What is your favorite sno-cone flavor?

It’s a simple question, really. Until you really start thinking about it, at which point it has the potential to become a real head-scratcher. For instance, when I was growing up, the choice was pretty simple – red. It didn’t matter so much whether “red” meant strawberry, cherry, tiger’s blood (a flavor which brings to the surface so many questions that I cant possibly begin to go into them here), or tutti frutti (again, too many questions…). So long as it was red and stained my teeth I was a happy camper. I would even go so far as to mix them, the “reds,” because ultimately, they always just tasted the same by the time you got to the bottom.

I had a friend who swore up and down about the power of “Blue Bubble Gum,” but I could never bring myself to do it. For one thing, I was leery of anything with a gum flavor that didn’t have a gum texture (I learned this the hard way when a friend of mine [different friend] let me try his Hubba Bubba Soda, a snack he had every day after school along with a bag of Funyuns [[sub question – have you ever tried to chew a liquid?]]), and I suspected that the only true reason he always ordered the “Blue Bubble Gum” was that he had discovered that the day after eating the cone his, ahem, bathroom leavings would be colored blue, a fact that brought him great joy. But then again I suspect that every 8-year-old boy is infatuated by bathroom humor, so the flavor is still up for debate. Needless to say, it scared me.

Anyhow, I grew older as did my palette. I grew to enjoy other types of sno-cones (your Pina Coladas, your Silver Fox’s, your lime–infused varieties…). But I never mixed colors… it just wasn’t right. And I always stayed away from “Blue.”

As of a couple of days ago, it’s officially HOT in Texas. Whenever it gets HOT, a little trailer appears down the road from my house, painted a bright yellow, and with a sign spelling out the name of stand, “Penguin Pete’s Sno-Cones.” The sign also claims that its wares are in the “authentic New Orleans” style, but I don’t know what that means. So I stopped by today, and I almost fell into my old habits of ordering something “red,” but at the last minute decided against it. Instead, I went for something I never would have done as a kid, which was “Rainbow.” I don’t know, I just saw it, and without thinking I pulled the trigger. And you know what? It was awesome, even though it had “Green” AND “Blue” flavors.

Probably because by the time I got the bottom, it all ended up tasting like “red” anyways, proving that I knew the game even as a little kid. We’ll see what happens with that “Blue”, though… (Note – there WILL NOT be an update.)

But the whole thing left me wondering, now that summer is here…

What is you favorite flavor of sno-cone?

Definitely red. Yes, I totally agree with your childhood self- whatever the flavor, red's the best!

Egg Custard with marshmellow is number 1..but we are talking about Baltimore Snowballs and not snow cones. #2 Spearmint with marshmellow and #3 it was called Blueboy...it was bright blue and I cannot till this day describe it...nothing tastes like blueboy..but it was fabulous and would bring back such memories if I could find the true blueboy flavor

Grape!! Or as the stand around here calls it, "Grape-a-Licious!". Yes, with the exclamation. It's awesome though, because they put the best vanilla icecream at the bottom. Man, now i'm craving a sno-cone and its 9 p.m. , what to do, what to do?

this is the best blog I have read, well maybe ever!! I LOVE snowcones! my favorite is cotton candy, which can be blue or pink.. at my favorite stand it's blue (no bathroom info will be provided) One of the only good memories of my stepdad is that he would always get us a snowcone, and he would combine 2 flavors, and then I would try and guess what they were. Sometimes a good thing, sometimes not so much... I have to say though, I don't know what a silver fox is.. maybe i'll investigate! no rainbow for me though, especially if it includes grape! thanks for the great blog topic!

I think my favorite flavor is a mix of pink lemonade and strawberry daquiri. Get that nice lemon-y flavor and the awesome flavor of strawberry, plus they're both shades of red.

Enjoy you summer and your sno-cones

Coconut and cotton candy mixture is #1 for me. It mst be the finely shaved ice, not the crunchy kind. Oh, and my 10 year old nephew confirms the "blue" theory. Interesting.

1st one to comment!!! YAY! I like the blue rasberry because it's sour. But I also like cherry. So I mix them both together! I have to say that my favorite is grape though. Have you had the sno-cones with bubble gum on the bottom? The best! 'cause they don't drip and you get free gum!!!

I'm more of a Hawaiian shaved ice man myself, but I haven't had one in so long, I couldn't tell you my favorite flavor...something different, something "exotic."

My favorite is called "Frog In a Blender" which is green apple on the outside and tutti-frutti in the middle. They make them at a place here called Hawaiian Ice. It is a wonderful summer treat when it gets hot out!!! :)

At my college, we sometimes have special sno-cone days in our caf. My thing is not about the flavors, it's about the timing. During the winter they would have the sno-cones, and during spring and summer, they are absent. So my question is, is it unethical to eat a sno-cone in the dead cold of winter? Something about it just doesn't seem right, but I cannot help myself. When a sno-cone is around, I have to get one. Maybe as it is now warm and summer, I will have more opportunities to eat sno-cones and not feel bad about it.

i dunno about this blue bubble gum nonsense, and i'd love to visit some of these places that have wedding cake flavored snow cones, but for me it was blue raspberry or lime...or both, lol...blue and green for me...red somehow got equated with cough syrup which makes me yak, so...yeah...

can't wait for the new album-y'all rock my socks off!

When I lived in Gainesville Florida (Go Gators!) There was a Shaved Ice Van called Gator Ice. They had to have had at least 20 flavors (including the Blue and Orange). Watermelon (Does Deep Pink Count as a Red?) was my Absolute Favorite. But the Suicide (Kind of Like a Rainbow Only the Flavors weren't Seperated) was always a Double Dare Satisfying Option as Well.

I personally like red (cherry flavor) sno cones. Don't recall if I ever mixed or had rainbow as it has been a while since I ate one.

But, I have an uncle that lives in Texas, my sister just moved there, I have been thinking on moving there myself... might be an excuse to try the various flavors :) . My kids certianly will go for it for sure.

I think it has to do with being a daddy. Your whole life has changed! You looked so proud Sunday morning! I cried during "Glory of it All". Your violin just has that effect on me. Don't change that part! Loved the whole set you all did. It was great for our last Sunday. Our daughter has been a part of your church since she was a freshman. She graduated Sat and has already moved to Austin. I asked her if she had decided where to go to church Sun, she said maybe ubc! Thanks, for the "grown-up" sno-cone dilema! It made me think to when red was about the only color there was to choose!

I love that there are universal sno-cone flavors. I thought Tiger's Blood and Silver Fox were signatures of my "Famous New Orleans Sno-Ball Stand" in Louisiana.

My favorite currently is half lime- half pink lemonade. It rocks.
