We’ve had similar post but please dispense some more advice :) to the member below:

"I had a look through your photography questions and wasn’t able to find an exact answer to my question. Although I may be blind so if its there already I do apologise.

Basically I want to purchase a new lens and am quite confused by all the ones out there. I own a canon 40D with the kit lens and also the canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. I’ve been happy with both but am after another lens, maybe more of an all purpose lens. I would just love to hear some suggestions from people and some feedback on the lenses that they use. Thanks.

I'm not a cannon user but I would suggest looking for a 24-80mm zoom lens. It's a fairly versatile focal length range, covers from wide to portrait and is fairly common. Just look for something fast.

the canon 17-85mm that they make to fit the D series bodies is great. it would replace you 18-55 with wider range, better glass, and an image stabilizer to boot. i'm a huge fan of fixed lenses, but i really like this guy on my 40D. i am not, however, impressed by the aperture.

if you want a FANTASTIC LENS WITH THE 40D GO WITH THE 24-105L SERIES LENS, IT IS PRICEY, BUT WILL TAKE YOU INTO PROFESSIONAL STATUS AND A GREAT RANGE!!!!!
