So I find myself
Per usual
Admonishing my daughter
Bellowing from the hot kitchen
That she needs to stop
Wasting water

She's got to understand that
Shit is getting drastic
When all consumable liquids
Come encased in plastic

I'm trying to teach her to conserve
Our most precious resource
Cuz it's the imprudence of humans
That's created our discourse

More than a billion people have
Inadequate drinking water – worldwide
And California's supply
is going to go dry
Before she's old enough to drive

88% of the world's deaths
Come from waterborne diseases
Cuz, you see, the supply will get dirty
Before it completely ceases

Our biodiversity is already being neglected
While most of our wetlands remain unprotected
Our fish are full of mercury and continue
To be rejected
Australia's watching a city dry up –
Now THAT's what I call being naturally selected
Policies are ineffective
And if left unchecked
Americans will be affected
And I'm just trying to teach her some respect

Instead of preparing our children
Teaching them to raise crops
We satiate their A.D.D
With Kool Aid and Xbox

Czechoslovakia, Egypt and Ethiopia are all
Engaged in warfare
They are feeling the scarcity of water
And are trying to hoard their own share

And here in the states,
Those of us with ghetto passes
Won't be considered
Part of the privileged masses
They'll be drinking lovely
while we are denied access
Watching in horror
As our communities become fractions
As our leaders continue to not be held
Accountable for their actions
And I'm just wondering how thirsty you have to get
To show alittle passion!

Cuz we are withering y'all
In this new world order
Withering away
Like flowers
When they're denied ample water

the piece has a great aim and you succeed at including alot of statistical info (war in egypt? i don't have time to fact check that at the moment but is that correct?).

the issue: style, style, style

i think you can include more style/poetic devices in the delivery of this message to make it more 'poetic'

i also think you may be 'boxing yourself in' by sticking to the a/a/b/b/ couplet style...this piece might flow more freely absent such constraints

it does flow, but i think you could make it even better if you weren't sticking to such a rigid rhyme scheme (and this is coming from an emcee! but poetry delivered absent a syncopated beat or the constrains of rap lyricism has no required structure...you could really go wild with it...see e.e. cummings, sonia sanchez, etc, all of whom you know intimately, i'm certain)

a for effort, a for message, b for execution

masterful delivery is what makes the message sing!

ps: re-read it from the perspective of a skeptic, someone who is begrudging about being convinced that this issue is important and make it warm that skeptic's heart...you dig? perhaps more info about the human consequences of water scarcity? images of children dying in famine-ravished areas ruined by drought, discussion of the water-shortage based conflict in darfur (nomadic versus agrarian, where the nomadic folk's animals are drinking water needed for agrarian progress/crop growth)

more thoughts later...perhaps by phone...

Wow, that is deep. I love the way you started off with such a mundane situation, reprimanding your daughter, and was able to spin it off into a deeper discussion of world events. Seriously, this reminds me of the 2nd verse in "Beat Street Breakdown" by Melle Mel.
