I've written two songs in the past few weeks. And I'm going to be completely unmodest and say they're really awesome songs. I've been building up my skills in Garageband, so I'm learning to incorporate a lot of layers that really add a new element to my music.

My only problem. My vocals suck. I know. Everyone tells me. You don't have to tell me again. In my defense, they've been getting better, definitely better than a year ago. But still, they suck. And I can only rerecord vocals so many times before I just get entirely frustrated and abandon the entire project. So the question is, do I just go ahead and post the songs with shoddy vocals, or should I shelve it all to retry again in another year when my vocals are presentable?

Seriously. Would love any input.

i found your mp3s from the spiral message boards. speaking as one who does vocals, the 3 biggest things that i'm always reminding myself to keep in mind are: listening, breathing and confidence. once you learn good breathe control, and learn to not be self conscious, you'll be able to objectively listen to yourself and actively correct what you don't like. sounds like simple common sense, but i think it's a lot harder to implement when it's just you and your mic and you're frustrated because you just did take 12 and it's still not "the one".

if it's at all an option, don't be afraid to take a beginners vocal class at a community college or something. the breath control exercises, performance experience, and objective input can go a long way (they did for me).

as long as you know where you want to get, performance-wise, i think you can get there. your voice has a really nice timbre (especially on "remember yesterday"), and once you get it bent to your will, i think you'll be able to do awesome things. carpe diaphragma!
