Summer thunder is already a distant memory. The air
has gone cool and clear, and the high sky arcs jewel-blue and
cloud-free above us. The maples have begun their blushing, and we are
waiting patiently for local apples to come in. Almost fall in New
England.
I am spending my days on the floor of my office,
sorting contracts, promotional materials, notes, articles, and other
memorabilia from a performing life that now spans 13 years. I am
running the gamut of emotions with this, as you can well imagine, and I
don't even know what I'll do with all of this once I have it organized.
I'm going on faith that this trip I'm on will make sense sometime soon.
It's not making sense now -- I can tell you that for sure -- but it's
interesting. And if nothing else, I see how lucky I have been to have
made a career doing what I love the most, in places I never thought I'd
see, for people I'm so happy to have met along the way. Thank you for
being part of the journey.
For the next year or so, shows will be fewer and
farther between as I make room in my schedule to finish up with these
archives. I hope you'll make it out to whatever concerts come within
striking distance of you ... It is always a pleasure to laugh and sing
together, isn't it?
Fall blessings on us all ~

First east coast Writer's Round-up a success. Fans and friends came together to celebrate the music of Dave Carter in the first-ever east coast Writer's Round-up, held at Club Passim in Cambridge, Mass. on August 16. Not only did our featured artists, Gretchen Peters and Richard Shindell,
wow the audience with hilarious and heartfelt performances, but four
intrepid audience members, aka "tweeners," took the stage to play their
renditions of Dave Carter songs. The event raised almost $700 for the Passim School of Music, and we look forward to seeing if we can double that when we do it all again in 2010. Mark your calendars for August 15 and start practicing your DC songs now so that you can be a part of next year's fun!
Playing well with others. Here's a plug for two new releases that I am proud to have been involved with recently. As
it turns out, both artists are activists, and both use their
clear-eyed, often outspoken, always compassionate songs to work for
peace -- world peace, and the peace within. On Rod MacDonald's new CD, "After the War," you'll find me singing a harmony on a crowd favorite, "American Jerusalem." Jim Henry and I both contributed to Janet Bates' glorious new release, "The Little Spinner,"
which was produced by Ben Wisch and takes its title from a Lewis Hine
photo of an anemic 12-year old girl at work in a Vermont cotton mill.
The album includes Janet's lovely cover of Dave Carter's sea turtle song, "Celia Says."
