So Lily Allen has apparently launched a campaign against file sharers in response to the Featured Artist Coalition's view that file sharers should not be punished.
In my opinion file sharing should be free and legal. Most people do a day's work for a day's pay. They want another day's pay they do another day's work. Some musicians however feel justified in claiming a day's pay for every day of their lives for each single day they work. What planet are these people living on?
I've been a working musician for my entire adult life and regardless of whether you feel my music is pleasant, creative or valid, I think if anyone wants to listen to anything I have done at any time in my life I am deeply flattered. Most of my income really has been from performing live which these days I am not well enough to do though I do miss the buzz of being on stage.
Obviously if someone uses my work to make money for themselves I want my cut. That is only right and proper. As for expecting royalties from people listening to recordings of me in the comfort of their own homes, that is ridiculous.
Lily Allen, Gary Barlow and James Blunt should get real. Their attitude of wanting to punish their own audiences is arrogant beyond belief and can only damage the music business.
Of course, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the doctors and nurses who saved my life when I collapsed in the South of France back in the 80s are due a payment for every day that I have continued to draw breath. I doubt they want payment so why should musicians (who don't really contribute anything of serious value to society) want paying for life?
