Top Tech News Article About GoogleEETimes Article About GoogleThose two links are from different websites, but about the same story by
Privacy International. Anyway, I will give you a brief synopsis of the situation:
Recently, Privacy International ranked all of the "big guns" of the web including EBay, Google, Wikipedia, etc. While none of the websites ranked in the "green" (Privacy-friendly and privacy enhancing), a few came close (Wikipedia recieved the blue "Generally privacy-aware but in need of improvement). Google, on the other hand, is the only one that was ranked black (Comprehensive consumer surveillance and entrenched hostility to privacy).
I must say it is pretty scary that the leading search engine is considered "hostile to privacy." Everything is Googled. If you need information, or are conducting research, you will usually end up on Google. Google is basically synonymous with search engines at this point.
This is...craziness, frankly! If this isn't a cue to start protecting your privacy, then I don't know what is! None of these companies are in the "blue" rankings. That means while they attempt to protect your privacy, in some cases, they actually do not. You need to take Internet privacy and security into your own hands.
