The planning stage for the 2009 walk should start sometime this summer, so I'd like to give everyone a couple months to give me their opinions on some things.  Please answer in the blog so that others can build on your comments.

1. First, I'd like to address the issue of having a route vs. "winging it."  Before you tell me what you think, this is my issue:  I have tried both.  In my experience, there are too many people for me to stay in the front, and lead everyone around. I realized this after the first walk, so during the second walk, I told everyone where to go before we started.  It was a straight shot, and people still decided to go off track, and half the group followed.  During the last walk (World Zombie Day), I allowed everyone to wing it. What I liked about this method was that a few group leaders can pick some hot spots, and it's easier for people to leave when they feel like they've done enough.  My issue with this method, however, is that it can be slightly unorganized and people get confused.  I guess the real question is, how organized should a zombie walk be in the first place?  Which method do you prefer?

2. What does everyone think about collecting for a charity?  For those of you who did not attend the October walk, we collected several hundred pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank. I realize the sign-in sheet was a bit of a hassle, and I have yet to decide whether or not we'll be attempting another record breaker specifically for that reason, but I feel like the charity gave a little more sense of purpose, besides just having fun.

3. For this fall, I am considering a theme zombie walk.  My idea is an 80s zombie walk (i.e. Return of the Living Dead).  How do you feel about having a theme?  Or do you have any theme ideas that you like better?  Ideally, I would like to stick with something that is broad enough that people won't feel excluded.

Thanks for your input!

"coming on back"...

Hey Holly, i atteded the "World Zombie Day" walk and agree that i like the way it worked out by winging it. I say maybe for the next walk may split groups of three or four taking different paths and meeting back up at a certain points. Just an idea. As for the cherity i thought it was great and with the amount of people that showed last walk i see no reasons of why we shouldnt do it again. Its extremly simple to bring one or two cans from the pantry to help those in need. Im toataly down for the 80's theme, love it. Im breakin out the "Thriller".

i think if we were to get not only zombies but victims. then you could set up attacks, like the police officer in may. collecting for charity is the only way to go.

ok, so i was at the first walk...big guy...hell was full sign....yeah.....

so i think "free ballin it" (sooo what it should be called lol) was awesome....cops showed up...does it get any better?"

a theme actually would be kinda cool....i would so have to do a flock of seagulls zombie.....we'd totally need a cindi lauper one too....

zombie walks shouldnt have a route....

charity is a good idea.....and the walks tend to attract homeless people....so we should help them!!!!

Hi...haven't done a walk yet, but I think winging it is good, collecting cans for 2nd Harvest is good, but I personally don't want to be restricted to an 80s zombie - no themes.
:)

1.
I guess winging it sounds better because people do what they want anyways

2.
charities are always good

3.
a theme seems odd to me

1. I walked during the routed zombie walk. People went back because the walking distance was way too far and about half the walk wasn't really downtown. Also, a lot of people didn't know where it ended and we had to walk all the way back to the beginning which was a real hassle. I think winging it might be better. Zombies don't really have a route they follow.

2. I wasn't there for this but it sounds like a good idea to me.

3. As long as there are zombies involved I'm good.

As far as having a plan goes, I think most people have attempted to follow the intended route, but they don't know who to follow, and the group is too large to avoid getting split up at busy intersections. I think the best way to go would be to lay out a very simple, specific route, and put it on the back of the flyer. That way, people know where to go regardless of whether they can keep up. And if people are going to split up into squads, they'll do so anyway, but at least there will be a path carved out. Maybe even have a couple of routes to choose from just to make the numbers manageable.

Charity = win. It's good for everybody, and it gives our detractors a reason to shut up.

I wouldn't worry so much about having a theme as I would about getting everyone who walks with us to dress up in the first place. Nothing ruins the effect more than having some a-holes who didn't really dress-up walking along with us, giggling and talking on their cell phones.
Perhaps the theme should be: "Must be at least this dead to walk among us.
"

I vote we borrow a page from GWAR: We take all the walkers that don't look zombified enough and just hose them down with blood on the spot.

i think a theme keeps things fresh, a route would help keep things more organized, and charity is always good! i think that setting up victims would be awesome, so i agree with thorbjorn on this!

I've been to 2 walks, tried both methods. I don't think a planned route is the way to go. Zombies do not plan, just feed. However I like Thorbjorn 's idea of setting up attacks, some attempted attacks with random passerby in the past just did not fly with them to the point where is just became really awkward. Obviously messing with people is tons of fun, but having set victims would be rad. Also, donating to charity gave another sense of purpose to NZW, if that many people are getting dressed up to have fun it would be ludicrous not to ask them to donate something easy, it's just that much more food for 2nd Harvest. Regarding the theme, I'm down. It should be broad enough as stated so that people can have that creative freedom. I quite enjoyed seeing Hunter S Thompson zombies, Jesus, Shaun of the Dead, etc.
When's the walk this year?

good morning my sweet vision of morbid disorder

errything is errything

it'll turn out fine either way

we must have charity and people need to donate good shit too not just some 5yr old peas and yams and shit. Maybe we should donate clothes and/or shoes too cause u know we be dressin fine. We can give up some of that old played out shit. imagine some young impoverished chillen wearing your old black flag or marley shirt, that'd be mad rad.

The only thing i didnt like is the dude at the first one getting everyone chanting Hail Satan. Man fuck that retard and if your reading this Fuck You Retard!!! Shit wasnt cool and all the people who repeated it, validating his lame attempt to be cool are also mildly retarted! and i dont mean to offend anyone who is actually mentally handicapped cause I'm sure they're not that slow.

as far as a planned route people arent going to adhere to it, well unless the directions contain a reference to satan apparently, then some will

...

"fuck you we wont do what you tell us"

My issue with clothing donation is that most people will bring their old, worn, out-of-date clothing, rather than something that's in relatively good condition. I may look into a charity that takes other things, like bottles of water and hygiene products, so we aren't limited to food. It depends on what types of charities are available in the area and what World Zombie Day wants, if we decide to participate again.

1. I like the idea of not having a specific route, as zombies don't seem like the organized type, haha.

2. Charity=good.
If a mass amount of people are going to get together, why not donate something for a good cause?

3. Not sure how I feel about a theme. If people want to do something like that, they should, but it's more interesting, in my opinion, to see what everyone can come up with on their own.

So stoked for the next walk!

i think the idea of maybe having several different routes that perhaps connect at certain points but ends at the same stop, and put it on the back of a flyer would be cool, or even online for people to print off before they leave or something.

charity definitely. food drive is always awesome, cause that's something everyone always needs.

we could do something for the nashville humane shelter? they always need dog and cat supplies, food, cleaning stuff, etc.

themes would be fun. but either is cool.

I have been to 4??? Nashville zombie walks and I must say, My favorite one so far was the one where we walked down West End and ended up at Springwater... I remember walking by J.
Alexanders and banging on the window it was awesome!

One of the things I would like to address is starting the walk at riverfront park... Kind of bad parking downtown. kind of too much traffic (I know we want people to see the zombies but the group gets split up from the traffic also, not enough room on the sidewalks...)

Starting in another location maybe?

I like the half planned route idea. But, make the plan a good plan where people know what's going on. I think I planned route would be better if we had a set ending location that was not 3 miles away.

Can drive idea is awesome.

Also, the theme I could do. I have no problem with themes, but it sounds like people are down for no themes.

Maybe we could setup an all ages gathering for after the walk... like maybe the Belle court (or however you spell it) would be willing to show a zombie double feature that night? Can you say Dead Alive? and The original Dawn of the Dead?

I mean we have like 200 people who would come and see these movies so why not?

haven't attended yet, but..

2-3 different routes with certain waypoints sounds optimal, try and make getting back to transportation easier.

food drive is excellent, man cannot survive on brainz alone..

themed swarms perhaps... having 52 'Michael Jackson' zombies would get a bit silly, no? folks can post rosters here. A "must be this dead" requirement would probably be good though.

and staged attacks would be incredible!

Two zombie walks a year = way too much work for me. One is stressful enough. Plus, it loses fun and shock value when it happens so often.

Wing it on the route with an 80s zombie walk or a "Marvel Zombie" walk. Nothing like a bunch of super hero zombies running around (slowly). Slow Zombies Rule!

Optional routes at least three if routes are decided on a flier and online so it is easy to access.
The parking thing would be an issue maybe LP Field and walk across the bridge in one mass then descend on downtown? I don't know if you can park at LP Field anymore I haven't been there in a while.

Charity is good just tell us what to bring.

Themes can be good but like roommatethief9 said do we really want a mass group of people dressed as the same zombie? Its a good idea with a good intention but people might be the same and having a huge group of unique zombies makes it all the more real for those that have no clue about it.

That and a you must be this dead to play type thing would be great that and possibly like some links in say a blog to some costume / makeup design sites so people with zero experience can figure out how to do some gashes or get ideas.
