A friend of mine had suggested Dice Iida-Klein's 10:15 AM Saturday class @ Home Simply Yoga as a great ADVANCED Vinyasa session.
Unlike
most other Santa Monica based studios which tout "Level 2-3" classes
that don't deliver (i.e. blank stares when random asanas are
called ) , this one has a strong practitioner base ( most of them
Ashtangis ) and a teacher who has an ease & fluidity with
inversions and vinyasas.
I enjoyed the energy of my classmates
, most especially the yogini beside me , who was using Ashtanga jump
throughs and handstands for her vinyasa transitions. Asanas were held
for not longer than 5 breaths, sharing a lot in common with Jerome
M.'s playful Eka Pada Kundinyasa & Galavasana sequences.
The
high point was the 15 minute section on inversions where Dice broke
down Adho Mukha Vrksasana & Pincha Mayurasana in front
of the class ; showing the importance of the alignment of hips over
shoulders and maintaining UDDIYANA BANDHA even before kicking up. So
whether one was practicing against the wall or in the middle of the
room , you eventually got that feeling of "Lift-off" , when he would
come over and work with you. I also saw the breakdown of
Vrischika-asana with another classmate, where the key is to resist -
The
vibe of the class is cool as the soundtrack is rocker / surfie. And
playing the role of "yogic witness", there will always be those 2
yoginis talking loudly before class ; but as always, they will be the
ones whose energy are the most painful during practice. Dice , just
like John S. , also teaches @ Black Dog Yoga in Encino.
