I have several self hosted word press blogs that I maintain on a regular basis. There is one thing that I noticed when I first started my blogs is that I had no way of telling the world that i have updated my blog. 

Then I found a free service called ping.fm, this site rocks because what you can do here is join a lot of social network sites and you can actually ping all those sites at once from your blog.  Ping.fm right now support more than 40 social network sites and there going to be adding more to that list.

You can send your messages to a mobile phone, Aim or programs similar to that.  You can send what they call status messages that is just a quick message telling people what your doing all the social sites that comes with ping fm. support status messages. 

Then you have micro blogging which is a short to the point message that is shorter than 160 characters long most of the social network sites that you join with ping fm support micro blogging. 

Last but not least is the blog and we all know what that is well I hope we all do anyway :0)).  It is just that a blog with a title and a body of text that you can also send to any of the social networking sites that you have joined.

After you have joined the program you can keep adding new networks to your list as they become available but this is a top ping service for your blogs and its free to join.  One word of caution before you start to ping your blogs. 

If you are running a self hosted blog and you have word press you will need the plugin maxblogpress ping optimizer because without it you will get blamed for spamming the social network sites.

This is because word press has major flaws in its pinging service and if you not careful you will be branded as a spammer because every update to your post that is made by you will get pinged.

With maxblogpress ping optimizer you won't get this because it will only ping when you have posted something like a new post on your blog cutting down on pinging updates that you make to your blog.
