The other night I was up watching Conan O'Brien as usual and I saw a commercial that I found extremely hateful, divisive, and utterly disturbing.
It was an ad for Prop 8 that was sponsored by a church group and it was urging people to vote yes on the proposition.
If you're like most people in my age demographic, you have no idea what this proposition is about.
To paraphrase the prop, a vote yes for the proposition would amend the
California constitution to make same sex marriages illegal; a vote NO would keep it the way it is and allow gay couples to get married.
Getting back to the commercial, which literally says "We don't have to accept this" in regards to same sex marriages; it also reads, "Protect Traditional Marriage". Excuse me, but what the fuck does that mean? What is there to protect? How do gay marriages affect traditional ones? Is there a war between Gay marriage and straight ones going on that I didn't hear about? The commercial also claims that same sex marriage will be taught in schools…are you kidding me?? When's the last time they taught traditional marriage in school. If you were like me, your health class consisted of penis, vagina, and a bunch of "ewwwwwwwwww's".
Honestly, it's all a bunch of hateful BULLSHIT from right wing wacko Christian conservatives. I'm not going to sit here and argue on a religious or spiritual level, I'm speaking strictly on a factual one. No matter what you believe about gay people, that's your deal, it IS NOT the responsibility of our government to discriminate on those because of sexual preference. It is not the governments' job to sponsor any one religion, no matter what the bible belt believes, this country has a separation of church and state for a reason people! Let me let you in on a little secret, WE'RE NOT A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY for fucks sake!
Now, I'm not an expert on the bible but I did go to catechism most of my formative years and one thing I do remember. if my memory serves me correct, is that Jesus Christ was accepting of people. He did not hangout with well to do people, he was with the thieves, prostitutes, and criminals. Now if you're a Christian, aren't you striving to be as close to being like jesus as possible, he is the example right? If that's the case, why are most of you so divisive when it comes to this issue? I find it highly hypocritical.
In the end, it doesn't matter what the bible or any other religious book says, a document that definitely matters goes something like this:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Did you guys get that?? It says, All men are created EQUAL....and have RIGHTS! It applied to the civil rights movement and it applies now in this situation as well. Let's not repeat our past faults. Let's get this one right and prove that as a country we have learned from our mistakes. STOP THE HATE people!
