Last month, I wrote about some favorite cover versions of classic songs. I've thought of some wonderful covers by folks I know that I want to acknowledge, too:
"Why Don't You Try Me Tonight" done by T-Buck Burns (Tim Orsburn); written by Ry Cooder
"When I Stop Dreaming" done by Jimmy Beavers; original version by the Louvin Brothers
"Brand New Key" done (on roller skates) by Jenni M. Peal; originally by Melanie
"Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" on Lisa Markley's new CD; written by Fran Landesman and Tommy Wolf
"It's Not Unusual" samba-style on the latest Sergio in Acapulco CD; original hit by Tom Jones
"White Christmas" by Lozlo Lovas (as Jethro Tulsa); written by Irving Berlin
I'm afraid Tim's cover was never captured on a recording and he is, alas, no longer with us. I don't know if Jimmy plans to record "Dreaming" anytime soon, but if he does, I hope to be singing Ira's part. I don't think Jenni's done Melanie on a recording, but I may be wrong. Lisa & Sergio's CDs are available on the net; I know they're on iTunes. Now I gotta find an old cassette of Loz doing his "White Christmas" marathon.
