Thrash with power! Zwei Jahre nach „Electrify“ melden sich PARADOX
mit einem weiteren Album zurück, das jedem Fan der (melodischen) alten
Bay-Area-Schule reinlaufen dürfte wie ein gut eingefettetes Klistier.
Erstklassige Gitarrenarbeit mit Sperrfeuer-Riffing und hochmelodischen Soli,
melodisch-rauer Gesang und eine mächtig tighte Rhythmusabteilung, die
den zehn Songs ordentlich Dampf unter dem Allerwertesten macht. Überhaupt
haben Charly Steinhauer & Co. in Sachen Speed und Aggression noch mal
ordentlich nachgelegt und bringen die Nackenmuskulatur des geneigten Hörers
fast permanent in Wallung. PARADOX sind musikalisch zwar felsenfest in der
alten Schule verwurzelt, schaffen es aber mühelos, dabei nicht mal für
eine einzige Sekunde altmodisch oder gar altbacken zu klingen. Reife Leistung!

Guten Tag liebe Leute, bitte einsteigen und gut anschnallen, denn die
Würzburger PARADOX laden uns zu einer rasanten Fahrt ein, die uns durch
Power, Speed und Thrash führt.
Schon der Einstieg ist mit "Suburban Riot Squad" völlig geil, Sänger
und Gitarrist Charly Steinhauer jagt uns mit seinem Saiten Kollegen Kai
Pasemann so machen Bastard aus geilen Riffs um die Ohren, das ist der
Speed, den man liebt und der auch weit über die Grenze hinaus im Thrash
Metal beheimatet ist. Auch mit "Hollow Peace" bleibt es flott, Drummer
Roland Jahoda peitscht da mächtig voran, doch hier kommen schon ab und
zu auch melodische Passagen zum Vorschein, das Solo allerdings ist
giftig und geil wie die Sau. Durch die starke Produktion kommt bei der
Mid Tempo Nummer "Riptide" auch Basser Olly Keller voll zur Geltung,
der hier neben den griffigen Riffs seinen groovenden Part zum Besten
gibt. "Rise in Rank" schraubt das Tempo am Anfang ein wenig zurück, da
kommt die Melodie und das harmonische Gitarrenspiel in den Vordergrund,
bevor es dann in speediger Manier voller Wucht und Power geradlinig
nach vorne geht und schon ein wenig an alte Blind Guardian erinnert.
Mein Favorit kommt dann mit "Evolution Reset", da ist Bleifuß angesagt,
musikalisch auf der Thrash Überholspur und nur mal für kurze Momente
durch atmen, ansonsten einfach Speed bis zum Abwinken. Dazu herrlich
greifende Melodien, besser geht es nicht. Ihr Faible zu älteren
Metallica kommt bei dem Track "Nothingness" wieder ganz leicht zum
Vorschein, bevor wieder so eine vernichtend flotte Nummer voller
Melodie und Power namnes "No Place to Survive" mächtig viel Staub
aufwirbelt. Eine geile Banger Nummer mit variablem Tempo ist "Dream
Hero", während "Planet Terror" ein reiner, harter Stampfer ist, der
auch mal kurze, akustische Parts in sich birgt. Knüppel aus dem Sack
lassen PARADOX mit ".Psychofficial", das schnellste und auch leider
schon letzte Stück der Scheibe. Hier holen die Würzburger zu einem
Rundum Schlag aus, der sich gewaschen hat und wieder verdeutlicht, wie
geil die Band doch klingt. Schade nur, dass sie durch diverse
Rückschläge längere Pausen einlegen musste, aber hoffen wir mal für die
Herren, dass jetzt alles konstant läuft und sie jetzt problemlos durch
starten können.Sehr gut

Charly Steinhauer ist ein Mann der zu seinen Worten
steht, denn in unserem Interview vor 1 ½ Jahren hatte er „versprochen“ das die
Paradox-Fans nicht wieder Ewigkeiten auf eine neue Scheibe warten müssten.
Klar, war das so nie geplant, das immer 7 oder mehr Jahre zwischen den VÖs
liegen, doch Schade war es schon. Die Kritiken haben es immer gut mit Paradox
gemeint und so wäre es doch einfach mal toll zu sehen, das die deutsche
Speedmetal-Legende endlich mal ein wenig vom Rahm abschöpfen könnte.
Denn auch „Riot Squad“ ist wieder über jeden Zweifel erhaben und befriedigt die
Bedürfnisse des Fans sofort. Schon mit den ersten Klängen ist man wieder wie
„bei guten alten“ Freunden. Der typisch, sägende und schneidene Gitarrensound,
welcher für diese Band schon immer stand ist da und es klickt. Dazu die Stimme,
auch wenn es sicherlich etliche bessere Sänger gibt, doch das gehört zu Paradox
seit Anfang an.
„Riot Squad“ setzt den Weg von „Electrify“ konsequent fort und die 10 Songs
gehen nach ein bis zwei Durchläufen von der Hörmuschel direkt in die Rübe. Dort
werden sie vom ständigen Bangen zwar gewaltig durchgeschüttelt, doch das macht
weder „Riptide“ noch „Hollow Peace“ etwas aus. Das ist wirklich stahlharter
Metal von guter Qualität.
Ein klein wenig kompakter ist „Riot Squad“ ausgefallen, sein Vorgänger brauchte
(trotz seiner Genialität) einige Durchläufe um zu zünden. Hier sind wir wieder
mehr bei den durchschlagenden Rhytmen und Läufen des Debüts angelangt.
Bei Paradox waren es schon immer die Riffs, welche die Stücke transportierten
und auch auf der mittlerweile 5ten Scheibe, hat sich die Band einiges aus dem
Ärmel geschraubt und türmt bei „Rise in Rank“ einiges auf. Wow, hier gibt es
wirklich nichts zu meckern.
Wie bekannt ist bin ich Fan dieser Band und ich bin mit „Riot Squad“ rundum
zufrieden. Auch wenn mir ein Nerd-Verhalten in letzten Jahren immer mehr fremd
wird, haben Paradox es mal wieder geschafft, das ich mich fühle wie zu meinen
Anfangszeiten, als ich noch mit zitterigen nach der nächsten Sensation suchte.
Der Sound liegt wieder zwischen Moderne und Old-school. Leider ist Charly
seinem Traum mal Produzent Andy Sneap zu arbeiten auch dieses Mal nicht näher
gekommen, doch der Klang von „Riot Squad“ bietet keinen Grund zu Klage. Achim
Köhler (ua. Wizard) hat hier erstklassige Arbeit geliefert. Warm und druckvoll,
vor allem Gitarren, Gitarren und noch Mals Gitarren. Auch wenn alle Welt
mittlerweile wieder Metallica abfeiert, bleibe ich dabei, das Paradox wieder
mal ihren alten Helden und Vorbildern davon geprescht sind.

Ja ist denn schon Weihnachten? ,werden sich manche
angesichts dieser geballten Ladung
Power, Speed Metal fragen. Im Gegensatz zu Labelkollegen wie Brainstorm oder Mob Rules, die sich ja beide dem
melodischeren Metal verschrieben haben, fahren Paradox mit einem gigantischen rifforientierten
Thrash Metal Brett auf, dass mit unvorstellbarer und brachialer Gewalt aus den
Boxen kracht. Das Markenzeichen der Band war schon immer wuchtiger, speedig,
breakunterlegter Hochgeschwindigkeitsthrashmetal, der zu einer kompakten Einheit
verschmolzen wurde. Dieses Trademark
führen sie auf dem neuen Album konsequent weiter, nur kommt das neue Material
sehr vielschichtiger und eingängiger rüber.
Schon beim Opener „Suburban Riot
Squad “ packen die Jungs den Hammer aus und lassen die Glocken klingen. Weiter
geht’s mit „Hollow Peace „ und dem sehr eingängigen „Riptide “ Der einzige Song der ein wenig
untypisch ist ,wäre „Nothingness “ der am Anfang an die Glanzdaten von
Annihilator ,während ihrer „Set the World
on Fire „Ära erinnert . Ein klasse Song der einfach zeigt, wie vielseitig Paradox derzeit zu Wege gehen
Ohne die älteren Ergüsse von Paradox schmälern zu wollen,
zählen „Riptide, No Place to survive “, Nothingness“ und Planet
Terror (Bei diesem Songs wird am Anfang, eine Sequenz vom World Trade Center Anschlag eingespielt) zu den besten Songs die
jemals aus der Feder der 4 Musiker kamen. Dem steht auch die fette Produktion
in nichts nach und so kann diese locker mit den Ansprüchen des durchdachten
Songmaterials mithalten. Psychofficial“
ist ein würdiger Abgang, denn der
mörderhafte Speed schenkt mit zunehmender Dauer ganz gehörig ein und lässt oft
keinen Platz zum Atmen- Wahnsinn.
Dies alleine ist schon Grund genug, um Paradox den schon
lange verdienten Respekt zu erweisen und somit auch das neue Album als kleines
Meisterwerk bezeichnen zu dürfen.
Ich würde mich sehr freuen wenn die Band jetzt unzählige
Newcomer nachhaltig beeinflussen würden, denn mit der neuen Scheibe stellen die
Würzburger klar, dass sie für die derzeitiger Scene unverzichtbar sind.

Fazit:
Ein absolutes Sahneteil für Power bis Thrashmetaler, die es
richtig speedig und Heavy lieben, denn Paradox demonstrieren auf „Riot
Squad“ eindrucksvoll, dass sie derzeit eine Macht im Metal Bereich sind.
Für die Konkurrenz heißt es aufpassen, denn Charly Steinhauer und seine starken Männer sind auf der Überholspur und
werden mit diesem Riffgewitter für ein wenig Unruhe bei der Konkurrenz sorgen.

This is one of my Top 10 bands – and they don’t disappoint me!!
I have been looking forward to this release for quite some time now. After
seeing the band doing great live on Headbangers Open Air this summer, after
last years last minute canceling, this album was very expected. Bandleader
Charly Steinhauer promised the fans a heavier and faster album than it’s
predecessor Electrify, and I guess we got it!
10 tracks that hammers away without losing the melody, and rhythmic really
with balls. Listen to a track like Rise In Rank, controlled and precise, bull
still rockin’ along, with an underlying faster pace – this is
thrash at it’s best!
The reason I call this PowerThrash is, that Paradox, together with some few
other bands like Brainstorm, has a special sound and energy to their approach
to the Thrash genre: pumped, controlled and energetic, generally keeping an
accurately “swinging rhythm” (considering it’s a thrashband),
but also paces forward at “full throttle ahead”.
Paradox has this special kind of energy, that calls out the need to play some
air-guitar – try turning it up at your stereo, and see if I’m
right or not – if you can resist the need to rock along, you’re
either deaf and numb (and I do mean numb) or too f****n’ old.

Paradox still belong in my personal Top10 of all times after this album –
consolidating their position – this is awesome!!!

Metal Crypt
Good Thrash Metal can be hard to come by these days. We either get dinosaurs
plodding out their latest "Thrash attempts" (Metallica, Slayer,
I'm looking at you), or we get bands stabbing chances at reclaiming the feel
of the Bay Area glory days. I guess the Germans have a knack to thrashing
though; look no further than acts such as Sodom or Destruction, both fantastic
acts of the German scene. Paradox follow suit and flat out smoke. Now this
is my first taste of Paradox (I know, I know these guys have a history of
acclaimed releases), and I have to admit I like what I'm hearing, these guys
boast some impressive riffs, both immersive melodic riffs and naughtily heavy.
Another plus is that their singer sounds something like James Hetfield would
have around 1984 – had he had balls. What I really like is that Paradox
sound both undeniably classic and relevant to the scene in the modern day.
Really this is damn cool and utterly compelling – Megadeth did a similar
thing with their latest release although that shouldn't be seen as a direct
comparison, mainly a similarity.
Like all good Thrash albums this pretty much thrashes its way to the finish
line, never tripping over any filler or abruptly out of place instrumentals
– these guys don't have time for any sissy ballads either. "Suburban
Riot Squad" starts as it means to go on, punishing you with a damn fine
thrashing. Spewing forth vicious riffs left right and centre "Hollow
Peace" opens up with a shit-hot intro, merely a simple thing yet incredibly
effective due to an insane guitar tone and excellent production courtesy of
vocalist and guitarist Charly Steinhauer. Mixing and mastering comes courtesy
of Jacob Hansen (Anubis Gate, produced various kick ass releases) so you know
you're in good hands on the sound-front. "Riptide" literally rips
you apart with one of the meanest riffs I've heard in a good while. Some of
my other choice picks from the album include the furious "No Place to
Survive", blink and you'll miss it. "Planet Terror" has a nice
almost progressive feel to it, some interesting guitar work going on here
too.
Overall a great release and something Thrash Metal fans should check out.
Ticking all the right boxes Riot Squad should be on every sensible metal heads
wish list; aggressive yet melodic at the same time, a sweet sound and some
great musicianship. Recommended.

2007 has been a very important year for PARADOX. The band released the album
„Electrify“ and this record impressively showed what a comeback
has to look like. Still months after release the album was discussed amongst
all the Thrash fans. Thereafter the band, that has not released that many
records in their career, but always delivered them in high quality, started
to work on new songs. Now, in 2009, they are finally back, bringing you another
groundbreaking Power Thrash monster, entitled “Riot Squad”. No
doubt about it, PARADOX surpass themselves again and deliver their ultimate
masterpiece. You can feel the energy in every song as if you were with them
while recording it. PARADOX proof with this record that thrash metal with
an oldschool feeling can exist today without denying the technical progression.
THAT is how power/thrash metal in 2009 has to sound!

Rock Realms:
Paradox, like their German counterparts Metalium, are a band I discovered
on 2001's A Tribute To ABBA (see the Rock Realms review here). Unlike Metalium,
Paradox have otherwise remained off the radar to me until now.
Paradox was formed in 1986 by Charly Steinhauer (vocals and guitar) and Axel
Blaha. The band was completed by Markus Spyth and Roland Stahl. 23 years on,
Charly is still there fronting the group. He's now joined by Kai Pasemann
(guitar), Olly Keller (bass) and Roland Jahoda (drums)
Riot Squad is only the band's 5th album and follows 2008's Electrify and 2000's
Collision Course. Both the albums prior to that came at the end of the 1980's.
The Paradox style is somewhere between power metal and thrash. The sound is
nigh on perfect - the weight and speed of the guitars, bass and drums against
the clear but potent vocals is staggering. This is as good as bands ever sound.
You could call it power thrash, but I'm going to call it Pyroclastic Metal
- obscenely fast, hot and stupidly potent. Whatever, it sounds bloody excellent!
The compositions don't quite stand up to the might of the sound. They are
good, don't get me wrong, but the ferocity of proceedings (not the intricacies
of the writing) carries the album on its shoulders. Opening track 'Suburban
Riot Squad' defines the vibe perfectly. It's quick, brutal and kind of like
a pleasant version of armageddon. Charly comes across like John Bush (on-off
Anthrax vocalist). His voice is supremely strong, controlled, and has a wonderful
tone. It then follows a similar theme throughout, only rarely pausing for
breath. In fact the more you go through the album the more it sounds like
a power metal version of John Bush era Anthrax...and that's really not a bad
thing.
As a pure-bred thrash fest Riot Squad is exceptional; as an emotional journey
it's a bit of a desert. It's one dimensional, but it's a bloody nice dimension.
I haven't heard many albums this year I'd rather whack in the car and play
at maximum volume. Whether that's enough to make this a great album or not
is debatable.

Das deutsche Thrash Metal Urgestein Paradox legt nach dem grosartigen "Electrify"
einen weiteren Geniestreich vor und zeigt wie technischer, melodischer und
moderner Thrash Metal anno 2009 zu klingen hat. Gnadenlos gut!

Nach der grandiosen Thrash Metal Granate "Electrify" lassen Charly
Steinhauer und seine fränkische Gefolgschaft keinerlei Zeit mehr verstreichen
und feuern mit "Riot Squad" ein weiteres Geschoss ab, das in seiner
Durchschlagskraft erbarmungslos ist. Von der ersten Sekunde an drückt
man kompromisslos aufs Gaspedal, schmettert eine erbarmungslose Rifforgie
vom Brett und lässt nicht nur die glorreichen Achtziger wieder aufleben,
sondern transferiert diese für den Thrash Metal einmalige Zeit, problemlos
in die Gegenwart. Der Sound ist brachial, die Riffs direkt und wirkungsvoll.
Einst galten Paradox als die deutschen Metallica und Tracks wie "Riptide"
untermauern auch heute noch, warum. Dennoch mischen Paradox gekonnt filigrane
Melodien in ihren Sound und sprengen ähnlich wie Annihilator damit die
Grenzen ihres Genres. Was Sänger und Gitarrist Charly jedoch seiner Klampfe
abverlangt ist fast schon nicht mehr menschlich und dem gebührt Respekt.
Der Mann lebt seine Musik, die ihm nach langer und schwerer Krankheit den
Mut und die Energie zum Leben zurückgegeben hat. Diese Energie und das
Adrenalin das in dem sympathischen Genie steckt, wird auf allen zehn Nummern
auf "Riot Squad" deutlich. So muss moderner Thrash Metal klingen!

Legacy
Sehr erfreulich, das dieses Urgestein des Deutschen Thrash-Metals immer noch
bzw. wieder am Start ist. PARADOX existieren seit 1986 und haben mit den Alben
„Product Of Imagination“ und „Heresy“ (wurden beide
von Metal Mind wieder veröffentlicht!) zwei absolute Genre-Klassiker
geschrieben. Line-up Wechsel, Label-Probleme sowie persönliche und gesundheitliche
Baustellen sorgten dafür, dass die Band danach gute zehn Jahre auf Eis
lag. Hartnäckige Fragen nach einer Reunion sowie der darauf folgende
Wacken Gig Ende der Neunziger, brachten den Stein wieder ins Rollen. Im Jahre
2000 konnte Charly Steinhauer, das einzige verbliebenes Gründungsmitglied,
mit „Collision Course“ ein phänomenales Combeback feiern.
PARADOX stehen seit jeher für sehr melodischen, aber rifflastigen Bay-Area
Thrash Metal. Nicht ohne Grund, wurde die Combo in den Achtzigern als die
Deutsche Antwort auf Metallica bezeichnet. Wer deren erste drei Alben oder
alte Death Angel liebt, wird seine helle Freude mit den Würzburgern haben!
Nach „Collision Course“ dauerte es erneut über sieben Jahre,
bis es mit „Electrify“ ein neues Lebenszeichen gab. Eine langjährige
Darmkrankheit, zwang Charly erneut zu dieser Pause. Auf dem letzten Album,
während dessen Fertigstellung erneute Personalwechsel notwendig waren,
zeigt sich Mr. Steinhauer von einer melodischeren, etwas progressiveren Seite
und schaffte mehr Raum für Midtempo und Groove. Wie bereits vorab angekündigt,
gibt es auf „Riot Squad“ nun wieder verstärkt und ohne Umwege
auf die Mütze! Der Opener ..Suburban Riot Squad.. untermauert dies gleich.
Ansonsten sind ..Riptide.., ..Rise In Rank.., ..Hollow Peace.. und ..Dream
Hero.. die geilsten von insgesamt zehn allesamt starken Songs. Mit ..No Place
To Survive.., einem neu eingespielten, bisher unveröffentlichten Demosong
von 1986, gibt’s als Bonus noch ein echtes Sahnehäubchen. Die Produktion
hat der Bandleader diesmal im Alleingang übernommen, sich bzgl. des Mix
aber von Achim Köhler Unterstützung geholt. „Riot Squad“
ist neben der neuen Artillery und Megadeth, die beste Thrash-Veröffentlichung
der letzten Monate! Das einzige, das Anlass zu ein klein wenig Kritik gibt,
ist die Produktion. Diese ist grundsolide und nah am Live-Sound, hätte
aber etwas druckvoller ausfallen können. Wäre interessant, wie das
ganze mit „bigger budget“ klingt. Ist natürlich auch alles
eine Folge der rückläufigen CD-Verkäufe und MP3-Download Seuche.
Also: Geht zum Plattendealer Eures Vertrauens und kauft Euch diesen Leckerbissen!
Hoffentlich besteht bald die Gelegenheit, die neuen Stücke Live zu hören.

Hui, das ging nun aber fix. Bereits ein Jahr legen PARADOX bereits den Nachfolger
zu ‚Electrify’ vor. Und diesmal hat Bandleader Charly Steinhauer
wirklich alle Register gezogen. ‚Riot Squad’ ist die Quintessenz
des PARADOXschen Schaffens. Nachdem ‚Electrify’ eher melodisch
ausgefallen war, gibt es hier nun den Old School Knüppel aus dem Sack.
Allen voran die Neueinspielung des alten Demo Krachers ‚No Place To
Survive’, ein absolutes Riff Inferno von dem die Horden junger Nachwuchsthrasher
nur träumen können. Die Platte hat wohl das schnellste Grundtempo
aller PARADOX Scheiben und ist brutal und eingängig zugleich. Einziges
kleines Manko ist der etwas leicht künstliche Sound, speziell die Gitarren
hätte etwas mehr Schmackes vertragen, aber das ist nur marginal. Jeder
qualitätsbewusste Thrasher sollte sich diese Scheibe kaufen und damit
eine der besten deutschen Bands unterstützten, damit PARADOX auch mal
im eigenen Land die Anerkennung bekommen, die ihnen im Ausland längst
zu teil wird.

Wer die Band um Frontmann Charly Steinhauer in diesem Sommer live gesehen
hat, wird bestätigen, dass die deutschen Thrasher nach ihrem zweiten
Comeback ELECTRIFY (2008) in der Form ihres Lebens sind. Glücklicherweise
konnten die sympathischen Hessen ihre Leistung ins Studio retten und bretzeln
uns dementsprechend ein sattes Pfund vor die Mappe. Stilistisch hat sich erwartungsgemäß
nicht viel getan, immer noch herrscht die Thrash-Keule, die in schöner
Regelmäßigkeit von melodischen Einsprengseln aufgelockert wird.
Charlys dezent heiserer Gesang hat sich ebenfalls nicht verändert –
was auch verdammt gut so ist, schließlich gehört seine Stimme zu
den wichtigsten Markenzeichen von Paradox. Speed-Bretter wie ‘Hollow
Peace’, ‘Evolution Reset’ (rasend schnell, aber ein genialer
Refrain), das gnadenlos auf Old School gebürstete ‘No Place To
Survive’ oder der brutale Rausschmeißer ‘Psychofficial’
lassen sich deshalb ohne Übertreibung zum Besten zählen, was die
Thrash-Szene in den letzten Monaten hervorgebracht hat. (...) für Moshpit-Freaks
unverzichtbar!

Die nach wie vor geilsten deutschen melodic-Speed/ Thrasher PARADOX wurden
leider nach rasantem Start Mitte der 80er, als man schon als deutsche Antwort
auf METALLICA gehandelt wurde, immer wieder von Tiefschlägen in Bandleader
Charly Steinhauers Leben aus der Bahn geworfen. Daran scheiterte auch das
erste Comeback im Jahre 2000, trotz absoluten Killeralbums ("Collision
Course"). Doch er hat nie aufgesteckt und ballerte im letzten Jahr mit
"Electrify" das vierte Knallerwerk der Bandgeschichte raus, dem
man nun mit "Riot Squad" einen ebenso starken Nachfolger zur Seite
stellt.
Und auch hier regiert von Beginn an wieder melodischer, speediger Thrash
Metal der Extraklasse mit Killerriffing und absolut null modernen Einflüssen.
Der eröffnende Titeltrack, der folgende Ohrwurmknaller "Hollow Peace"
oder das Riffmonster "Riptide" zeigen, wer nach wie vor der Meister
in diesem Revier ist! Die Soli sind schwindelerregend und nur geilomat. Bangalarm
ist bei dem groovenden "Rise in Rank" angesagt, das nach dem melodischen
Intropart alles thrasht, was geht. Völliger Killer! Noch rasanter knüppelt
man in "Evolution Reset", das ist schon DEW-SCENTED-Liga, nur melodischer.
Ein Knaller jagt den Nächsten. Das sich langsam aufbauende und etwas
langsamere "Nothingness" macht da ebenso keine Ausnahme wie die
totale Raserei "No Place to Survive", welcher wohl der härteste
und schnellste Track seit den Debuttagen anno 1987 ist! Beim Shred-Riffing
haben die Herren ordentlich einen draufgelegt, man lausche dem harschen Beginn
von "Dream Hero", welches jeden "Master of Puppets"-Fan
in den Wahnsinn treiben wird. Wie überhaupt die ganze Scheibe alten METALLICA-Fans
blind reinlaufen sollte. Das recht lange "Planet Terror" lässt..s
etwas unthrashiger angehen, fällt aber keinen Deut ab zu den anderen
Tracks. Dafür lassen es PARADOX im recht stumpfen Schlußsong "Psychofficial"
nochmal mächtig schnell krachen.
10 absolute Juwelen Riffbetonten melodic-Thrash Metals haben die Jungs auf
"Riot Squad" verewigt und wer mitreden will, der muß die Scheibe
(wie die vorherigen vier auch!) haben!

We had to wait 8 long years to receive Electrify from the awesome German thrashers
Paradox, but they have shown us mercy, and delivered their 5th album Riot
Squad one year later. It basically picks up where its predecessor left off,
with 10 new tracks of the band's energetic, 'electrified' progressive thrash
metal that will have you banging your head and shouting YESSSSS to the heavens.
The aging Germans have not lost their touch, and though the album is not precisely
as memorable as Electrify, it's goddamned close (I'll score it the same),
and heavier, another positive charge to their discography.
Prepare your neck for immediate stimulation as "Suburban Riot Squad"
comes into focus with the band's gleaming, unique melodies and then a punchy
thrasher which should have any non-poseur reaching for his kevlar, helmet,
taser and billy club. "Hollow Peace" offers no respite, it's like
having a few brief seconds in between hammerblows to your jaw, with anthemic
melodies intertwined in its chugging bottom end. Kind of a modern Flotsam
& Jetsam feel to it. "Riptide" rocks out even harder than the
previous tracks, with an unforgettable acrobatic thrash rhythm conjuring all
the better spinal tapping thrash metal of the 80s. "Rise in Rank"
opens in a wall of crazy melody before it once again dives into 100% urban
combat. Close your eyes and dream of a dystopian future in which you find
yourself the last line of defense between the tax paying privileged and the
anarcho streetpunks armed with their latest cybertech warfare.
If Robocop were a thrash metal album, this might just be it!
"Evolution Rest" creates instant anxiety with its spikes of neurotic
melody and grooving violence. "Nothingness" is pensive and laid
back, but there is a tension behind it which seems to warn of the oncoming
onslaught of "No Place to Survive", which just kicked my ass clear
across the cityscape. "Dream Hero" and "Planet Terror"
offer two more warnings of the twisted society to come, and "Psychofficial"
closes out the album with unnverving, battering brutality, one of the heaviest
tracks this band has ever delivered.
Riot Squad sounds suitably confrontational and acidic. Charly Steinhauer's
vocals remain just as memorable as the first time you ever spun Product of
Imagination or Heresy, and the band are at their technical prime, though never
indulgent beyond the framework of their tight, punctual riffing. This is real
mother fucking thrash metal, which looks backward only to smile and nod at
its rich past, then turns about face and marches into the future, where it
can still kick ass. Paradox exclaims boldly to all the would-be, retrograde
nostalgic upstarts: thrash metal is not a relic, it is not over, it has only
begun.

PARADOX is definitely one of my favourite Thrash Metal bands and they made me so happy when they released "Electrify" last year. They’ve been silent for many years and it was a really great album. Now after one year they release "Riot Squad" to show their presence once again.
I don’t think that there’s much to say about
them...They’ve played an important role in Thrash Metal history. So if
you don’t know them just keep in mind that they were formed in 1986 and
they’re one of the best Thrash Metal bands. Since then, they have
released 5 studio albums (including "Riot Squad").
About this album: I can say that I didn’t expect
it would be so good. Now I should pick a few songs to write about, but
the only thing I can say is that from the beginning to the end it’s a
kick-ass album. Classic PARADOX’s riffs, great thrashy sound
and this unique voice...What makes me feel so excited is that they show
that Thrash Metal is not dead (as many people usually say). It’s here,
it’s alive... And PARADOX is one of the best bands to prove it. "Riot Squad" has a very good production as well as a great cover and, as already said, it’s musically excellent.
If you’re one of their fans I’m pretty sure you’ll like it. If you don’t even know them you should listen first to "Product Of Imagination" and "Heresy" just to see what this band is about and then check their other albums.

Nach
diversen Rückschlägen haben die deutschen Thrasher von PARADOX vor einem Jahr
mit “Electrify“ ein beachtliches Comeback hingelegt. Die Frage, ob das Line-Up dieses Mal
stabil bleiben und es ein weiteres Album der Deutschen geben würde, haben
PARADOX mit vorliegendem “Riot Squad“ standesgemäß beantwortet. Standesgemäß,
weil sie ihrem Stil absolut treu geblieben sind und auch anno 2009 dem
Thrash-Metal frönen.
Die schon in den Achtzigern vorhandenen Einflüsse von METALLICA sind nach wie
vor im Sound der Band zu finden. Dabei haben Charly Steinhauer und seine Meute
aber bereits bei dem Vorgänger darauf geachtet, dass diese nicht allzu weit im
Vordergrund stehen, wie beispielsweise noch auf “Collision Course“. Diesen Weg
gehen sie auf “Riot Squad“ weiter. Gitarrentechnisch kann man die Amis zwar
noch hier und da heraushören, PARADOX legen das Hauptaugenmerk bei ihren Songs
aber auf eine gelungene Mischung aus Melodie und Härte, die am besten bei dem
genialen “Hollow Peace“ zur Geltung kommt. Das nicht minder starke “Rise In
Rank“ oder harte Thrasher wie das im ICE-Tempo auf einen niederprasselnde “No
Place To Survive“, “Evolution Reset“ und “Psychofficial“ decken das ganze
Songwriting-Spektrum ab, das man von PARADOX gewohnt ist.
Will sagen, es gibt reihenweise Riffs mit Champions-League-Niveau und ebenso
viele messerscharfe wie melodische Soli auf “Riot Squad“ zu hören. Dabei achten
PARADOX aber darauf, sich nicht innerhalb der Songs zu verzetteln. Die Songs
gehen gut ins Ohr und kommen zumeist immer gut auf den Punkt. Die Songs auf
“Riot Squad“ haben ihre Wurzeln klar in den 80ern, klingen dabei aber zu keiner
Sekunde altbacken. Im Gegenteil, Nummern wie “Planet Terror“ bringen die
80er-Thrash-Elemente in Einklang mit dezent modernen Nuancen im Sound von
PARADOX und klingen daher frisch. Einzig der Opener und quasi Titeltrack
“Suburban Riot Squad“ kann in dieser Hinsicht nicht überzeugen. Die Nummer geht
zwar thrashtechnisch auch voll aufs Ganze, kann mit den anderen Tracks aber
qualitativ nicht mithalten. Es ist im Allgemeinen aber die Vielschichtigkeit
von “Riot Squad“, die das Album so interessant macht. Es treffen in den Songs immer
wieder groovige Mid-Tempo-Parts auf pfeilschnelle Thrash-Riffs und harmonieren
hervorragend zusammen. Hier haben PARADOX beim Songwriting echt eine Nase für
die richtigen Riffs und Breaks an der richtigen Stelle im jeweiligen Song
bewiesen.
Die Deutschen bieten auf ihrem fünften Album also erstklassigen Thrash-Metal,
der seine Wurzeln nicht verleugnet und trotzdem frisch klingt. Charly
Steinhauer und seinen Jungs kann man eigentlich nur wünschen, dass PARADOX
jetzt (endlich) ein stabiles Line-Up haben. In der bestechenden Form, in der
die Jungs sich momentan befinden, wäre es schade, wenn die Band erneut
auseinander brechen würde. PARADOX haben mit “Riot Squad“ eure Aufmerksamkeit
verdient.

Thoughts Of Metal
The German
Power/Thrash/Speed Metal formation PARADOX is one of the veterans of the 1980's.
Despite a break of about 10 years, this block of Metal is hard to break and
came back with a strong album ("Collision Course") in 2000,
but fate struck again and the band was halted once more as mainman Charly
Steinhauer was faced with personal problems. But the gods of Metal were on his
side and anno 2005 PARADOX picked up their arms again to fight the unfinished
battle. Their fourth album, "Electrify", came out last year
and proved to be quite a powerful piece of Power/Thrash. Charly and co. had far
from lost the ability and determination to offer solid Metal. And so they could
carry on playing gigs at various festivals, do a tour and more and even start
working on a new album. Charly once again produced the album, but it's unclear
to me who did the mixing/mastering. Last time it was Jacob Hansen. This time I
saw two names being connected with this taks: Fredrik Nordström (news post in
October 2008 on the band's website) and Achim Köhler (news post in July 2009).
Whoever did it, he did a great job. The artwork was once again done by Claudio
Bergamin, who also did it for the "Electrify" album. And if
you look closely you can see the same character featured on the cover. Come to
think of it, it looks like a badge and if the band is looking for an original
merchandise idea: have such badges made, not as patches, but as pins/broches.
PARADOX's fifth album is called "Riot Squad" and will be
available on the 16th of October. With a title like that, you can easily expect
a more aggressive PARADOX, one that found the right inspiration, strength and
power to take the music to the next level, especially after "Electrify".
And let me tell you, this is one big Thrash assault. It starts with "Suburban
Riot Squad". Main ingredients: raging guitars, fast riffing, uptempo
drums. All of excellent quality. You just can't sit still here. Power and
ferocity in one. Add a wild solo and the process is completed. "Hollow
Peace" comes bursting in directly with its sharp, aggressive
guitarwork and pounding drums. Out of the way or be killed by this machinegun
of a song. Charly did see to it that a touch of melodicness made it into the
chorus, mainly through his singing. But for the solo the usual procedure was
applied: fast Thrash. Outstanding material, no question about it.
And so we go on with "Riptide", an even more powerful song,
despite more normal drumming (not the humpapa-Thrash beat). The guitars sound
sharp and ready to bite. The music is catchy and a simple, yet effective,
chorus is then a helpful element. "Rise In Rank" has heavy
guitarwork - I don't expect PARADOX to tone it down here - and slow/midtempo
drumming. But when the real kickoff begins, you realize the preceding stuff was
just a first part. Once the Thrash kicks in, you're in for very pleasant
listening experience. Destructive guitarwork, drums pushing everything onwards,
making sure nothing stays upright. The rise to the top is a violent and
aggressive one. Things slow down a bit in the chorus, but once the solo claims
attention, it's back to pedal to the metal. Great in all aspects: rhythm,
melodicness, compositions, musicianship, sound, aggression, catchiness. "Evolution
Reset" is business as usual: Fast Thrash. And words like ferocious,
devastating, killer are more than fitting. And the chorus is still the keeper
of melodic touches.
The second part of the tracklisting (the first track being "Nothingness")
starts calm with animal sounds. My guess is it's ocean waves and dolphin or
whale sounds. My ears could fool me, though. The Metal comes in in a brutal manner,
sounding quite dark. Somehow there's more moderation compared to the previous
tracks. The melodic touches are again reserved for the chorus. A less ferocious
song this time. And that's a good choice, else it would make the album sound
monotonous if all tracks were fast-speed Power/Thrash. And speaking of which, "No
Place to Survive" will kick you wide awake. Fast, relentless,
aggressive, one violent force of hack 'n' slash. Or in short, another
magnificent song. "Dream Hero" starts with a tension creating
composition. The overall feeling is evil, dark, monstrous and quite powerful.
The drumming is more normal, like in "Riptide", but with the
required ferocity. There's a Thrash boost in the bridge, but all falls backin
the slow, melodic chorus. Another very nice song, though, even if it's not full
speed all the way. Even if it were like that, it wouldn't mean you get a better
song, or better music.
But anyway, the track that follows is the least good one on "Riot
Squad": "Planet Terror". This is not a fast song,
it's not as Thrashy as the others, despite a title that might indicate such a
musical direction. Technicalities aren't important here, the flow and the unity
is. It begins with samples from the news, also hearing police and such before
the music bursts in and builds towards something violent. It's a midtempo
track, but with strange leads. I can't really put my finger on it (whether it's
guitars or keyboards, it's a looped sound that lingers in the back), but these
elements do make the song stand apart from the others. Of course melody plays a
role and Charly sings less rough, and cleaner. Personally I found it hard to
stay focused here. It sounds un-PARADOX-like. Maybe Charly wanted to try
something else and this dark track was the result. Perhaps with the texts at
hand, it might be easier to understand why the song sounds like it sounds.
Definitely not easy-listening. Give it a couple of spins to fully "get"
it. But then there's "Psychofficial" that closes the album in
style. PARADOX turns off the light with a blast. "Psychofficial"
is a superfast song, nothing more, nothing less. And no, it's not like
SLIPKNOT's "Psychosocial", even if Charly sings (in his own
rough way) the word in almost the same way.
PARADOX made a nice (second) comeback last year with "Electrify".
A powerful, yet modern sound was given to the songs by Jacob Hansen, who did a
good job back then. This time the sound is a bit different, rougher, less
polished, one might say. That's for the benefit of the more aggressive
guitarsound. "Riot Squad", the new album, is basically one
big, violent storm of aggressive Metal. Charly and co. have gained enough
inspiration while promoting the previous album and with this new release you
could say it's their best to date. Everything sounds masterful: production, musicianship,
compositions, sound, ... Therefore I'll end with the cliché phrase:
recommended for any fan of Speed Metal (or Power/Thrash, if you prefer that
term).

Desde Alemania nos llega el nuevo trabajo de una banda de Thrash metal,
Paradox. Formados en 1986 y con cuatro trabajos en el mercado hoy abrimos lo
que es oficialmente su quinta entrega en el panorama extremo.
Paradox es una banda que practica un thrash de la
vieja escuela, riffs rápidos y una voz que nos recuerda a los mejores
Metallica. Atrás quedaron las voces agudas propias del estilo. Un trabajo
compuesto por diez temas y con una duración de algo más de cuarenta y ocho
minutos de puro thrash.
En este disco nos muestran sus grandes dotes musicales, muy buenos riffs, solos
de guitarra y una composición muy cuidada. Todo ello acompañado por una rítmica
más que correcta.
Pese a no tener mucha información sobre los productores del álbum, hay que
decir que quien lo ha hecho no cabe duda de que ha realizado un muy buen
trabajo, ya que los temas suenan muy muy bien, y se distingue cada uno de los
instrumentos a la perfección, cosa que ho y en dia es difícil de encontrar.
Riot squad lo abre “Suburban riot squad” un tema muy bueno para abrir este
trabajo, rapidez en su ejecución, y unos solos de guitarra muy bien ejecutados
y pensado ya que a diferencia de otros grupos los punteos suelen meterse sin
ton ni son, simplemente por mostrar que saben hacerlos, aunque dejen mucho que
desear en ocasiones.
“Hollow peace”, “Riptide”, “Rise in rank” siguen la misma línea trazada desde
que hemos dado al play, thrash metal del bueno y con mucho gusto, creando
melodías a dos guitarras realmente buenas.
Seguimos desgranando este trabajo y escuchamos su
quinto tema, “Evolution rise” un tema que es mas de lo mismo, pero volviendo a
reiterarme en lo anteriormente mencionado. “Nothingness” es su sexto tema y
para el mejor del álbum, es un tema no tan rápido como sus predecesores, pero
con una rítmica muy buena y unas voces más trabajadas, y con un estribillo más
propio de las nuevas tendencias musicales.
Después de este paréntesis de thrash volvemos a empezar, ejecuciones rápidas, y
otras a medio tiempo que te hacen mover la cabeza ya que te llegan muy rápido,
“No place to survive”. “Dream hero” es un tema que nos vuelve a recordar a los
mejores Metallica, de álbum como “Ride the lightning” o “Master of puppets”,
destacar que desde ahora parece que el tema vocal a ganado a la hora entrar en
coros. Y En este tema podréis encontrar el mejor solo del
álbum a dos guitarras, espectacular.
“Planet terror” su noveno tema, sigue la misma
tónica que al principio, aunque parecen haber bajado la velocidad en su
ejecución aunque sigue siendo una bomba de relojería, en este tema quiero
destacar la introducción de synthes pero únicamente como arreglo, para nada
toman importancia, ya que es prácticamente insignificante su presencia en el
tema.
Y como no podría ser de otra forma cerramos con un tema ultra rápido, “Psychofficial”.
Nuevamente y por si tenia alguna dudad dejan claro el control absoluto de los
instrumentos por parte de cada miembro.
Sin duda estamos hasta el momento ante uno de los mejores trabajos de la
escuela de thrash, bajo mi parecer, ya que su anterior trabajo no me acabo de
llegar, lo contrario a este. Si algo quiero destacar son las voces, que hace un
buen trabajo pero no me gusta como están ecualizadas, da la impresión de que en
todo momento estas escuchando el álbum en una tubería. Por lo demás lo dicho,
un álbum totalmente recomendado.
