I couldn't count the number of times the phrase "muito obrigado" was
used on a daily basis by locals and eventually by me. At times, the
usage of the informal "valeu" as an expression of gratitude started to
add up as well.
One
of the biggest lessons I took back on this trip was an appreciation of
everything that , comparative to a lot of people in Rio , makes my life
comfortable . In spite of the daily challenges that a number of them
face, subsisting on a monthly minimum wage of 400 Reais ( US $ 180.00 )
or even less, these are some of the happiest people on earth. A lot of
Cariocas ( Rio de Janeiro residents ) believe that they do live in the
Cidade Maravilhosa ( marvelous city ), with an awesome quality of
life ( a rhythm & pace all its own plus samba, bossa nova , MPB (
Musica Popular Brasileiro & futbol @ Maracana Stadium , hah ). So
what's not to be thankful for. As one of my new friend's tatuagem (
tattoo ) declared on his back, " Deus e Fiel " , i.e. : I exist by the
grace of God & Faith.
This Carioca was the true essence of
"brincadeira" or fun; one who totally celebrated the kid in him every
chance & moment he had .
Very yogic in outlook. Jennifer
Jordans's online article " Yoga & Gratitude " encapsulates it as :
" Gratitude is a way of deeply appreciating the full spectrum of life -
the good and the bad, the joy & the suffering. Gratitude teaches
people to gain peace of mind. So does yoga. "
Another lesson
learned was to let go of any expectations of reciprocation , as
reciprocation & appreciation came so naturally in Rio ; there was
no necessity to even think about it.
