June 6th, 14.00: Where was I? lurching through the streets of Bielefeld on a carnival float in drenching rain, with a fish up my nose. Tom P was fighting seasickness at the back, striving to stay his drum stool in the heavy swell; Tom P and Dazzler grinned manically either side of me; a crowd of bemused locals stumbled after us in Hamelin fashion, whilst thousands more lined the streets. The impromptu ten minute You Are My Sunshine / We're Comin' Back medley, with three key changes, seemed to satisfy them. The people on the samba carnival float behind us didn't seem too amused though - I presume that's why they overtook us, in a sort of low speed 'police, samba, action' manoeuvre. Good dancing. Nice outfits. Big personality. They had it all.
I hadn't previously had the pleasure of hearing Die Toten Hosen's Eisgekuhlter Bommerlunder (for some reason, this laptop won't let my type umlauts - apologies). After initial skepticism, I gradually realised the genius of the work: two sandwiches - one with egg, one with ham. What could go wrong? After ten minutes of playing it incessantly whilst bumping around the Bielefeld streetscape, the temp ever faster and the pitch ever higher, it is now etched on my soul. SCHINKEN!
The aftershow party was very pleasant indeed, aided by impressive amounts of beer and the largest pizzas I have ever seen. Thanks very much to all the kind people at Kulturgruppe, who were brave enough to book two English bands to play on their Douglas Adams inspired carnival float, and were delightful company all day. Thanks also to Piti and his wife for their hospitality, and Mike for the singing.
SCHINKEN!

P.S. Apolgies to the Bolivan cultural group at the carnival: I swear the flag looked Argentinian from where I was standing.
