Current mood:  cynical
I'd like to apologise in advance for the brevity and lameness of this blog, my first, my Virgin Blog. Being new to this format, I am not yet aware of the subtleties of blog foreplay.....how to get things "warmed up", as it were. I have been sitting in the Catskill woods contemplating (in no particular order) the confusing (yet oddly optimistic) state of my professional career, the appaling state of the United States government (and the people who think things are really going "great" with it), and what I might rustle up for a nice lunch. Sometimes the simple beauty of this place just eliminates all threads of thought, much like a surprisingly large shot of good tequila. Actually, that doesn't sound too bad right now.... For those of you curious as to what the hell is going on with me at the moment, I am "on sabbatical" from everything but being a family man. I have been using the free time to explore the path of my childhood (in New Hampshire and Mass.), drink beer, cook food, and write songs. It's been a long time since I had the personal brain time to do the latter, and it's feels fucking great. Sure, I'm broke as a mofo, but what else is new? We are currently trying to decide whether we should go back to Memphis or not. Things are great for my wife up here, kids can go either way, but I'm not sure if it's gonna work for me yet. Great thing about Memphis: 20 years of infrastructure, great musicianship, low overhead, the local gigs that keep you together between the bigger ones. Losing the Frampton gig (no reason given, other than an old friend became available, thanks for everything, see ya...) sorta changed the math for me.....that and not having sold the house before winter (youch!). You need a coupla years to break into any scene well enough to create any feasible income without getting a real job, and I'm getting to old for that shit. Still, there are some interesting things going on up here, and I'm slowly but surely making friends and contacts up here. Still, Memphis lurks down there, with that inevitable Memphis invisible bungee cord. You'd have to live there awhile to even understand it, not that I actually do. I've got a lot on my mind these days, so don't be too surprised to see some more postings in the near future. That is, if you even give a shit! Ross

Well yes, actually, I do give a shit

I know all about the invisible Memphis bungee cord, brother. 'Still feel a slight tug now & then, but having been away from home for (christ)15 years now the tug is pretty gentle. Mostly due to the fact that every time I do go home to visit I get major Thomas Wolfe vibes because it's changed so much since 1990. I can go back to the place on the map, but the Memphis I left just isn't there anymore. I know it's good for the city and for business and all that but every time there's just something I miss about the old, still vaugley run-down, Beale St. I hate that Handy Park has been turned into an admmision only mini-shed. But enough about my gripes . . .

I hear you about the beauty of the Mountains too. I've been to the Catskills a few times and it is definately nice. A lot like it is here in Western NC (same mountain range after all). Sorry to hear things are running dry in the music business area but glad to hear the music music is looking up. After all it's been almost ten years since I bought a new Ross Rice cd  . I'm looking forward to a new one as ASAP!

Keep the faith,

J~

Sigh. To be in the woods in upstate New York.....and on a sabbatical. Can you believe that someone might possibly be jealous of that? AND with a wonderful family, to boot...........  yes, tis true. I might be envious, just a tad. But envy and the color green don't suit me so, just wanted to say it's good to "find" you again on here. I'm wishing you the best. We miss you here in Memphis and especially the Thursday nights at the Blue Monkey. But, you're a far better musician than just doing the same thing by rote each week so I know that something wonderful is just around the corner. Enjoy the sabbatical. Everyone needs one on occasion. Enjoy this time. I know some great art will come from it!

Until I read your profile, I didn't realize that we probably crossed paths way back in the early 80's. We went to the UofM at the same time. I always thought you looked really familiar and not just from being around the local scene. I'm sure it was back then. Jemaine also looks very familiar.

At any rate, have a wonderful week! Good to cross paths again, even if it is in cyberspace!
