Just One-
I wrote it in early October of 2001. Made a recording of it in 2002 (On the Cd As You Make Your Way) . It was a composite of  images, experiences and stories in the weeks after Sept 11th. It came almost fully formed from somewhere else.
I wrote it down in my bedroom somewhere after 3am. It took about 10 minutes. It was probably an attempt to clarify and deal. I 've always thought it was hopeful.
I have played it at memorial services and gatherings, funerals and dedications, barrooms, hotels rooms and livingrooms for Union Iron and Steel workers, War vets, fireman, governors, widows, grieving cousins, priest, rabbis, mayors, sons and daughters, Democrats and Republicans, citizens one and all. I hope that you will download it and share it. I hope it makes you feel something.

That was an unbelievable time for all... You, as always, you beautifully and uniquely captured the incredible rush of fear, frustration, unity and hope.

It will act as a perfect scrapbook picture of a time that will be so difficult for us to describe to our children and grand children. In the face of such terror and horror, there was much beauty and grace.

This has always been one of my favorite tracks off of AYMYW, along with Untethered. We've all got our own memories of that horrible day... for me, it was being in PA, Cynthia was still living in NJ and working in Chelsea. The burning uncertainty, the pain and frustration of not being able to get ahold of her, not knowing if she was all right, comes back all too clearly sometimes. I had been in Jersey City that weekend, and I remember being on the Casciano bridge heading in that Friday night, cursing the stalled traffic but drinking in the view of the city and the beauty of the evening... never realizing two days later that skyline would never be the same again.

Thanks for sharing this again, Marc.

Just One...it aches with beauty and sadness...with images not dulled by the years...with tears still wept and felt in the heart...it is more than a fitting tribute to all who perished and all who labored and all who live on...bravo marc douglas berardo for your mastery of words and music...and God Bless Us, Everyone!...

You know, Take It Along is a really fine song to listen to AFTER Just One, in my humble opinion.

BTW, I was part of a great show this weekend with Jud, Terence Martin and Eve Goldberg -- wish you could have been there. It was a damn fine evening.
