatmaker VLooper and Ethiopian counterpart KenLo both have a penchant
for creating tracks with a disjointed, electronic bent. Their
collaboration, "Bullesbubbles," is no different, humming and twitching
with energy.
Equally suited for a cruise down the boulevard on Saturday night or a
late-night trip through the far reaches of space, "Bullesbubbles" is at
its best when VLooper and KenLo keep things uncluttered: the pleading
synthesizer and chorus of "Ven-us," the old-school boombox drums and
loping bassline of "Screans" and the chopped-up mellowness of
"Marchanddesoul."
Both producers show a flair for mixing the natural and the synthetic,
creating a sound that has its roots in hip-hop, but turns an eye toward
more expansive things as well.
Its stitched-together feel may be a bit jarring at first - and on
occasion, it can be overly so - but just keep nodding your head, and
most likely you'll settle into the groove.
