Current mood:  worried

Rather than try to explain to you what this is all about, I am just going to direct you here.  While it may sound lilke a great idea, what it means for us is that come a few years from now, we may be SHUT DOWN!

But there is something you can do.  From John Wickham, the owner of Elysium and my benevolent master:

"This is the survey for the City of Austin about the plan for Red River in 2012. This is the LAST CHANCE for public comment. All surveys must be in by May 31st. Please suffer through and fill out the survey, and if you know anyone else who enjoys any bars/bands on Red River, please send it to them as well.

The first part covers your interest in the Red River/Waller Creek area, then your choice of what should be done in different areas along Waller Creek/Red River, then lastly the comment section.

Please fill out the survey.

Red River Survey / http://www. ci. austin. tx. us/wallercreek/survey. cfm

Thanks,

John Wickham
Elysium
President Red River District"

Please do what you can to help save us!

Thanks
~Julie~

You got it - even from way up north I commented on that motherfucker.
It makes my heart sick that Austin would want to turn into San Antonio! It has already changed so much in the past ten years, not much for the better, why would we want hoardes of tourists on some shitty creek? Much love John "Gothfather"! xoxoxo

I filled out the survey. So they want Austin to become San Antonio? Houston proposed something similar a couple of years....paved walkways along the scenic Buffalo Bayou. Nothing ever got going on that one. It would be kind of nice though sitting next to the Bayou and watching the dead bodies float by.

10 years ago, Red River was a shit hole street with ratty old furniture stores and crackheads every block. So now, after all the dirty work was done by business owners to clean up the street and create a viable alternative to the Douchebag 6th / Warehouse Districts, the city wants to come in a mow everything down for a fucking riverwalk. Want a riverwalk? MOVE TO SAN AN-FUCKING-TONIO or The Woodlands.

I hate surveys... I hate reading them and I hate filling them out... HATE!!

I filled this out and forwarded it to everyone I know.

I was downtown for a concert and "residents" complained about the noise. It was They Might Be Giants.

No violence. No anger. Just Music. I say if they want to destroy something destroy the new residents and keep the music alive.

i mean do not get me wrong i would love to see them do something with that river... or whatever it is i lived there last year and was always like uh what is down there?? it was a bit of an eye sore... i just do not understand why they would have to get rid of the red river district for it?? just fix it up and leave the district as is...

As someone who's been going to your club even way back when before it was your club (Sanitarium). I would hate to see this happen. John was right when he said they made Red River a desirable entertainment district. If it weren't for John, Randal, Woody, etc... that street would still be a piece of shit. Now the big wigs want to take it all away. Let's not let that happen.

I just wanted to stop by and say thanks to everyone for all the continued support. You guys rock, and hopefully together we can keep the Red River District around for years to come.

On behalf of John and all the Elysian family, as well as the rest of the Red River District, thank you.

I read this months ago, re-posted and gave my sanest bitch rant on the survey, stating exactly how stupid the whole river walk thing is.
However, I realize that there are other things that can be done in order to save the Red River District, and I would like to offer a suggestion to the building and business owners of the area:

Please consider the feasibility of acquiring historical designations for your buildings or even the district as a whole.

Historical designations are intended to preserve and legally protect older buildings and neighborhoods. Designations exist on the local(city), state, and federal levels and there are different requirements for each.

While I don't have much research into eligibility requirements and procedures at this time, I will happily research this for you and provide information if needed.

Personally I can't think of a more effective way of telling city counsel to go fuck themselves.
