Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, November 15, 2006
After 40+ years of playing guitar ...and, with the encouragement of friends and family (especially my wife) pushing me on...I finally did my first instrumental album - a Christmas album. About 4 years ago (or so), the LORD wonderfully provided for us to put together a little home studio. With the Wickham home studio up and running, we could do the bulk of an album...and then by taking it to a 'big money' studio we could finish it up with the mix down and mastering. The first album we recorded was Philip's ("Phil Wickham" to most of you) indie album entitled "Give You My World". It was pretty incredible for his mom & me to see our middle child create through that...better part of a year. Then we began working on another album for my wife (Lisa)....during which time our firstborn son, Evan ("Evan Wickham" to most of you)  had enough songs to do an album. Recording Evan's album became the priority. His time was so limited due to his pastoral duties (Jr. high pastor) and being a husband and father of two - he put in like 5 hours one week, then 4 hours about two weeks later... and so on. The recording of his album entitled "Mysterious Things" went on for at least a year. Again, it was amazing to watch him work. His on-the-spot creativity was truly impressive.

I remember many years ago (70's) when the term "recording artist" began being commonly used for any Christan musician/singer that recorded. It was, at times, just plain weird to hear it. The term didn't seem to fit. I knew a great many of them personally, and was one of them.... we were creative, but also needed all the help we could get. These two words, "Recording Artists" - emphasis on 'artists', came alive to me while recording both Evan and Philip.

I'm not biased at all.... do I sound like a dad or what?

Well, after those albums were done, the time opened up to do this Christmas instrumental album. It started (in mind) as an acoustic guitar 'thing' - and just grew. I couldn't help picking up the electric as well. The LORD willing, I'll do more. My wife is showing signs of wanting to do another album - - truly an answer to prayer. Who knows, maybe we'll even get our daughter behind the mic. Evan has a few (that's two) more albums just about ready to begin recording. And when Philip records at home now
... it's just for a quick demo, or to sing/play on one of our albums. He's with the wonderful team of brothers and sisters at Simple Records/INO Records.

So, I truly hope you can give a listen to the Christmas album and allow yourself to meditate on the "WORD made flesh", "Savior of the world", "Jesus, the Christ", "Emmanuel - God with us". He is worthy of our praise!

Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours!
