I think some folks are in there that aren't really libertarians, or at least aren't really strict about it. For example, someone brought up that it would be difficult (can't remember his words exactly) and implied that it'd be hypocritical to criticize public schooling since we're at a public university...I guess he forgot about the whole state violence and theft being used to support such a system...but whatever. The public schools most libertarians have an issue with is the primary schooling since they have monopolies and you're forced to go by law(unless you're home-schooled, but I don't know the laws concerning that if there are any. What I do know is that tax money does go to public schooling and is wasted quite a bit). The way I see it, boycotting such things will not get rid of the programs. If you don't get the benefits, someone else will, so might as well use government services since it's like getting a refund on taxes...and there's no incentive to stop after getting your value in taxes because whatever is used has already been set to be spent on by the government. That being said, I wouldn't go out of the way to create new coercive programs, as that would directly be in violation of libertarianism...but from a practical view I do believe in taking steps in the right direction like using LESS force or being less wasteful and moving more towards a market solution. Then, hopefully people will see that markets work and there will be enough people to agree to have full privatization.
Anyways, think it's great that the group is "big tent" and allows many people in. We gotta focus on what brings us together. There are also plans to have debates/discussions on specific issues later on, which I think is a great thing even if it's something that divides us. Someone mentioned that maybe we shouldn't debate certain things because they're divisive...but if you're commited to truth or logic or even just the morality of your arguments, I don't see any problems with debating/discussing things. You can disagree with people without yelling at them or getting mad. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get along with someone
you disagree with, unless of course the disagreement is the Non
Aggression Principle/Axiom or something and the person is threatening
to hurt you, lol.
I dunno what's in store for this group, but I sure am glad that it's here.
:-)
