Lady Vengeance  (2005)

5 out of 5 skulls

Originally titled "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance" and sporting one of the coolest tag lines I've seen in a while ("Coming for you soon!") this spectacular film is Chan-wook Park's final installment of his revenge trilogy...and what a way to close it!

In a very non-linear fashion we're told the story of Geum-ja who, at the tender age of 19, went to prison after confessing to a heinous crime she didn't commit.  As a pregnant teen she had turned to a trusted adult who led her down one hell of a wrong path, then forced her to take the blame in the kidnap/murder of a little boy--by kidnapping and threatening her own baby daughter.  While in prison Geum-ja's kind ways and angelic demeanor wins her many friends--and more importantly a network of devoted helpers.  After 13 years of plotting revenge she's finally released, and thanks to her friends knows exactly where to find her prey.  Just when it seems her moment is at hand, Geum-ja makes a horrifying discovery that makes her realize how many others deserves to taste the same sweet revenge she craves.  In prison she had been known as "kind-hearted Geum-ja", after all, so our heroine grimly gathers these people together then sets about teaching one evil man that payback is a bitch in blood-red eyeshadow!

I can't even begin to praise this amazing film enough--and I hate the overused word "amazing" so that should tell you something because this time it truly fits.  Playing to my own firmly-held beliefs on what should be done with child-killers didn't hurt my opinion of the movie for sure, but that's really only the icing on the cake.  Starting with the performances, Yeong-ae Lee was perfection as the angel of vengeance, Geum-ja; bringing layers to the character that allowed her to be sweet, aloof, motherly or psychotic at the drop of a hat.  Min-sik Choi (Oldboy) was utterly believable and even dignified as the despicable Mr. Baek, the object of her fury.  The scene where Geum-ja is forcing him at gunpoint to translate her feelings to her English-speaking long-lost daughter is incredibly moving, due in large part to Choi's performance.  In fact, everyone in the large cast was outstanding and memorable; kudos to all!

The film itself is an elegant work of art with beautiful visuals and cinematography as well as stylish camera work, stunning direction and a lively classical-based soundtrack.  With its themes of sin, retribution and redemption the story is serious yet brimming with wry dark humor.  Though not a horror movie, there's at least a good bucketful of gore and some very disturbing (and heartbreaking) scenes of small children in peril, so be warned about that.  Ultimately, this magnificent gem from Korea is well worth your time and should be owned—after all, it owned me.

Highly Recommended!
