Classes are wrapping up this week right before celebrations for the Fourth of July bwgin.  I really enjoyed my first class as a CCT student and am increasingly looking forward to the fall... although at the same time i don't want the summer to end! Although my class (New Media and Political Dissent) is over I still have my final paper to work on.  We've turned in 3 smaller papers already and for this final one are to connect them together and expand upon what we've been doing. 

 The focus of the paper is an individual or group of dissenters and their use of new media.  I chose to work on an annonymous street artist from the UK named Banksy.  I've specifically been studying how his graffiti challanges the power of both consumer culture and governmet authority.  Its interesting to see how he plays with familiar images and phrases, altering advertisments and street signs, to protest.  I am most fascinated by his the irony of his dissent: he protests western culture and society by playing with the very signs and language that legitimize and support it.  Interesting stuff.  

Everyone's projects are fascinating and have me looking forward to meeting more students and being exposed to even more ways of thinking and seeing the world around us.
