Many years ago—we’ll call them The 90’s--I used to live in the Upper Haight.  And, in reality, living in the Upper Haight isn’t as much of a hot mess as you’d think.  It’s far worse.  Imagine having the counter culture’s version of Pier 39 at your front door step with a constant parade of fanny packing German tourists, suburbanite gutter punks along with the occasional freaked out acid head who still think it’s the summer of love and you’d be spot on.  But amongst these banal stereotypes there were a few truly unique characters.  My favorite was the guy who drove a bright orange 1975 Camaro SS up and down Haight Street with the windows rolled down blasting 70’s Butt Rock from the stock 8 track stereo. And this wasn’t your typical Van Halen/Zeppelin style of Butt Rock; the kind of butt rock Lennie Kravitz wishes he could write. Oh no, this was serious Butt Rock.  Foghat.  38 Special.  Blue Oyster Cult.  It was the flavor of Butt Rock that you secretly know all the words to.  And still to this day I can’t hear Nazareth’s "Hair of the Dog" and not have a fond little flashback to that orange Camaro. 

…And speaking of epic Randy Rhodes solos, tomorrow night (Wednesday 10.14.09) marks my first broadcast as an official resident DJ for Fog City Funk on NSB Radio.  I’ll be taking the 2nd Wednesday of the month from here on out. I’ve had tons of fun as their occasional guest DJ and I’m super stoked to be a resident DJ for this show.  So please tune in tomorrow night and support.  If anything you can jump in the chat room and heckle us.  Then on Thursday, come down to Shine and check out the new flavors Ploom has developed.  If you’ve never tried a Ploom (and I know you’re Ploom curious…) this is your chance to give it a puff before their launch in November.
