June 6th. The anniversary of D-Day, when the Allies invades Nazi occupied Europe in 1944, means more to me than most. Sadly, most Americans don't remember that historic day anymore. They most certainly do not celebrate it. That's too bad. Many of what Tom Brokow calls "The Greatest Generation" gave their all that day to free Europe from the tyranny of Nazi fascists.
As I said it means a lot to me, and not just because I'm in the military myself, but because my dad was there. He was one of those young, brave American soldiers who "hit the beach" that day and survived. I grew up hearing stories of what he did, how he did it and what it was like. Unlike some, my dad would talk to certain people about it all. I was lucky to be one of those he confided in. As I got older he would share with me what it really felt to be a soldier, to be in combat, to be captured and to be a POW. No, it's not pretty. But as he says, it was necessary.
All those who didn't make it back on that day. Whose wives & mothers got that dreaded telegram. Who lie in white marked graves in the military cemeteries in Normandy, France. They deserve our respect and remembrance. They earned it. They paid the debt for the freedom we all take for granted now. Freedoms that are eroding away because we don't teach history the way we should and so the mistakes of the past become easily repeated.
My dad never wanted me in uniform. Don't get me wrong. He's proud of me & what I do but he has always said that he & his generation fought a war so that their children and grandchildren would not have to. Yet, here we are, two wars later, still fighting for the freedom of the oppressed. But we're Americans, and that's what Americans do. We are still "The shining city on the hill" and the last hope of anyone who yearns to live as a free man.
We remember those who fell on D-Day and why they were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice with a quote from Ike. "In the final choice, a soldier's pack is not so heavy a burden as a prisoner's chains." - General Dwight D. Eisenhower
