will never know what it is like
to have a million dollars.
and yet we will watch television
as handsome men and
plastic women
squander and fight over
bags of money
as if it were ever deserved.

we will count pennies and squeeze them
until they squeak
and fret ever having to buy
groceries.
we will take terrible jobs because
there is an opportunity to
earn more.
we will buy alcohol
or jewelry or
gamble
as if this could make it all
better.
we will sit in dark rooms and try to sleep
as the world around us
continues on.

and then, one day,
someone will rise from this terrible nightmare
and break away from this lifestyle;
this person will rise like the phoenix
in flames –
leaving us all

leaving us to

our

mundaneness.

Ag Synclair ~ Taking A Break From The Writing Arts

Something of a metaphore for the times in which we live.

Well done.

A great observation on todays world, people take pleasure from without instead of within I guess it's emotionally cheaper.

What a picture of a culture of greed and materialism! Love the clincher too.

Where are the Metaphysical philosophers of old, the Emersonian Idealists?

Excellent write.

I see this poem was written even before the big meltdown, and obviously you were onto something then and it is ringing true even louder today.  I really like your writing style.  I'm glad I stumbled on your page, because I've been hoping to find some interesting writing.  I'm looking forward to reading more!

Poetry for All To Ignore

Nice work, the poem is simple and gets right to the point. Nothing to imagine just straight words. It seems we all want to break away from the mundane.

I do have to agree with "Spectral Remnants" in the comments, ascohol does mak everything better.

By the way, thanks for the add! It is my hope that you will reciprocate the gesture of reading your work. I believe a poem for a poem, or something to that effect. We are all here to help each other grow.

Thanks & Write On
