Sunday, July 19, 2009
hello everyone.
we usually have something exciting to share with you when we post these things but we must announce
this with a sense of deep sorrow, confusion and mourning.
yesterday as we pulled into perform on 90.3 KEXP's audioasis we learned the heart-wrenching news.
our dear friend, mentor, colleague, one hell of an astounding human being and loving father, Tom Pfaeffle passed away yesterday and is off to his great big gig in the sky.
while vacationing with his friends in eastern washington to celebrate another year of life for a close friend tom was trying to enter what he believed was his hotel room and unknowingly began to jostle the door handle when he was suddenly shot through the hotel door.  tom fought valiantly for his life with his wife val for two more hours until the EMS arrived.
we cannot go any further into the circumstances of his death or the on-going police investigation other than to let all of you know the shooter is a 57 year old male who works as an engineer for the city of Seattle, who is in police custody on a 2nd degree murder (for tom's death) and a 1st degree assault charge (for the stray bullet that nearly struck another hotel tenant).
(recently the charge was bumped up to 1st degree murder during the defendant's arraignment, due to the severe negligence for human life.)  Police also found not onl
Tom not only embodied the best of the human spirit's ability to be a selfless and unconditionally loving person, but he was a master of his craft.  he gave countless hours and unpaid time teaching young people at the seattle art institute's live sound and recording engineering programs and his roots run deep not just in the northwest music scene but worldwide.  in just the past 24 hours at the mere mention of his name, people we don't even know overhearing the news have broken down and relayed their very personal experiences with Tom.  he touched so many people and always felt as though he wasn't doing enough and wanted to push to improve things and be better at anything he put his mind to.
Tom fronted the money for the 'Kay Kay Live From the Pretty Parlor' DVD to be pressed as well as engineered the live recording and there is absolutely 0% cliche when we say we wouldn't be here without him.  Tom's mixing and mastering on our s/t full length was the reason the record got the acclaim it did.  the world is a lesser place without tom.  we truly lost a hero in every sense of the word.

Tom's hands were heavily involved with the following artists on either their records or live shows and on tour.

bb king
gatsbys american dream
nirvana
ub40
kay kay and his weathered underground
the black crowes
daphne loves derby

iron maiden
kay kay and his weathered underground
alice cooper
heavy heavy low low
the wild orchid children
heart

marrakesh
lizzie huffman

paul rodgers
the hollowpoints

we are all still trying to make sense of such a senseless thing.  Tom leaves behind a beautiful family two of which won't fully understand why their daddy didn't come back from stepping outside for a brief moment.  please keep Tom in your thoughts prayers emails and stories.  each beautiful memory of Tom brings us to our knees, teaching his kids how to defrost the thanksgiving turkey with a hair dryer or teaching all of us how to make an aioli sauce and the proper way to bread oysters with cajun spices.  you left such a beautiful legacy hammer, we love you, you are with us always.

lastly, we don't use the fact that we're musicians to push any sort of agenda.  there is no soap box here, but we feel too complelled at this moment in time to not mention anything.
we live in a country who proclaims more than any other country in the world, the benefits of freedom, librety and the pursuit of happiness.  tom fully embraced those ideas and at the time of his death was doing something so distinctly american.  packing up into his american made car to cruise on the american interstate to go vacationing in america's beautiful terrain.  the idea that his only fault was mistaking his hotel room for another, something i personally did three or four times while on tour in the past few weeks, sickens me.  who is anyone to say life isn't fair, but the reality of the situation is Tom would be holding his wife and children if someone who clearly had paranoia issues hadn't been allowed to own a killing device.  (The defendant was wearing two 40. glock 90's and also had a semi-automatic assault rifle in his hotel room to apparently shoot coyotes.)
even more disheartening is knowing whole-heartedly that there is no falsehood in saying that if this was a different country this wouldn't have happened.  firearms and concealed weapons are illegal in all other industrialized countries and in the best country on the planet 80 gun deaths happen every day.  Tom Pfaeffle shouldn't be another fucking stupid statistic in those findings.

here are some links for more info or to help in anyway, please visit gunstories.org if you knew Tom in order to share your stories with him or your views on guns.

thanks again for everyone's support through the good and the bad.
we are already planning some benefit shows very soon in order to benefit Tom's family and gun control advocacy groups and will let everyone know about that information as soon as it's available.

performing 4 songs yesterday on the radio that tom mixed and mastered was the best way for us to say farewell to our dear brother.  i know he was sitting in that live room smiling at all of us telling us it was going to be ok.
thank you tom pfaeffle for giving your life in such a way that you'll never be forgotten.  we love you so much.

I had portfolio class with Tom this quarter. One week in and this happens. He is truly going to be missed. Such an awesome and enlightening human being. I won't ever forget everything he has shown me on my own journey. I hope you guys are doing alright coping with this loss. It's somehow a little cathartic to see how many people loved this man, and what kind of impact he has had on the community. I'll miss him a whole lot.

It's so hard to believe he's gone--it's all I can think about.  I was in his portfolio class this quarter, too, stayed after to talk about gear....he was brilliant and passionate and generous and honest, and I can't imagine what school will be like without him.  In a recent conversation he told me that the Kay Kay record was the best thing he'd ever done, and that he was so proud to have worked on it. He will be missed dearly.

Tom Pfaeffel
As a young musician and dream seeker, I'm proud and forever grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and know such a profoundly talented and kind man, Mr. Tom Pfaeffel.  I was honored to have Tom offer his talents to me with The Brother Band EP and has been an invaluable and unforgettable member of the Seattle music scene's tightly knit family, as well as a man close to ours.  The news of Tom's murder comes as a shock to us all.  His work has often moved me to tears and such a tragic loss will bring this family closer and remind us of how precious and valuable each participant in the greater good really is.  The Huffman family graciously extends our thoughts and prayers to the Pfaeffel family and all of the friends that made our hours, days, nights, and weeks at The Tank studio, and all of our time in the aura of someone so special, deeply memorable.  I will not forget one moment I spent in the presence of Tom's unique and genuine spirit.  I cannot possibly be thankful enough.  We love you, Tom.

From Seattle to your big palace in the sky,
Lizzie Huffman and Friends

I remember one night when we were at the Tank tracking drums for the always open mouth everyone in my band were jerks and took all the sleeping space upstairs (jk). So I had to sleep on the futon in the main tracking room. I laid there for a few hours and listened to Bobby, Casey, and Tom in the control room totally drunk on Mac n Jacks, talking about how much they loved each other and were going to take over the world together. Tom's passion for all of this created a legacy in the people like Bobby Darling and Casey Bates, which then affected myself and all of my fellow bandmates in ways I never thought possible. I am very grateful for everything I have been able to do musically, and am happy to have been able to have worked with Tom and been directly impacted by him as well as the impact of all the people who have been mentored by him that I call my friends and family.

Thank you for honoring Tom this way.  He was a very close friend of my family.  Tom, Val, Athena & Wolf just spent 4th of July weekend at our beach place.  It was a great time.  I never thought it would be the last time I would see him, laugh with him, give him a hug, or hear his voice.  He was like another big brother to me.   My heart breaks for his family and friends.  Your kind words about Tom are so appreciated.  Saw your footage on the news as well and it's clear that like so many of us, you loved him too.

I have known Tom in many capacites for probably 30 years or more.  In that time we have had several different relationships/  At one point I was an LD to his front of house guy, another period, I was his road case supplier, and later on, we were just friends.  I can't say any of them were more enjoyable than another, but what I can tell  you is that he was a kind, caring, professional, and most importantly honest person.

Though we hadn't seen each other for a while, when we crossed paths a few months ago, it was like it was yesterday.  Some people will give you lip service if you haven't hooked up for awhile, but Tom was so cool, we talked about what he was doing, and what I was doing, and you could see that he genuinely cared! As it so happened, I had just returned to Seattle that night from the funeral of another Seattle legend and friend, and I was feeling a bit low.  About 5 years ago, I decided I was done behind the scenes, and decided to try my hand at singing. When I told Tom this, with no hesitancy he replied, "well we need to get you out to the Tank and lay down some tracks. That would be a hoot"  As with many other areas of my  life, I put it off, and now regret it with all my heart.  Yeah, it would have been a hoot, Tom, I'm sorry I missed it.

Got a tough one here.  We were supposed to go down sunday morning to finish up our recording.  We were just going to do a few last things like song order, space between songs and mastering.  I talked to Tom thursday evening and he emailed us song files to listen to until sunday.  3 of the 4 of us in our group were just about ready to go down there when our bass player called us with the news.  It was and still is very surreal.  I worked with Tom first in 1996 and had several landmarks with him.  I was the last drummer to track drums in his living room before he tore his gear down in the garage.  We were the first or of the first projects he started up The Tank with as we continued tracking.  Most regretably, we are the last or one of the last projects he worked on before he went to heaven. I remember him showing us the progress of his dream that became The Tank.  The inside was still a skeleton but he was very excited.  Over the years I have probably used one word to describe him more than any other, and that word is patient.  He was always so patient in working out arrangements or trying to get an idea across.  He was always so patient with his little ones.  I never heard him raise his voice to them.  There are so many positive words to say about him it would fill a novel.  We loved Tom and thought of him as a good friend.  He was such a rare person.  He has done so many great things for so many people but it never went to his head.  He never treated anyone like they were less of a person.  Tom's extended family is enormous and we all feel the pain of losing him.  We need to honor him by remembering him and letting him continue inspire us.  Create and live life to the fullest.
