Check out this video. It's what happened on the Mall last night. In the countless times I've been to this particular spot, I never imagined I'd see this sort of scene. It doesn't compare to the magic of the July 4th fireworks display. It doesn't compare to the silliness of the time I cavorted around the oval office and the press room with my family on a private tour [we passed Al Gore, then VP, in the hall and my mom almost fainted like a teenager - embarrassing!]. It doesn't compare to the bajillion rides I've taken on the enchanting carousel out there, or the day Greenway took a field trip, or ice skating at the sculpture garden. It just doesn't compare. Growing up in DC, in Virginia, in America, there's all of a sudden so much pride. The crowds are the same though, whether they are in this video, at the campaign office, or on the street corner, waving and jumping and dancing in a hailstorm like so many folks here in Seattle were last night. Hail the size of peas, no joke.
Change has come to America, indeed.
And so I might retire those songs about the ships that sank to the bottom of the ocean. They might not make sense anymore. For now, I'll do what I can to sing of hope and the future and of course all the mountains, rivers, and valleys that make America so beautiful. Gosh I can't wait.
