POSTHUMAN TANTRA - Interview to the italian online music magazine ALONE MUSIC. Edgar Franco interviewd by Shifter.
Ciao Edgar and welcome to Alone Music!Let's begin the interview....
1. Your project named "Posthuman Tantra", is without any doubt, one of the most extreme that I've ever heard. Can You describe how was it born and why?
Thank you very much for your comment. Adjectives such as extreme, strange, crazy, are often used to qualify my work. It happens because it's constantly trying to innovate, which makes it hard to be labeled. The Posthuman Tantra emerged naturally during the development of my fictional universe named Posthuman Dawn – a future fictional world based on the fusion between DNA and silicon, where there are new creatures that are a mixture of human, vegetal, animal and machine. In this hypothetical planet Earth of the future there exist three different species: the Technogenetic (hybrids of human, animal and vegetal - their humanimal bodies might be like mythical beings such as centaur and mermaid); the Extropians (human beings whose consciousness have been transferred to a silicon chip and live in a robotic body) and the Resistants (actual humans who are in extinction). This universe has been used as basis for the creation of my artistic work with multiple media. The Posthuman Tantra was created in 2004 as a sound extension of my visual and narrative expressions – an abyssal psychedelic sci-fi industrial dream. The project's name let us think of a seemingly paradoxical relation between technology and transcendental mysticism. Actually, the music's general basis proposes an interaction between these universes: a thought over technognostic processes.
2. Why this choice of so appalling and dark sounds?
The Posthuman Tantra shows the darkness as means to evoke a differentiated sight towards the light.We live in a world that's at the borders of complete collapse or about to make the quantic jump that will take the human kind into a new level of consciousness. Since the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the cartesian-materialist point of view about life, our species disconnected itself from the totality, we started to understand ourselves as pieces disconnected from nature, and developed a completely egoistic and egocentric system of life. All the destruction we have been causing to the planet is based on the principle that we are independent of it, we actually forgot that we all are part of a great living system called Gaia! The establishment of money has developed a disastrous search for “possessions”, happiness became dependent on objects, and this system taught us not only to despise Gaia, but also to despise and compete with our own species. Publicity/Advertisement is the dark magic of our time, because it takes billions of human beings to work for this ego-profiting system. And publicity is said to work with beautiful images. Imagine that some banks profit millions by exploring impoverished populations, still they advertise their enterprise by showing happy families in green parks! The automobile industry (which inflicts the world with the egoistic plague of cars) show young and beautiful couples driving through empty roads and beautiful landscapes (all lies!). Beautiful and clean publicity is also used by dogmatic systems, religions above all. For this reason I set aside such fake luminous cleanness that contaminated dogmas and publicity. From the thoughtful darkness will flourish a new light!
3. What type of objectives do You have for Your music?
The Posthuman Tantra believes in a possible reconnection of our species with its cosmic essence, and within my pseudo-obscure music I look towards the light. It's an anti-propaganda coming from the underground culture, the necessary nigredo to implode the disgusting ego-monetarism by means of spreading the post-humanism through the morfogenetic resonance. My music thinks over the relationship between men and technology within today's and future contexts. Sometimes I present a negative point of view, one of possible ways, for instance the end of our sweet-bitter human race due to the egocentric and disconnected spread of hypertechnology, but in other songs I display my hope in the singularity, in the moment when technological advances will produce a new transcendental consciousness, taking the humankind to the absolute reconnection with the cosmos. In this moment we'll be post-humans, we'll overcome all the rottenness the egocentrism and the forgetting of the systemic vision caused to Gaia and to ourselves, we'll be a new post-humankind. After all, Posthuman Tantra's songs are chaotic thoughts that evoke this technoginostic light-darkness.
4. Into Your disk "Neocortex Plug-in", I've found a multimedial link, in which You describe a post modern world where sex and violence with evil androids and children live together. Do You really imagine a world like this in the future or it is only a mad and scary story?
This is one of the dark points of view of a hypertechnological future. The multimedia track Game-o-tech 2.0 shows post-human children with a changed sense of morality who play of hurting living transgenic creatures, which were created in future labs of biotechnological global companies. Life is seen as a product and instead of shooting avatars in a computer game, these children now kill and hurt these creatures – they are treated only as products! I hope this story is only one of my obscure point of views, and the future won't lead us towards this way. Yet, if we don't recover the systemic vision, it might become true.
5. Apart the violence, I like very much the drawings of Your disk animation, who is the author?
I'm the creator of all music and art related to the Posthuman Tantra, it's a multimedia project. All drawings in the booklet, cover and multimedia track are my creations. My next CD, called Transhuman Reconnection Ecstasy, to be released in 2009 by Legatus Records (www.legatusrecords.net), has a new multimedia track, such as Game-o-tech 2.0.
6. It seems to me that You don't have a lot of trust in the use of the modern technology nowadays, it is true?
As I said before, I'm not a technophobe. I believe in several technological advantages/benefits and the possibility of reaching a desirable new level of transcendental consciousness by means of technological processes linked to ancestral processes of connection to the universe. I believe that – as the artist Roy Ascott and the ethnobotanic Terence McKenna have proposed – we must ally the possibilities of three realities: the real life (our material life, based on the perceptions of the 5 senses), the vegetal life (based on the ingestion of enteógenos – drugs of power that make us see our universal dimension, visions of connection that have existed since ancestral times and were forgotten and denied by the egoistic-monetarist-Cartesianism) and the new virtual realities (the possibility of creation of simulated worlds and the expansion of the consciousness into silicon). Adding the continuous experience of these 3 realities to the artistic expression might take us into a new level as species. However, technology based on profits and the feeding of the human ego might lead us to the end/extinction. We have developed several options of clean energy production, much better than petrol – solar energy, energy produced by the wind and the tides, etc – but the global thrusts of petrol insist in keeping the exploitation of this polluting kind of energy, plus the automobile industry has denied the electric car. There is no systemic vision. They are concerned in filling their pockets and that's all. The profits restrain the advance of the true and good technology! The internet is destroying the entertainment industry, which has transformed art in profit, and the global companies don't know what to do. Fact is that the internet is such an advanced and beautiful kind of technology that it transcends this system based on profits. It is light within the rotten tunnel of profits. The internet is the noosfere of Chardin, a net that will connect all minds on the Earth, and if the global companies do not destroy its essence, we'll be only one mind in the future, the mind of Gaia!
7. How did musical critic in general after the listening "Neocortex Plug-in" reacted?
Many didn't understand well what the project proposes, because my music requires a deep diving into the destruction of some paradigms, so that the trip be complete! It's necessary to get rid of dogmas and wish to create new neuron connections to be able to sail on the waves of the Posthuman Tantra. On the other hand, several intelligent critics, who accepted diving into it, have understood its proposal and praised my work with many positive compliments. Neocortex Plug-in was given 9 points by the Brazilian version of the german magazine Rock Hard, and the Posthuman Tantra received several compliments in reviews of other important vehicles of the kind, such as The Machinist (Byelorussia), Judas Kiss (England), PAN.O.RA.MA, Occult Magickal Web Journal (Colombia), among others.
8. Which kind of sensation do You want to transmit to the people?
Something of pain, a bit of pleasure, above all the desire to reconnect to our true universal and infinite essence.
9. Is there anything that gives You creeps or makes You scared? And contrarily, which is the think that makes You happy?
Yes, the techno-egoism scares me. This year, in my country (Brazil), 500 new cars are sold per hour, while only 15 persons are born per hour! The government goes on supporting car companies and they go on filling in the streets with millions of polluting exhaustion pipes – for me cars are like the apocalypse riders. For this reason I decided not to drive, not have a car. I really would like to get a Ferrari as a present, because it would be wonderful to destroy it completely in one of Posthuman Tantra's shows. It would show how I despise all this wild industry that is helping lead our species into the abyss! It's a promise and a challenge! A challenge to all car companies to give me cars. I'll destroy them all in Posthuman Tantra's performances, and I invite all those people who truly love the Earth to do the same. What really makes me happy is to create, to try to reach transcendence by means of the arts, and so be able to share with people my ideal of reconnection with Gaia and the Cosmos! I'm also happy to be able to share a quiet sunny day with my beloved wife, my 4 cats, and 4 dogs, walk with them in the forests near my house, meet good friends and my family!
10. I've read that this work is a sci-fi ambient industrial soundtrack to the "Posthuman Aurora"; which kind of movie did inspired You? Do You remember "Bladerunner"?
I really enjoy cinema, mainly science fiction. I could spend all day quoting movies, but besides the wonderful Blade Runner, I'll quote 4 movies I consider very relevant for the questions they bring up: Gattaca, by Andrew Niccol; Tetsuo-The Iron Man, by Shinya Tsukamoto; eXistenZ and Videodrome, by David Cronenberg. Entrevista do POSTHUMAN TANTRA para o portal de música Italiano ALONE MUSIC. Conduzida por Shifter Olá Edgar e seja bem vindo à ALONE MUSIC! Vamos começar a entrevista. 1. O Seu projetomusical chamado"Posthuman Tantra", é sem sombra de dúvida, um dos mais estranhos que eu já ouvi. Você poderia nos descrever como ele surgiu e por quê? Obrigado por seu comentário, termos como "extremo", "estranho", "louco" são adjetivos muito usados para qualificar minha arte, isso acontece pelo fato dela ser difícil de rotular e buscar algo novo. O Posthuman Tantra surgiu como parte natural do desenvolvimento de meu universo ficcional intitulado “Aurora Pós-humana” -mundo ficcional futuro baseado na fusão entre DNA & Silício, com novas criaturas que mixam humano, animal, vegetal e máquinas. Nesse planeta Terra hipotético do futuro convivem três espécies de seres: os Tecnogenéticos (frutos da hibridização entre humanos, animais e vegetais – possuem corpos humanimais e podem se assemelhar a formas míticas como centauro & sereia), os Extropianos (são seres humanos que transferiram sua consciência para um chip de silício e passaram a viver em um corpo robótico) e os Resistentes (humanos propriamente ditos que estão em processo de extinção). Esse universo tem servido de base para a criação de meus trabalhos artísticos em múltiplas mídias. O “Posthuman Tantra” surgiu em 2004 como um desdobramento sonoro de minhas expressões visuais e narrativas - um abissal e psicodélico sonho sci-fi industrial - o nome do projeto instiga a pensarmos uma relação aparentemente paradoxal entre tecnologia e misticismo transcendental – na verdade a base geral das músicas propõe a interação entre esses universos: uma reflexão sobre processos tecnognósticos. 2. Por quê a opção por uma sonoridade tão aterradora e obscura? Na verdade o Posthuman Tantra mostra a escuridão para provocar um olhar diferenciado em direção à "luz". Vivemos em um mundo à beira do colapso total ou em vias de realizar o salto quântico que levará a humanidade a um novo patamar de consciência. Desde a Revolução Industrial, do advento da visão cartesiana-materialista da vida, a nossa espécie desconectou-se da totalidade, passamos a nos entender como partes desconectadas da natureza e desenvolvemos um sistema de vida completamente egoísta e egocentrista. Toda a destruição do planeta parte do princípio de que somos criaturas independentes dele, esquecemos que, na verdade, somos todos partes de um grande sistema vivo chamado Gaia! O monetarismo desenvolveu também uma busca desastrosa pelo "ter", a felicidade passou a depender de objetos e esse sistema ensinou-nos não só a desprezar Gaia, mas desprezarmos e competirmos com nossa própria espécie. A publicidade é a "magia negra" do nosso tempo, pois ela mobiliza bilhões de seres humanos e trabalha em favor desse sistema egolucrativo, e a publicidade trabalha com imagens "belas". Veja só, alguns bancos lucram milhões e ajudam a explorar populações empobrecidas, mas fazem propagandas com famílias felizes em parques verdejantes! Montadoras de veículos (que estão pesteando o planeta com a praga egoísta dos fálicos carros) mostram jovens e belos casais dirigindo por ruas vazias e parques lindos (mentira deslavada!). Publicidade bela e limpa também é utilizada por sistemas dogmáticos, sobretudo as religiões. Por isso eu abdico dessa limpeza luminosa falsa que contaminou a publicidade e os dogmas, da escuridão reflexiva florescerá a nova luz! 3. Quais os objetivos que você tem ao criar sua música? O Posthuman Tantra acredita na possibilidade de reconexão de nossa espécie com sua essência cósmica e nas entrelinhas de minha música pseudo-obscura vislumbro a luz. É uma anti-propaganda vinda da cultura underground, o nigredo necessário para implodir o egomonetarismo ultrajante através da difusão do pós-humanismo pela via da ressonância morfogenética. Minha música reflete sobre as imbricações entre homem e tecnologia no contexto atual e futuro, hora apresento uma visão distópica - um dos caminhos possíveis, o fim de nossa doce/amarga raça humana pela hipertecnologização egoísta e desconectada (fábulas da destruição, uma Terra vazia pós-humana sem humanos!), mas em outras músicas retrato minha esperança na singularidade, no momento em que os avanços tecnológicos produzirão uma nova consciência transcendente, levando a humanidade à uma reconexão absoluta com o cosmos - nesse momento seremos pós-humanos, ultrapassaremos tudo aquilo de podre que o egocentrismo e o esquecimento da visão sistêmica causaram a Gaia e a nós mesmos -, seremos uma nova pós-humanidade. Enfim, as músicas do Posthuman Tantra são sigilos caoticistas que evocam essa tensão tecnognóstica luz-escuridão. 4. Em seu álbum "Neocortex Plug-in", eu encontrei uma faixa multimídia, na qual você descreve um mundo pós-moderno no qual sexo e violência com andróides malignos e crianças convivem juntos. Você realmente imagina um mundo assim no futuro ou isso é apenas uma assusatadora e insana história? Está é uma das visões negras de futuro hipertecnologico, na faixa multimídia "Game-o-tech 2.0" são crianças pós-humanas de moralidade modificada que brincam de ferir criaturas transgêncas vivas criadas em laboratórios futuros de multinacionais da biotecnologia. A vida é tratada como um produto e ao invês de destruir avatares num game de computador essas crianças agora matam e ferem essas criaturas - tratadas somente como produtos! Veja que acontece coisa parecida com a indústria mundial da carne, as vidas de nossas espécies irmãs tornaram-se simples produtos. Eu espero que essa história seja apenas um de meus sigilos obscuros e que o futuro não caminhe nessa direção, mas se não resgatarmos a visão sistêmica, pode vir a tornar-se realidade. 5. Deixando a violência de lada, eu gostei muito dos desenhos da faixa multimídia do CD, quem é o criador deles? Eu sou o criador de toda a música e arte relacionada ao Posthuman Tantra - um projeto multimídia. Todos os desenhos do encarte, arte da capa e da faixa multimídia são de minha autoria. Em meu próximo CD, entitulado "Transhuman Reconnection Ecstasy", a ser lançado pela Legatus Records ( www.legatusrecords.net ) em 2009, teremos uma nova faixa multimídia nesses moldes. 6. Parece que você não confia no uso da tecnologia contemporânea. Isso é verdade? É como eu disse anteriormente, não sou um tecnófobo, acredito em muitas benesses tecnológicas e na possibilidade de alcançarmos um desejável novo patar de consciencia transcendente através de processos tecnológicos ligados a ancentrais processos de conexão com o universo. Acho que, lembrando o artista Roy Ascott e o etnobotânico Terence McKenna, devemos aliar as possibilidades de três realidades: a realidade validada (nossa vida material, baseada na percepção dos 5 sentidos), a realidade vegetal (baseada na ingestão de enteógenos - as drogas de poder que nos fazem vislumbrar nossa dimensão universal, visões de conexão que já existiam desde a ancestralidade e foram esquecidas e renegadas pelo cartesianismo-egoísta-monetarista) e finalmente as novas realidades virtuais (a possibilidade de criação de mundos simulados e a expansão da consciencia in silício). Somar uma vivência contínua dessas 3 realidades à expressão artística pode levar-nos a um outro patamar como espécie. No entanto a tecnologia baseada na geração de lucro e na alimentação do ego humano pode nos levar ao fim. Veja que já temos dezenas de opções energéticas limpas e superiores ao petróleo - energia solar, geotérmica, eólica, das mares, etc. Mas o truste global do petróleo insiste em manter a exploração dessa energia poluente e a indústria automobilística renegou o carro elétrico. Não existe visão sistêmica, eles estão preocupados em encher seus bolsos e só, o lucro impede a verdadeira e boa tecnologia de avançar! A Internet está implodindo a indústria do entretenimento que transformou a arte em lucro e as multinacionais não sabem o que fazer, o fato é que a rede é uma tecnologia tão avançada e bela que transcende esse sistema baseado no lucro, é uma luz nesse túnel podre do lucro. A Internet é a "Noosfera" de Chardin, uma rede que ligará todas as mentes do Globo, se as multinacionais não destruirem a essência da rede, seremos uma só mente no futuro, a mente Gaia! 7. Como a crítica musical em geral reagiu ao ouvir o CD "Neocortex Plug-in"? Muitos não entenderam bem a proposta, pois minha música exige um mergulho profundo e destruição de certos paradigmas arraigados para que a viagem seja completa! É preciso livrar-se de seus dogmas e desejar criar novas conexões neuronais para navegar nas ondas do Posthuman Tantra. Por outro lado vários críticos inteligentes que aceitaram esse mergulho entenderam a proposta e elogiaram muito o trabalho, "Neocortex Plug-in" recebeu nota 9 na versão brasileira da revista alemã Rock Hard e o Posthuman Tantra foi muito elogiado em outras resenhas de veículos importantes do gênero como The Machinist (Bielorrúsia), Judas Kiss (Inglaterra), PAN.O.RA.MA Occult Magickal Web Journal (Colombia), entre outros. 8. Quais sensações você quer transmitir para as pessoas? Algo de dor, um pouco de prazer, mais principalmente o desejo de reconectar-se à nossa verdadeira essência universal e infinita! 9. Existe alguma coisa que lhe dá arrepios e o deixa assustado? E ao contrário disso, o que o deixa feliz? Sim, o tecnoegoísmo me deixa assustado! Em meu país, o Brasil, esse ano (2009) são vendidos por hora 500 novos carros, enquanto nascem apenas 15 pessoas por hora! O governo continua apoiando as montadoras de carros com isenção de impostos e infestando as ruas com milhões de escapamentos poluentes - para mim os carros são como cavaleiros do apocalipse - por isso optei por não dirigir, não ter carro. Eu gostaria muito de ganhar uma Ferrari pois seria maravilhoso destruí-la completamente em um show do Posthuman Tantra, demonstraria todo o meu repúdio a essa indústria selvagem que está ajudando a levar nossa espécie ao abismo! E isso é uma promessa e um desafio! Desafio todas as montadoras de carros a me darem carros, destruirei todos eles em performances do Posthuman Tantra, convoco todos aqueles que têm verdadeiro amor pela Terra a fazerem o mesmo! O que me faz verdadeiramente feliz é criar - buscar atingir a transcendência através da arte e poder compartilhar com as pessoas meu ideal de reconexão com Gaia e com o Cosmos! Também sou feliz ao compartilhar um dia tranquilo de sol com minha amada esposa, com meus 4 cães e 4 gatos, passear com eles nas florestas próximas à minha casa, encontrar verdadeiros amigos e a minha família! 10. Eu li que sua música é a trilha sonora de ficção científica ambient para a aurora pós-humana. Que tipo de filme inspira você? Você se lembra de Blade Runner? Eu gosto muito de cinema, principalmente ficção científica, poderia ficar o dia inteiro aqui citando filmes, mas além do maravilhoso Blade Runner, citarei outros 4 que considero seminais pelas questões que evocam: Gattaca, de Andrew Niccol; Tetsuo-The Iron Man, de Shinya Tsukamoto; eXistenZ & Videodrome, de David Cronenberg.
