Broken
Open: Exposing the Visible Edge
, pastels by Debbie Wagner,
miniature
constructions by Becky Hyberger and painted gourds by Mira Mickler
Moss

Opening
Reception, Friday, April 3rd, 6 – 9 PM, Show runs through April
25th

Artist
Statement

The
exhibit "Broken Open" is a collaboration of three artists
from Kansas who have spent many years forging their creative journey.
Because their outward expressions are so diverse, this exhibit offers
a unique opportunity for the viewer to compare, contrast and
contemplate genuinely different ways of working and knowing.

Mira
Mickler Moss is a self-taught Kansas artist who uses geometrics,
symmetry and texture to create contemporary designs on gourds. She
says, "The creation of design angles and vessel openings with
different perspectives is my personal signature…I choose to work
with the translucency of dyes in order to maintain the gourd's
natural integrity."

A
Kansas native, Debbie Wagner paints the rural life around her. She
begins each day by capturing the sunrise with pastel: "I am
stimulated by the colors of the sunrise, colors I often transition
into my other works."

A
degree in psychology, an interest in dreams, and a fascination with
the creative process provide the basis for Becky Hyberger's artwork.
"Building miniature constructions is a multi-faceted process
that illuminates transformation….a tin box becomes a suitcase and a
suitcase becomes a container for thoughts, dreams and memories."

The TAC Gallery is
located at 9 East Brady in the heart of the Brady Arts District, near
the corner of Main and Brady. Contact us by phone at 918-592-0041 or

Untitled
[ArtSpace] to exhibit Kahn and Selesnick
,

Works by Artists
Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick

Continues through April 18,
2009

    An
Edwardian moonlanding, the apocalypse via an early 20th Century
iceberg run aground: these are the themes represented in the large
scale panoramic prints and props by collaborative artists Nicholas
Kahn and Richard Selesnick that will be exhibited at Untitled
[ArtSpace] early next year. Works from the two series Apollo
Prophecies and Eisbergfriestadt will be part of the exhibit.

    The
Apollo Prophecies series narrates the tale of a lost, pre-WWI lunar
expedition. The narrative is woven together with a large scale
panoramic print that illustrates the expedition from beginning to
end. Kahn and Selesnick created life size props and costumes to
illustrate the story and create a setting that trips the line between
eerily realistic and outlandishly make-believe.

    Eisbergfriestadt
is a fictional narrative loosely based on true events. In 1923 a
glacier broke away from the polar icecaps and drifted into the Baltic
port in Lubeck, Germany. As a result, many of the citizens believed
the iceberg was a sign of the apocolypse. Kahn and Selesnick have
taken this factual event and ventured into what could have been with
a what-if tale of a frozen social utopia that explores currency
inflation, global warming, and end-of-times rhetoric. Panoramic
photos as well as props from both series will be featured in the
exhibition.

    Nicholas
Kahn and Richard Selesnick, born in New York City and London,
respectively, have been collaborating since 1986. They have exhibited
internationally, and their work is included in many collections
including the Smithsonian Insititution; Addison Gallery of American
Art; Brooklyn Museum; Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; Los
Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and
Philadelphia Museum of Art. There work is also included in many
private and corporate collections.

    Untitled
[ArtSpace] is a non-profit arts organization in downtown Oklahoma
City committed to stimulating new ideas and creative thought through
contemporary art. Untitled [ArtSpace] is dedicated to providing
access to quality exhibitions, educational programs, performances,
and publications and to involving the community in collaborative
outreach efforts. This exhibition is free and open to the public. For
more information about Untitled [ArtSpace] or this exhibit, visit www.1ne3.org

Days Only - Friday & Saturday, APRIL 24th & 25th

Lovetts
Gallery brings together the original, one-of-a-kind works of ten
nationally recognized contemporary jewelry designers. These artists’
works are not offered in duplicate. They are not sold in a local
chain of jewelry stores. And they are not production line pieces
assembled by “other” jewelers. These artists’ works are unique
and more kindred to “Fine Art” then the common conception of
“jewelry.”

This
exhibition has some fairly far reaching and exciting implications.
These designers are actively evolving the jewelry market, often
intentionally, in direct opposition to the current corporate and
media jewelry standards.

– Waylon Summers, Gallery Director

Ranging
from narrative to organic, technological to pre-history, many of
these works represent themes as reflections of our times. While
nodding to the roots and traditions of gold & metalsmithing,
these artists expand and evolve into the truly Fine Arts.

The
public is invited to join Lovetts Gallery, Friday & Saturday,

this two day exhibition. There will be an invitation-only special

Artist
residencies provide dedicated time and space for creative work and
can be found in urban or rural areas, serving one or many artists at
a time. The keynote speaker of the retreat will be Caitlin Strokosch,
Director of the Alliance of Artist Communities, a national
organization providing resources for artists seeking residency
opportunities. Additionally, a panel of artists with residency
experiences will share what they’ve learned along the way. The
retreat will also provide artists with time to meet and learn from
each other and make art inspired by the beautiful surroundings of the
Wichita Mountains. A full schedule is available at

The
Cherokee Heritage Center has assembled
the largest and finest historical bead work pieces from around the
word. The exhibition features approximately 30 rare historical
southeastern beaded artifacts and 20 contemporary pieces by
southeastern bead workers. In addition, there are historic photos
along with other rare items that provide a view of Southeastern
Indian craftsmanship. Heritage Center Curator Mickel Yantz and Guest
Curator Martha Berry collaborated with private collections and
numerous museums throughout the world including the University of
Aberdeen in Scotland, Denver Art Museum, American Museum of National
History, Denver Art Museum and many more. Funding is made possible in
part by a grant from Cherokee Nation Enterprises, Robin Flint
Ballenger, chief executive officer of Flintco and generous patrons of
Cherokee arts.

Although
the show features creations from hundreds of years ago, it also
features contemporary artists. Yantz said the threads, textiles and
beads have passed down stories and history through generations. He
said he hopes the public will come away with special memories.

I
hope they see the uniqueness of Southeastern bead work from the
Plains bead work that has been represented so much in the mass media
and Hollywood,” he said. “This is one of the stereotypes we’re
trying to break.”
