I got bored with reading the life story of WWW on our main page so thought I would ’tidy up’ and stick it in here!
So...if you are really interested....here goes...
The Band, the Wild Wolds Women was formed in 1999 when four female musicians decided that they wanted to present a female musical viewpoint in a local music scene which was thriving, but appeared to be dominated by men. They, at no time, set out to be anti-men, (as if :-) !) just to try to represent a woman’s point of view, in song and music.
At that time, Jacqui had yet to join the group, and Jo was the lead vocalist. They began by covering a variety of songs they liked, written by others. Very soon, they moved onto writing their own material, Helen writing the majority of the songs with Sharon adding some of hers,( plus, more recently, Jacqui, one and hopefully, more of hers,) to their mix of subject matter which can be serious, thought-provoking, passionate, light-hearted or tongue-in-cheek.
Their songs often have a folk/blues style but they enjoy varying their approach depending upon the subject matter. They have songs about a wide variety of topics…from the tragedy of Sep 11th to ones about strange female underwear!
In 2002 they recorded a CD. It consisted of eleven original tracks, many of which have enjoyed plays on local radio and television on several occasions.
Not long after the CD was finished, Jacqui joined the group, a welcome addition, bringing new musical instrument skills to add to already unique blend of instruments. The band performed in a wide variety of locations in the area, for private parties, gigs at clubs, charity nights, and a wide variety of local community events and supported other artists.
Reluctantly, about this time, Jo decided, because of commitments towards her young family, that she needed to step down from the group. This left the group with their current line-up.
As time went by, they added more harmonies, with Sharon, Jacqui and Helen taking a more equal role in the vocals. In the last year, amongst many other gigs, the band have appeared on local TV playing a set with an Irish music flavour, varied sets at their local folk club, been featured and performed on their local radio station and performed at a big Celtic festival in the area.
The band have also organised and performed at a charity event with other musician friends, which was so successful that they have decided to make it an annual event in the area. They were listed as resident performers of the Faldingworth Live, while it ran, and enjoyed performing regularly there in addition to their other gigs.
The Wild Wolds Women love making music, they hope they succeed in their aim to write and play material that all can enjoy… they have been told that their ability to point out the differences between the sexes without being offensive or putting down either of them makes their music a joy to listen to.
You asleep now?!
Helen xx
PS We are currently re-evolving in a more flexible line-up while Sharon enjoys her beautiful new addition to her family, Paige, born March 2008! We will be playing as a duo/trio as well as quartet for a while.
