For the past eight years I have edited a travel essay website: www.naturaltraveler.com. The site has featured some of the best travel writers and photographers anywhere, all working pro bono, in order to share their experiences in a format and style that respects their individuality. The site features literary, yet entertaining, pieces that spotlight a wide range of subjects: the vintage '50s autos of Cuba, the annual buffalo roundup in South Dakota, the splender of Zambia's Skeleton Coast, tiny atolls in Micronesia and on and on. Stunning photography accompanies these articles. Recognition of their excellence has come in prestigious journalism awards. What sets naturaltraveler.com apart is its recognition of the individuality of the creative spirit, as opposed to the structured content of an enforced middle ground that has so much of what we see and hear pitched at demographics defined by market research and polling. The human species, on the other hand, is a "natural traveler," always seeking the new and unfamiliar. To me, that sense of wonder has always defined the best in the creative arts. If you'd like to get a feel for what I mean by all this, click onto: www.naturaltraveler.com. What you'll find there is a preview issue of where we are headed going forward. The site will be relaunched after the first of the year with new features that take travel writing and photography into whole new areas. Come along for the ride.
