Hey Everyone,
So I've been around town a bit at some shows, talking to friends/bands, and the common question is "so what's going on with you guys? What is with this hiatus?" It is at this time that I realized there wasn't really an explanation, nor has there been any set plans for the future made public. Well, this blog is going to be as clear of an explanation as there will probably be for a little while because...its complicated...
Simply, there was not one reason for taking this hiatus -- there were several, none of which are enough to justify breaking up the band, but all of which justified taking some time to clear our heads and come up with a better plan for the future. All of these reasons fall under two categories: band-related issues and life-related issues. I think every band comes up against these types of things at some point, and this is our time to re-evaluate.
Non-band related issues were prevalent -- everywhere from financial concerns, to job-related issues, to positive things like me closing on my first condo/house (very exciting, but time-consuming and stressful as well). Simply put, we all had things in our personal lives that needed attention, and the band was taking away from that, and more importantly, that was taking away from the band.
The key point here is that due to these issues, we couldn't devote what we needed to in order to be successful and happy in it. In this day and age, with money being tight and the economy tough, it is more important than ever to really be PASSIONATE about the band you are in, or else it will destroy you. We felt like it was getting to a tipping point where we were forcing it -- trying to make it work because we love the band, but not possessing the tools to do so properly.
In all honesty, there were thoughts and discussions of giving up...is it all worth it we thought? Well, Mike and I can both say with definitiveness now that being away from it for merely a month or so, yes it is worth it, and yes we want to continue! Thanks to anyone who has shown us any support at all since the announcement, it has meant more than you think.
So what about the future? Well, we will most likely not be active in a gigging sense until 2010. Mike and I are planning on doing some writing in our free time so that when we start up again, we have the material for our first full-length album. When we start up again, we will also most likely be doing so with Ben playing bass for us. This is in no way a disrespect to Rob, who has done an admirable job filling-in and beyond that, really is the most siginificant and important bassist in the history of our band. Given Rob's interest in pursuing music in a serious way and our waffling about the status of the band, we all agreed it was best to allow him to pursue other avenues. Somehow, a part of me believes this is not the last show Rob will play with ADIL (or DTL, as we will be when we re-launch).
The bottom line is that I don't know exactly when we will be back, but I do know that when we are, things are going to be more focused and fun. We WILL have a new name, web layout, album, and attitude. 2010 is going to be a big year for DARKEN THE LIGHT, and we hope as many of you as possible choose to be a part of it.
Thanks for everything and we hope to rock out for you all as soon as possible!
