Saturday morning at Sunrise was a morning
with no sunrise... so when it pours in Tejas Buckaroos, it really gets with the
program, my Golf adventure with Michael Somma who is about a 5 at the most
handicap is on hold as it’s coming down in buckets! Saturday down in Texas even though it’s the Live Music
Capital of the world, dat why I call it da Mecca, is a Football thang…not for
all but for the most part, it’s the Blood of the State and here in Austin, the
Horns rule so I change our groove to heading in to the Texas Music Museum to
see what all they had. Should have called as the doors where closed, locked up
on a Saturday afternoon while I’m feeling like a Duck, it’s pouring out
here…let us in! Nope, not today,
for whatever reason, closed on Saturday…sheeeeeeeet!
OK, I tell Michael it’s after High
Noon and enough of this being a Duck, Time for a Cold one at the Saxon Pub, 1320 S Lamar
512.448.2552 which at 3pm they start with Live Music. As we glide through downtown, burnt orange is everywhere and
6th street is alive with all the venues at party stage as the
Longhorn game is coming on the tube and it’s pouring rain like a Monsoon. The
Saxon is no different but with a different crowd, a little more mature so to
speak but still the Horns where on the tube…We’re not there 30min and the power
goes off.R U kiddin me…some days your just the bug on the windshield, this was
not looking good but I’m trying this new Zen thang and all will be cool
As we let the cold ones slide down and enjoy
the game I see a Band settin up I hadn’t’ seen here before so I tell Michael,
lets go get a better seat, one close to the Mojo.
I’m one to just chill and watch Artists Set
up, I can get a fill for what’s to come in most cases and I notice that theirs
a cat with a baritone guitar, hadn’t seen this in sometime…turns out to be Will
Dunlop who makes it sound like it should…Bass and Guitar then on the Cajon and
Congas is Jorge de Armas who keeps a steady full sound which makes one think of
the Islands and then on the lead Vocals, piano, flute and harp is Time Curry,
The Tim Curry Trio is center stage!
This group of musicians brought something
different to The Saxon pub, more of a Rhythm and Blues Groovc, Tim has such a
powerful voice with a deep Soulful edge and lays down some fine phrasing with
the keys, flute and a Stevie Wonder style of Harp…These cats picked up the
Saturday afternoon groove as we were making plans for later that evening which
was going to be a problem as so many Acts to catch but only a giving amount of
time…I really want to catch The Time Curry Trio, www.myspace.com/timcurrytrio
Again as it had a real cool vibe and I like
that!
The Rain has turned into a steady drizzle as
head next door to the Saxon and find Austin Music which has some Very cool
Guitars and Amps for the Beginner or the Pro…I think I’m going to get me one of
these 335’s soon, just like the tone and if it was good enough for Freddie, it
be good enough for JaBeaux, I just need to learn how it works!!
While there I over heard this gal talking
about Alan Haynes playing over at The Evangeline Café tonight…R U kiddin me I
ask and of course she smiled and started to say, why would I do that when you
could be my favorite Turd and I put my finger to her lips and said, oh
Darlin’…Not me!
I told Michael we would be having Cajun
again tonight as we couldn’t miss this event…Michael not knowing of Alan asked,
R U sure? The look in my eyes was
enough and in the car and heading to The Best little Cajun eatery in town, The
Evangeline Café at 8106 Brodie Lane, 512.282.2586 has the goods just like my
Grandmother use to cook, well, close and that works for me as they always have
great Music and tonight, one of the Best in the World when it comes to the
Blues…Alan Haynes from Houston who now lives in Austin is only a few feet from
anyone at the gig. This is going to be fantastic! When we get there, it’s packed once again and set outside
having a Cold one watching the Rain, reminds me of a Street car named Desire!
And then, you just never know who’s going to walk up do
you…Matt Smith of the Monstas…Damn good to see you and tell him of me moving
back to Colorado. He tells of his moving back and putting in å Studio and all
the work he’s got just within the last 5 days…and then tells us about his tour
of Germany soon. Matt is such a Genius when it comes to anything with Strings.
He’s already doing workshops for anyone who has that itch to learn. He then
whips out these cool slides he’s making, out comes the players, everyone wants
to try them, Michael is first, then the drummer for Alan, then Alan and so
on…Molly comes out and says our table is ready and in I go and watch these cats
play slide on Matts 1935 Dobro.
After eating some Great Food, the show
starts with Alan just smoothly sliding into the blue, the Drummer and Bass are
just shadows of eachother and Alan plays and communicates with the audience
with a Soul to Soul Groove. He played a few hits from Wishing Well and just a
few Jimi tunes which most Artists want even touch but, what command of his
Groove…it was like he was giving his soul to all of us to feel, to enjoy the
juice within…Alan Haynes www.myspace.com/alanhaynes
Is one of the Top Blues Artist today that
gives that Real Texas Groove, Ooooooh what a evening of Blues and Michael being
a Bad Ass player his self, this was a Trip into the Mecca that was rewarding
two fold!
The mist with the lights of the City made
the drive west on 71 such a cool trip as I felt blessed for once since I’ve
been here, this is the Mecca of Live Music and good people with Great Food…I
will miss it but the Boogie Calls.
