I was in the studio tonight, and I heard about MJ on the way. I was shocked and overcome; it is such a huge loss for the world ~ musicians, songwriters, dancers, artists, and fans alike. I was still crying when we pulled up the tune I planned to put vocals on tonight. It's called Can't Stop the Radio, and the first verse goes like this: This is my alibi
my reason why
I do the things I do
I hear a symphony
playing just for me And every word it speaks is true
We were meant to be beautiful
Like a whisper in the dark
Is it really so unusual to feel that pounding
in your heart~

Can't stop the radio...

I don't know if I would've been able to pull it together enough to sing anything worthwhile except that suddenly, this song felt like a tribute, not just to pop music, but to the artists who make it. Michael Jackson has been an influence on me on so many levels. In his hands, pop music was an art form. His intensity and his genius were singular. His gift was that we all feel like we knew his heart.

MJ was the first artist whose music videos I remember seeing on MTV. I learned to sing background vocals jammin' to Liberian Girl and Smooth Criminal and We are the World. Only two weeks ago, I stayed up until 4 am scouring youtube for the awards show where he debuted the moonwalk. I recently rediscovered Man in the Mirror. When I remember Michael Jackson, I will remember his delivery of these words:

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
take a look at yourself and make a change

That's the symphony I keep hearing. My alibi.

Beautifully said, Sara, as only you can say it.  I mourn with you.
